The recent post talking about The Voices Of East Harlem, Cashing In, reminds me of something about many early 70s recordings, the use of metaphors to describe various relationships. Obviously Cashing In, comparing life with finance. Others include Eloise Laws, Love Factory and Lynn Vernado, Wash And Wear Love. Are there any others that spring to mind?

Ha! I guess you could put The Snake in there. Metaphorically speaking or otherwise it's crap!

Have to point out though that Al Wilson is one of my favourite soul artists - that record aside, he's awesome.

"Figures of speech" - i.e. what exactly is what - sometimes make my head want to explode. And that of course is some kind of figure of speech in its own right! :)

What about Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit"? The title anyway. Is that a metaphor? Maybe . . . . . . .

The Ice Man, I'm a Big Man and Mr Bang Bang Man... Would've thought the 70s was a bit more direct with things like Menage et Trois, In the Bush, Weekend and Spank (Jimmie Bo Horne's best - : ) ).

The Exciters 'Blowing Up My Mind' has a frequency of quite mental imagery that remains unsurpassed. Looking at this backwards is Dee Dee Warwicks 'Where Is That Rainbow' really about narcotics?

Is this an analogy, or a simile, or a comparison or a metaphor. Must be one or other of those. LOL! Just Like The Weather - Nolan Chance

If Just Like the Weather is a metaphor then Storm Warning - Volcanoes.

Is it metaphorically speaking? I though it was a homage to the power of music including those two Jazz greats ?

I thought it was about heroin!

I don't know anything though Mike.

So, Turning My Heartbeat Up.....is it about music, narcotics or a bit of 'ows yer father? Whichever, its more than enough to fill his loving cup and still he wants more! It builds to a gigantic crescendo at the end. Had me cross eyed for years that one. ?
