silliest thing on emidisc

in the 70s the only way for us youth to get the top tunes of the day was to get someone to put whatever you wanted on both sides of an emidisc, you could basically have anything you want, some choices at the time now seem a bit bizzare, eg. Just found one with

I used to have the Champion on EMI and the notorious Sweet Talking Guy inst from the Casino (part of my sod you collection that included most of the Soussan insts), remember Mr Buck (NOT to say I don't have massive respect for JB) used to play Are You Ready For This off EMI at the Unicorn - and much to everyone's amusement it jumped too!

Tobi Legend - 'Time ...' / Danny Monday - 'Baby without you' / Pointer Sisters - 'Send him back' / Rodger Collins - 'Sexy sugar plum'.

Still got it.

How about these two " Looney tunes" I had off Brian 45 Phillips in 1970 at a. Fiver each; The Dynatones=" Baby do the Philly Dog" / "Philly Dog''  ( the former is a sax instro off their flute/fife  laden MOR L.p.  the latter a  flautist version of the Markeys,  by  Herbie Mann, secondly an inspired coupling of ;  The Incredibles = "There's Nothing Else to Say"/ Barbara Lewis  "Someday Were Gonna Love Again" replete with Letraset A,s! And sadly I really believed they where Special items, despite the atrocious sound quality!

You might have a rare gem there !  
Before the orange Tomorrow label appeared, promos made for some DJ's for some of Ian's recordings, appeared first as handwritten Emidiscs. I mean the actual labelled Emidiscs not just plain black discs, so technically that is probably a "pre-demo first time in any format, made for DJ use only" Emidisc you have there. (I remember amongst the ones I saw/owned there was also one called Swallow Your Pride) I'm sure Ian L can confirm/deny if this is correct, but as a collector of all his early recordings I'm fairly sure this is accurate ;-)
I'll bet it's worth, err, maybe as much as a pound !!!  but in scene history, priceless !

I had an Emidisc of L.J. JOHNSON - Your magic put a spell on me - before it was issued I believe and spent ages (well hours ) creating a 20th Century demo label, which looked the Biz  (worked in graphic design) as I presumed it would be released on that , bugga came out on Phillips I think , Doh !!

I have seen a couple alternate takes of the early Levine's stuff on a PYE - disc. I have certainly an alternate instrumental of "Reaching for the best" - a sax replaced the vocals if I remember correctly - but as it was 'out' and past its best when I saw it I didn't invest the 50p the seller wanted! It did have a different artist title too - can't remember what it was though," the Century something or other"?

Pete Lawson used to get them made to order at Deroy Studios in Carnforth. I went with him a few times to get them. The good thing was, some of the top DJs used the same place, and the owner of the studio used to tape them, and let Pete pick whatever top sounds there were available from Sam etc!

Keith Bradley, also from Ormskirk used to do them as well, and advertise them in Black Music classifieds. Frank Elson was always threatening them with legal action in B&S.

I've only owned 2 in my life. The first one I bought in 73 off a mate had Butch Baker Working At The Go Go one side, and The Promatics Sugar Pie Honey on the other. Not silly at all. I also got one about 20 years ago in a village car boot sale just outside Portsmouth. That one was International GTOs B/W Bits & Pieces Keep On Running Away . Only half silly.

Back in the 70's an old mate of mine used to have one with "Don't Turn Me Loose" - The Newbeats on it.    A monster sound everywhere, for a short period of time.

The flip side more than made up for it, as it had the wonderful, relatively unknown then, "You're Gonna Miss A Good Thing" - John Bowie on it.

 A friend of mine got a lot of EMIs, think they were from France or Belguim, anyway the worst one he had was the Hawaii Five 0 vocal / instrumental which sounds awful now, but whenever did spots in Youth clubs etc they packed the floor.

Fast forward a few years and he is sellin them off at Wigan a few at a time and had them in a 50 count box with some originals and a guy picks up the box to look thru and says the box is too heavy, must be emis in here and preceeds to tip the box back and forwards and then says if I get the number right, can I have one for a quid, if I am wrong I give you a quid.

My friend says no way you can guess that so sure and ofc the guy guessed right and got a copy of Paul Anka / Carol & Gerri for a quid, funny times.

first one in our house was Liberty "Girl You Better Wake Up" and King Erisson "Zola" , the Mecca/Cleethorpes influence was big in Leicester back then, I don't think this combo will win the silly prize though..
