Pete S Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Joanie Sommers - Don't Pity Me - Warner Bros demo. Fair enough, except they say it's mono / stereo! For a start, it should have a different B side, secondly mono/stereo promos didn't exist in 1964-65 did they? Surely this is a scam? https://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-45-Joanie-Sommers...tem110040327595

Surely this is a scam? https://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-45-Joanie-Sommers...tem110040327595 Mono/Stereo demos didn't really come in until the late 60s, Pete - they were primarily introduced to cater for the growth of FM radio in the USA. As my genuine (mono) demo of "Don't Pity Me" has "My Block" on the other side, like every other demo of it that I've ever seen, and as not one of my other 40-odd Warner Brothers mono/stereo demos is any older than 1971, I agree that this is indeed a scam of some kind. TONE

Modernsoulsucks Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Seller seems to have good feedback and been on Ebay for a good while. Bit of a cheapish 45 to try to scam a buyer? ROD
Pete S Posted October 6, 2006 Author Posted October 6, 2006 Seller seems to have good feedback and been on Ebay for a good while. Bit of a cheapish 45 to try to scam a buyer? ROD Seeing as it usually sells for 250 quid and over, it's hardly cheap!
Modernsoulsucks Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Pete,I meant if you're gonna rip some buyer off then why not Al Williams,Cairos, William Powell etc. ROD
Winnie :-) Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Pete,I meant if you're gonna rip some buyer off then why not Al Williams,Cairos, William Powell etc. ROD ============== Would people not check more thoroughly if they're spending thousands? Just a question
Modernsoulsucks Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 ============== Would people not check more thoroughly if they're spending thousands? Just a question I think you'll find there's a few buyers in the past who haven't checked. ROD
Winnie :-) Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 I think you'll find there's a few buyers in the past who haven't checked. ROD =========== My logic said if you're going for the big sounds you'd make more effort to ensure you're not being ripped off. Realise some may still not check, just thought it would be easier to sell a cheaper rip off than a more expensive one.
Guest Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 just e-mailed the high bidder to tell him its a bad un?? how can he retract bid as there is less than 12 hours left any ideas

Guest Trevski Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 (edited) just e-mailed the high bidder to tell him its a bad un?? how can he retract bid as there is less than 12 hours left any ideas fill out a bid retraction form stating cannot contact seller, worth a try, or contact seller and ask them to cancel the bid. Failing that, if they win it, ebay says I won an item but no longer want to purchase it. What should I do? A bid or Buy It Now purchase on eBay is considered a contract and you are obligated to purchase the item. However, mistakes sometimes happen, and many sellers are willing to work with you if you communicate with them openly and honestly. If you have not done so already, you may want to request the seller's contact information and give the seller a call. Let the seller know your situation, and see if you can work things out to everyone's satisfaction. If the seller does not respond in the way you hope, keep in mind that failing to purchase an item you have won may result in negative feedback, as well as an unpaid item strike against your account. Too many unpaid item strikes in too short a period may result in permanent suspension of your eBay account. I'd rather an unpaid item strike than being ripped off! Edited October 6, 2006 by Trevski
Col Wolfe Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 the buyer appears to have a strong get-out clause: Seller's return policy:Return Policy Details: I STAND BEHIND MY AUCTIONS. UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED I OFFER A 100% SATISFACTION MONEY BACK GUARANTEE.

With modern equipment - How could you get such a low quality image? Seen better quality logos on a fax. I hope it's genuine but in my experience - I've never seen an early WB DEMO Double A If it's an in house Acetate/One off then ?, but the image ........ mmm The seller should invest in a good camera or scanner Edited October 6, 2006 by 45cellar

Guest Soul Sid Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 (edited) Hi Pete SoulSid If iever got ripped off on E-Bayie. If a record wasnt an original, firstly i always get insurance on anything over £30.00 in value, but if the 45 wasnt to my satisfaction for whatever reason and the seller seemed a bit dodgey i would say that the 45 was cracked or damaged on recieving it and claim a refund. Cheers. Sid Edited October 7, 2006 by Soul Sid

shute Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 (edited) Hope I've not broken any fringement here, but just came across this - this 45 my well have been a one off in her earlier days ...... 1959 Taken fron Joannie Sommers Biogrophy Sommers, whose real name is Joan Drost, was born in New York but grew up in California. During her high school and college years, she sang in school bands. She was 18 years old when Warner Bros. signed her to a contract in 1959 and paired her with Edd Byrnes on one of his singles. She also had a small role in 77 Sunset Strip, the television series that featured Byrnes in the role of Kookie. In addition, she sang on Byrnes' "I Don't Dig You" and "Hot Rock," which appeared on one of his albums. Sommers released an album of her own, the jazz-oriented Positively the Most, and it helped establish her presence in easy listening and adult circles. Fans and critics often cite her 1965 album, Softly the Brazilian Sound, as one of her best efforts. just a thought, as I'm not as knowlagueable on this subject cauld be a case of ''benifit of the dought'' ????????? What you on about Shute? You're saying Don't Pity Me might be from 1959? Are you mad? Plus the fact we've already established that WB didn't do mono stereo demos back in 64..

Sweeney Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 Two wrongs don't make a right. If the record wasn't to your satisfaction, why not just request a refund and return the record. Why resort to such underhand tactics? I agree. One of the reasons I stopped selling on Ebay was the fact that people were beginning to return records for no good reason and threatening to neg you if they didn't get a refund. I think people regard it as a normal shop rather than an auction site. I could understand there being a cause for a refund if the goods weren't described accurately or were faulty/damaged, but in one case, the bloke had apparently 'spent too much on records that month' and wanted his money back! He also returned the records (about £250 worth) by normal post without insurance or tracking!
