I've told this story before and it always comes to mind when I read of DJs /collectors 'discovering' records.

My friend was a postman in central Manchester. Around about 1971, he was trawling the junk shops, markets in Manchester.....he did this most afternoons when his shift finished. He would buy cheap 45s that were obviously soul records and others that had a ' feel' that looked possible..usually labels. Costs..about 10 pence or so.

One such purchase was Chuck Cockerham. We often lent each other our records, and I loved this 45. Nobody seemed to know it, I'd never seen it or heard of it. I tried to buy it off him a few times. He declined because he liked the tune too.

Years later, I bumped into him and he informed me he had sold most of his records, and I could have the remainder as a job lot. Not too cash much as I recall. Chuck Cockerham was included in this bundle..joy of joys.

About 1989 I traded this 45 for 2 cassettes off unissued Motown and a Northern set. I distinctly recall offering this 45 as a trade, and the stall holder ( collector/ DJ well known) played a few seconds of the track, liked it and agreed to swap, so in effect , I sold it for £1 or £2 approximately.

He either didn't know the disc...or was a superb poker player...

Years later I heard that is was extremely rare and was 'discovered' by xyz...bit like the question 'what was the biggest island before Australia was discovered'

LOL

I think it was 'known' for years, but wasnt played properly until the late 8ts (?)....even then, it was some years before it really got going.....'discovering' a record, what ever that really means, is totally different from having the jubulies to actually play it at a packed All Nighter, & persisiting with it, until it finally 'hits' (sometimes) they are two totally different beasts all together.

Great rekkid.
