Dave Moore
Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer... I knew about the Mystics/Mystiques Put Out The Fire but was wondering if it's the same group on Olympia? Regards, Dave Link to comment Social source share

There were probably over 100 different groups called "The Mystics" included in the various music genres . Link to comment Social source share
Roburt
That Olympia label is a 70's outfit from Cincinnati Ohio. One other 45 on the label I know about (+ an LP by Bobby Kent). Other 45 is by Fast Eddie & Fast Company ..... Dave Thorley has a copy for sale -- "Love Madness" (so will be able to tell you the names involved ... but I believe its a Eddie Fast*@?*^* PLUS the Bill Lane who was responsible for the Mystics 45). Roburt
Guess this Mystics were from Cincinnati .... as were the doo-wop group on King back in 62/63 (I bet these guys were more to Robb's liking) .... Gene Redd was involved with these 60's guys .... Link to comment Social source share
Roburt
Info on the 1962/63 group on this clip ........ group included Claude Johnson & Don Thomas (later of Drifters) ... .... seems that the surname of the 3rd guy would have been Morris (judging by the names of the above song's writers) .... Dave Pinch
this outfit from the west coast too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_x7Vlqwhjo Edited June 10, 2016 by dave pinch Link to comment Social source share
Roburt
COINCIDENCE .......... Claude Johnson in 62/63 Cincinnati group .... ... Marshall Johnson, writer / producer for Calif group. Obviously Marshall Johnson was at least half of the label ownership .... the MAR in MARquette as he & Gene Page were also heavily involved in the other 45 (Rick Baker) released on Marquette in 68. Pacifica (where the label was based) is on the coast just outside SanFran. So that Mystics is yet another soul outfit using the name. Robbk
I've seen Claude Johnson have a lot of credits on tiny Chicago labels in the 1960s. Specifically, I remember him as a writer/producer with Trans World Sound and its subsidiary, June Bug Records. But, I seem to remember his name on several other Chi-Town labels. So, I'd guess he was from Chicago. The group may have been from Chicago, and yet signed to Cincinatti's King Records. King had offices in Detroit, and, I believe, they had a presence in Chicago (despite not having an official stand-alone office) during the 1960s. Gene Redd Sr. (not to be confused with his son-who worked mainly out of New York (except when in Detroit for Stephanye) was A&R man at King. So, he worked with many of the groups. Roburt
Info on Don Thomas in this 5 year old NY newspaper article .......... ... https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/sole-surviving-drifter-don-thomas-60s-b-sound-alive-bronx-article-1.991569 Seems he was originally from Richmond, Va and in a group before the Drifters (who he joined after 65) called the Dealers. That Dealers are listed as a Cincinatti group (on Big Bunny) and they also worked with Claude Johnson, who usually worked out of New York. Lonnie Youngblood (also east coast) and Charles 'Don' Thomas were also involved with the group's songs. So I'd guess that the Mystics were actually from Cincinnati and when they split, Don Thomas joined / formed the Dealers till he was recruited by the Drifters. Robbk
Big Bunny was run by Bunny Jones, located in New York. I always thought The Dealers worked out of New York. And that must be where Don Thomas connected with The Drifters. I guess there must have been two Claude Johnsons, one in New York, and one in Chicago.
