Cheltsoulnights Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Its always been a strange label to collect there is a theory that many of the Styrene copies are re-issues from when Simon sousan bought the rights to the label also you can get many of them on vinyl I collect these and they are very difficult to find Maybe someone on here can enlighten me on this subject
arnie j Posted October 18, 2006 Author Posted October 18, 2006 thanks for the info guys, let the hunt begin

Sebastian Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Maybe someone on here can enlighten me on this subject The EXTENSIVE liner notes to the two volume "Mirwood Story" CDs on Kent/ACE goes a long way trying to sort out this mess. Really informative liner notes and worth the price alone.
Mark Bicknell Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Wow, i have a Sheppards demo paid £8.00 i think for it off an early Tim Brown list very early 90's, has to be the hardest Mirwood 45 to locate either stock/issue or demo?, fantastic grass roots of the scene label, timeless!!! Both will be around the same value I guess, but I don't know If one is rarer than the other.
45cellar Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 (edited) thanks for the info guys, let the hunt begin Hi Among my favourites on Mirwood is The Mirettes, which came out twice. - I've got Mirwood 5514 - The Mirettes - He's Alright With Me - You're Kind Ain't No Good. A brilliant Double Sider and .... Mirwood 5531 - The Mirettes - Now That I Found You Baby - He's Alright With Me A brilliant Double Sider Amazingly neither are amongst the most expensive Mirwoods Throughout almost the whole Label A or B Side, the Quality is astounding. Jerry Hipkiss Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 Interesting...just wondered if that was pressed somewhere other than the West Coast, for national release? Ain't it strange how one of the longest-known NS labels can still fascinate us anoraks?

Ain't it strange how one of the longest-known NS labels can still fascinate us anoraks? Hi I have always loved this Label, even though some are cheap - some are expensive - some are easy to find - others impossible. You're right .. Still fascinates me - yes I'm an anorak too - As they were cheap <-- (My Excuse - Told you "I'm an anorak") - I've got 4 different Label Variations for "Baby, Do The Philly Dog" & 2 Different Demo's (Not so Cheap) - A collectors Dream/Nightmare as to which was pressed first? but shows how many pressing plants were used and how many were made. As mentioned the Purple & The Blue issue are Monarch Delta # 59032 This dates it to September/October 1965, Monarch Delta #s are considered to be accurate when finding the date of press. I've checked some of my other copies that are Styrene Monarch 5504 Delta # 60006 - Dec 1965/Jan 1966 - The Olympics - We Go Together 5505 Delta # 60224 - Jan 1966/Feb 1966 - The Belles - Don't Pretend 5511 Delta # 60709 - Feb 1966/Mar 1966 - Bobby Garrett - My Little Girl 5515 Delta # 59255 - Oct 1965/Nov 1965 - Earl Cosby - Ooh Honey Baby 5523 Delta # 62703 - Jul 1966/ Aug 1966 - The Olympics - Baby, Do The Philly Dog To me these Delta #'s are the ones I would have expected for each record, so I can't see anything wrong with them. Also I can't Imagine Simon Sousan had any interest in re-pressing "The Duck"? I would say that the Styrene copies are 100% Original but from a different pressing plant - (Monarch) Anyone any thoughts on this. Edited October 21, 2006 by 45cellar

pikeys dog Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Roger, is there a pressing plant mark for that one on the far left (the plain block print)? Label layout on the white one looks like the one used for Kent promos - maybe a west coast pressing using a local plant?

Hi I saw the Black Label recently listed as first issue for the Duck, but It had no scan of the record. I think it was "Records By Mail" but not quite sure. Someone bought It before I could get around to ordering It. I've seen a couple of Black Labels for Mirwood on the later numbers. The Purple Label I have for "The Duck" is on Styrene & I also on have a Purple Label Vinyl copy. I have seen a Label scan for "I Can't Get Away" which had a Purple Label. Does anyone know the order that the Coloured Labels were issued? Is your Black Label the same design as most of the Mirwoods or like the White DEMO? Edited October 25, 2006 by 45cellar

Pete S Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 About 4 years back I had a stunning vinyl white demo of That beatin Rhythm, Dave Flynn eventually nagged me so much to sell it that I sold it him for £80, never seen one since...what do we reckon, £250?
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Roger, is there a pressing plant mark for that one on the far left (the plain block print)? Hi Hippo, My Ace colleague Peter Gibbon and I think that the left hand pressing is probably from Allied, where many Kent-Modern 45s of similar vintage were also pressed I have Mirwood 101 (The Gas Co., probably of no interest to anyone on here who doesn't collect the label) and that's of similar design on both issue and demo. BTW which of the two Sheppards 45s are you calling "The Other One"? If it's the bottom one, I bought (and still own) one of that design from Soul Bowl in the early 80s for about three quid. Neither are boots. I think that my one is an RCA pressing, even though it doesn't have one of their unique *4KM- numbers. I have GWP and Laurie/Spectrum pressings that were pressed by RCA that look very similar... TONE

Some have A & B some have A & A - There doesn't appear to be any pattern to why some are and why some are not. Another thing is that some are Styrene and some are Vinyl depending on the pressing plant. In the case of 5523 I have 2 different DEMO's one with A & B the other A & A. I don't know if this happened with any of the other numbers. I have two different DEMO copies for 5519 i.e. Could I expect to find a DEMO copy of Mirwood 5511 with "My Little Girl" on the B Side ? I hope that this helps. Edited October 26, 2006 by 45cellar

Also, what if any,was the relasionship between Mirwood & Mira ? Think you're in the ballpark on that price - mine came from Adey Pierce at no more than 20. AFAIK Mira was the pop-orientated branch...my favourite in that style has to be The Forum "The river is wide"...but there may have been some crossover between labels. Jerry. Also, what if any,was the relasionship between Mirwood & Mira ? Hi Martyn According to Manship's 3rd Edition 5510 DEMO is worth £20. However I haven't seen many DEMO's. I have noticed though, as with the others there are different Stock Copies .....................VINYL....................................VINYL....................................STYRENE I don't know if more DEMO's are about, but I haven't seen many considering the £20 VALUE. I wonder if there is a Styrene DEMO? I have one on The Mira Label which also had a release on Mirwood There obviously looks to be a connection, I would hazard a guess at them both being owned by Randy Wood, but I'm not sure. All that I have seen is the Okeh 45 White DEMO and the Okeh 45RPM Re-Issue Stock Copy. As for Cigarette Ashes, It must be the most elusive of the Mirwood DEMO's.
