Paul R Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 The recent post talking about The Voices Of East Harlem, Cashing In, reminds me of something about many early 70s recordings, the use of metaphors to describe various relationships. Obviously Cashing In, comparing life with finance. Others include Eloise Laws, Love Factory and Lynn Vernado, Wash And Wear Love. Are there any others that spring to mind? Paul

Peter99 Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Ha! I guess you could put The Snake in there. Metaphorically speaking or otherwise it's crap! Have to point out though that Al Wilson is one of my favourite soul artists - that record aside, he's awesome. Peter 1
Guest MBarrett Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 "Figures of speech" - i.e. what exactly is what - sometimes make my head want to explode. And that of course is some kind of figure of speech in its own right! What about Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit"? The title anyway. Is that a metaphor? Maybe . . . . . . . MB

Roburt Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Mel & Tim "Backfield In Motion" and I guess "Picking Wild Mountain Berries" Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson ... both really bout making love.
Davenpete Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 (edited) The Ice Man, I'm a Big Man and Mr Bang Bang Man... Would've thought the 70s was a bit more direct with things like Menage et Trois, In the Bush, Weekend and Spank (Jimmie Bo Horne's best - : ) ). Dx Edited August 29, 2016 by DaveNPete 1
dean jj Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 The Exciters 'Blowing Up My Mind' has a frequency of quite mental imagery that remains unsurpassed. Looking at this backwards is Dee Dee Warwicks 'Where Is That Rainbow' really about narcotics? dean
Thecivilservice Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Soul survivors expressway to your heart is full of driving / relationship metaphors

Guest MBarrett Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 (edited) Is this an analogy, or a simile, or a comparison or a metaphor. Must be one or other of those. LOL! Just Like The Weather - Nolan Chance Edited August 29, 2016 by MBarrett

Guest Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 So, Turning My Heartbeat Up.....is it about music, narcotics or a bit of 'ows yer father? Whichever, its more than enough to fill his loving cup and still he wants more! It builds to a gigantic crescendo at the end. Had me cross eyed for years that one. ?
