Guest espo Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Brilliant record ---been playing this for years --then lent it to Robbo ---who lost it
Guest Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Nice one Jo, great to see the video ! Its a fabulous record, featured it in 'manifesto' a while back, one of those that sits in my frequently played section, but somehow passed me by at the time of it's release...wasn't it a chart hit..?....it's one of those I remember exactly the first time I heard it.....New Years Day, The Blue Elephant, Fulham, 12.15 a.m. with Ian Levine...both of us knew the song but neither had heard this version before. We couldn't hear it clearly (its a huge restaraunt) and looked at each other, mouths open, because we could hear the Diva vocals, strings, chords, the stomping beat...the very epitome of Northern Soul meets Disco meets House, a perfect combination of all three and proof positive that 'Northern Soul' is a constantly moving concept rather than a definate. I wish there were more like it. I'm no Paul Weller fan (couldn't care less) but it's a great song.

Simon, I got this at time of release as a promo circa 96/7 when I was doing Baby Janes and it was perfect for that club - like you say, Northern meets Disco. Fire Island did an excellent mix on this - check out the other Fire Island stuff...'There but for the Grace of God'....OMG, what an anthem There were some other brilliant soulful uplifting house tracks by Jocelyn Brown and Martha Wash released round about the same time with the same 'feel' to them - you'll have to pop round for a Diva & Cake Session Jo

My copy of 'Shout to The Top' is the Fire Island promo 12 " too. I remember the redo of 'There But For the Grace of God' because I was managing a sports shop in Covent Garden at the time and was making CDRs of stuff up so everyone got a listen to a mixture of these kind of current things, Disco and Northern Soul ...worked very well. Still prefer the Machine version but there you go...it has particular memories of a particular time. I was buying a lot of stuff, often on CD single, in the late 80's thru to the mid 90's that still sounds great to me...Crown Heights Affair 'I'll Do Anything' (gave the 12" away .....grrr.....) Yolanda Adams 'Children Of The World', Jeanie Tracy 'It's My Time' , 'Do You Believe In The Wonder' and 'If This Is Love' , Martha Wash 'Runaround' and 'Carry On', Dr Lovequake 'Love On Love', Dina Carroll 'Ain't No Man' and 'Special Kind Of Love' , Dan Hartman and Loleatta Holloway 'Keep The Fire Burning' , Rochelle Fleming 'Danger' , Eve Gallagher 'Love Come Down' and 'Change You Mind ', Shawn Christopher 'Make My Love' (I had an album with a great track too and now I can't find it) , Sheer Bronze 'Walking On', Dani'elle Gaha 'Secret Love', Lisa Stanfield 'Little Bit Of Heaven' , Beverly Knight 'Greatest Day', Ultra Nate 'New Kind Of Medicine' and my absolute favourite, the flowing bouncy and wonderful Sabrina Johnson 'Satisfy My Love'..the list goes on and I know you have more, you record whore you. How did I miss Baby Janes (but cha DID Blanche ya DID..)...I guess I was just a West End boy...SOUTH of the river? There is a SOUTH of the river ?? I feel an uptempo bouncy uplifting house and disco morning coming on....that'll get the hoovering done ! Edited October 21, 2006 by Simon White
sister dawn Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 That was Scary... first I thought she was gonna fall down then steps , Then she tried stopping that big lorry... . Then was in the middle of the road trying to get the cars to hit her Poor Loleatta... she must have been suicidal.. I think she may have preferred the backing from the style council as opposed to that dodgy backbeat that was in there.... Thanks for posting though Jo but not my cup of teaa x
Mike Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 thought check as know in past similar services often changes stuff liek this but below still works [tube]lYoRCXmzVfg[/tube]
Guest Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Just posted an mp.3 of Sabrina Johnson up but somehow managed to put it in the Videos section...silly arse.
Sebastian Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 The Style Council version is in my opinion in an entirely different league and far, far superior. And I'm no big Paul Weller fan.
Guest marco i Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Talking about Style Council and house tunes, does anybody else like their version of Promised Land? Marco PS: Jo, guess who gave that Loleatta link to Diego in the beginning... See you on Saturday in Italy!

Guest marco i Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Can't wait until Saturday....off to check the weather forecast now. See you in Turin Jo Turin in late October is not exactly what English people think about when you say "Italian weather"...
