Soul Books

Shane's topic on new books made me think of some old books, I also collect books on soul and some related music books (jazz etc), couple of books I have seen referenced but have never seen or heard anyone having are:

Sound Of Soul - Phylis Garland (I think thats title/name)

Arnold Shaw - Soul also Honkers and Shouters, (again not totally sure of names, doing this from memory as books not totally out of boxes yet).

they are often in bibliography of older books.

Has anyone seen these, or, hence topic forum, even better have them to sell, condition not too important assuming they are still bound!!

Any other recomendations for obscure books on soul or related cultural books?

Cheers

Jock

Arnold Shaw has a great way with words and as he was record industry guy gets some good stories from the early pioneers of R&B. Whether or not all the stories are true is anpther matter.

John Ponomarenko has a good site with a whole load of book reviews

There's loads of good ones around;

Sound Of The City - Charlie Gillett

Walking To New Orleans - John Broven

They All Sang On The Corner - Philip Groia

Spinning Blues Into Gold - Nadine Cohoda (the story of the Chess Bros - great)

Nowhere To Run - Gerri Hirshey

Rock Archives - Michael Ochs - loads of photographs of great and obscure soul r&b artists

I have an original U.S. copy of Honkers & Shouters in EX condition £20 + postage if you can't find one.

Jock,

Check out www.therandbindies.com, it's more text book than bedtime reading, but looks interesting.

The guy has been writing it for 30 years, volume 4 and only at the letter S :)

Cheers,

Mark.

Karen just bought me volumes 1 & 2 for my birthday, bloody great they are

My Dad got this when they were first published a few years back. Since then he's been in regular contact with the guy who wrote them. He's had 1 and 2 for a while now, but don;t think 3 and 4 have been published yet - else he'd have bored me to tears telling me all about them.

3 is out now, four will be next year. The new updated volumes are far more comprehensive with as much info in volumes one and two as there was in the first two volume set.

Dream Boogie - The Triumph Of Sam Cooke

This one of the best books I have read for years. It has as well as his personal life which wasn't as clean cut as I used to think all of his record deals, studio stories of when seminal records were recorded etc fantastic.Gives a great insight to the music business of the time.I didnt know that he had toured with Bobby Bland who also sang at his funeral. And that Johnny Taylor was very arrogant about his talent or that Johnny Guitar Watson couldnt decide whether he wanted to be a perfomer or take on his hobby full time which was being a Pimp!.Just buy it its brilliant
