jam66 Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 (edited) Did a quick search but couldn't find anything/wrong search term but I thought I'd raised the subject before so if I'm being an old fart mumbling in the corner excuse me and just delete. Ellusions one of the best Sax breaks on Earth or am I missing something, Mr Big Shot is something else as well. Any others you can think of? Edited April 9, 2016 by jam66
Roburt Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 Well if you're into sax playing on record, you can't do much better than many Jnr Walker tracks ... OR .. what about this played-out stomper ... too fast for me but ho-hum ...
Wicked Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 Not Northern or rare, but anything by King Curtis. 1 1
Sjclement Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 Don't want to appear picky but its actually saxophone 1

Chalky Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 I keep seeing Jnr Walker mentioned but wasn't he very limited in what he could actually play and a lot of clever editing/production work behind many of his finished products at Motown?

I'm not a big fan of Jnr Walker, Hip City is only one I like. Thought he was ok, but wouldn't rave about him.
Gilly Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 There is 2 sax breaks in The Illusions, to add a couple of my liking "Just Another Girl" Four Pros a d the Appreciations on Aware 1

Think it was mentioned in Sounds of the Sixties the other week that Jnrs vocal was in a higher register than his sax playing so the sax bits were speeded up an edited.
Soul Shrews Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 Excec Four "I"ve Got A Good Thing Going" Cheers Paul 1
jam66 Posted April 9, 2016 Author Posted April 9, 2016 Think the thing about Jr Walker is how high his profile was and as soon as you think of a saxOphone (), he's the one that springs to mind. Saw him at Wigan and a bunch of those in front of the stage were waving toy sax's at him, you know who you are.
jam66 Posted April 9, 2016 Author Posted April 9, 2016 Cam across this whilst looking for something. Nice bit of 50's style blowing but no idea who it is. The artist listed was keyboards so just a session musician?

Roburt Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 (edited) I've always loved the sax bits in this (& the singin' .. & the piano tinklin' by Nina herself) ... moody as HELL !! Edited April 10, 2016 by Roburt
Roburt Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Bob Crewe produced this on the Motivations ........
jam66 Posted April 11, 2016 Author Posted April 11, 2016 Funnily enough I was just listening to the Motivations from a sales list. Queue Astors Twilight Zone This Lady is highly regarded.
jam66 Posted April 11, 2016 Author Posted April 11, 2016 Since I've wandered over into Jazz this guy carries quite a rep. Should have realised it might end up here considering which instrument it is.
Tobytyke Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Grover Washington. Aint No Sunshine ...nice relaxing. Then the other side of the spectrum The Sharpees Do the 45
Roburt Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Lots of saxy sax on this MS anthem from one of the Windy City's finest ......... the late great .........

I play the sax so know a little. Jr Walker was no 3 chord player, Saw him many times, always amazing. He inspired me to try to learn. Always loved the sax in Ike & Tina Cant Chance a Breakup. Anything by Wilton Felder is immense. Inherit The Wind, featuring Mr Womack of course, TUNE. 1 1
Chris Turnbull Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Just played Wilton Felder the other day for the first time in ages, still magical Always loved the sax in this one - really dirty, pitched slightly off key - wonderful

Someday we'll all be free, is better for me. Think it's Grover Washington on the full version of Esthers What a Difference-why did they edit THAT ??
