Guest soul_hull
i went on my first scooter rally in 1986. morecambe. i attended them until well into the 90s. i got very very fed up with the music policy on them - ESPECIALLY the soul that got played, which was billy butler right track and frank wilson and black power and nf porter etc etc over and over and over and over and over and bloody over. i got to know both the regular djs at the time very well, and had several long discussions with both of them...and essentially - they are paid to fill the floor, not to be 'credible'. the music at these events actually put me off in the end and i stopped going - same old same old time after time. i also had a bad scooter crash in the mid 90s which put paid to my scootering activities as well. in short - wehat i'm saying is...the music, when i used to go, was bloody dreadful - the people were great, i love scooters and the scene, but the music both sucked and blowed. problem is - scooterists are not all the same musically, many are not into music much 0 -just scooters, others like reggae/ska, punk/oi, or whatever, and it always sounded like they would play the poppy stuff that E VERYBODY knew rather than anything decent. i once begged the dj to play an 80s soul track im loved at the time - he said ' no one will dance so i'm not playing it'. i said 'i'll dance' - so he played it, and i was the only guy on the dancefloor. so they have a tough job too the djs - they HAVE to play to the crowd, coz an empty dancefloor means they won't get booked for the next gig. it also meant, usually, that the music was never very good - ie 'scooterist shyte' !!! hope that's cast a little light on things... Guest Bearsy
Obviously the said dj is as ignorent about scootering as some scooterists are about northern soul. If you aint a scooterist dont knock it and if you aint a soulie dont knock that either, as for scooter rallies nowadays can i please let you know that the dj`s dont always play the same tunes you think they do all the time but they do indeed play most of the more popular ( overplayed to soulies ) oldies, but the scooter rally dj`s are in my opinion of a much higher standard than some may think. ok they may not be household names but they certainly have some quality in the boxes which they do play and do get a good reaction on the dance floor, I am a scootersist that is very active and also a lover of Northern soul deep and wide so please dont tarr all of us with the same brush. if i ever catch anyone tarnishing me i will get that brush and stick it right up the accusers arse now ive got that of my chest im going to get myself a nice cuppa tea Bearsy Link to comment Social source share

At my nearest large soul night Frank Wilson, Ruby Andrews, Nolan Porter, Carla Thomas etc... (you get the general idea?)... have to be played or the locals believe a live sacrifice to the northern gods must be made instead! However, I have played to the scooter club in the same city and found they'll happily accept underplayed soul from any era, funk, R&B, ska etc. Much more interesting. They are very keen on The Kinks though Link to comment Social source share

Paul. I like to do things arseways, and got into Scooters through Northern Soul. I did feel tho that the regulars at many nights and niters I went to looked down their nose at mods/scooterists. I was going to dayers and the odd niter at Yate. Met some of the Torbay/Torquay lot who would come up on customised scoots*, and fell in love with them. The Scoots that is The thing is, it is human nature to lump whole sections of society together. Many guys assumed I was a Billy Butler Out On The Floor type, who knew nothing about Northern Soul (Well at least they got that right I guess). The difference is for Northern Soul fans, the music is the most important piece to their social jigsaw. For Scooterists, the Scooter is the focal point (Although I know many lads who never owned a Scoot who probably havent missed a Rally in 20 years). Just like for mods its the style that is the most important thing. Its just a question of degrees. Does anybody think Andy BB is any less dedicated a soul fan because he wears ill fitting suits and has a moody haircut? Paul. I dont suppose the guy you were chatting to was Vince Ayers from Bristol was it? I know he used to dj at scooter rallys. That guy must have had 2 or 3 hundred thousand records pass through his collection over the years. And some total obscurities too. And he used to moan like a cheap hooker about trying to play any of them at rallys. Top bloke. one of the best IMO. *BTW did anyone see Russ Mitchell on some Motorbike customise show oin Sky 251 tonight? I was flicking thru the channels and thought, hello I know that fella. I remember him as a young mod on his Vespa 50 with F.O.S (Frampton-on-Severn) on the flyscreen. Now he had a few lovely scooters. I love Soul music and i attend Soul events with my Soul buddys (A couple ride Scooters) Everybody knows that you dont normally hear massive, obscure or rare tunes in the main rooms on a scooter rally! I mean when was the last time Butch or Roger Banks played on a national scooter event? I dont attend a nighter and complain about the lack of scooters! You will never see a more varied group of people as you would on a national scooter rally, and they are all in attendance usually just to get pissed and have a larf. I might add though, the quality of Soul tunes has really improved over the years with the addition of Soul rooms. Great oldies get a spin these days, you will always hear Wade Flemmons - Jennette, Doug Banks, Roy Hamilton, etc etc etc. As far as the guy calling a tune Scooterists shite, it seems to me that the guy has completley missed the point and has little or no understanding of the Scooter scene and the diversity of the people involved in it! FrankM
I played a scooter rally and was sorting out the box when I was approached by a woman possible in her thirties and definitely a bleached blonde. (this is just "colour" and has no real relevance to the story) Her opener was "i hope you're going to beplaying some good stuff" Me "Oh it's all good stuff in here" "Nane o that sixties soul shite then?" was her to the point response. As it turned out it was a very good night. My fellow DJ played some great R&B and the promoter played everything else the crowd wanted to hear including "Heartbreak Avenue" the two tone stuff, the Jam etc. He explained that was his job not mine to play the "classics". Anyway your mate should have asked for Chris Clark's version as it only received its official vinyl release last year Link to comment Social source share

Guest
 Is that what the other dj`s say when they have to follow you or have you bought an original now Mischief no sarcastic remarks are needed in reply to this post. Bearsy Just hold on everyone! If you don't like the music they play on scooter rallies then why go? Shouldn't you go to the Scooter Rallies for the love of scooters, the people and their wide range of tastes in both music and styles? So, therefore, if you are a scooterist and you don't like NS then you don't go to NS dos! Or in the case of rallies you don't go to the NS rooms! I've been a scooterist and a lover of NS for 25 years and for me if it wasn't for the 'shite' they supposedly play on the rallies then I wouldn't love NS. The rally scene introduced me to NS and there the lover affair started and has never stopped. Do you all realise what snobs you sound like. On one of the other forums Amy Winehouse and Frank Popp are being dissed because they are new records! Nobody stops to think about the fact that they are popular because they are good sounding records. I'm gonna stop else I'll be going on about the immigrationa laws and everything next which is totally inappropriate. Slider Link to comment Social source share
