Tezza Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Was Georgie Fames Sweet Thing ever officially released as a Single prior to the 'Record Store Day ?' Release. If so, what label etc, if not Album ??
AlanB Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 It was on Sweet Things album and on a Swedish Columbia single.
Hooker1951 Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Great version by George, very underrated British Soul Artist who when he chose that genre of music was very good indeed. Mick L 1
DerekG Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 This is the Swedish single. I also have a recollection of a European release but not certain (old gimmer) Derek 1
Dimples Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Apart of the swedish 45 It also came out on a french EP and a portuguese EP if you're looking for 7" format. Top version imho.
Roburt Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Georgie cut many covers of soul songs coz he loved R&B / jazz so much. His live act (back in the 60's) consisted of just about all soul songs & with him playing a Hammond B3, he could add that Stax feel to many. He did by far the best version of "Tower of Strength" IMHO.
Casino76 Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 i saw Tony flanagan sing this live in barrow in furness last year when i went to watch chapter five , Tony was the original drummer in chapter five, it was a fantastic version & a fantastic night and to hear them sing you can`t mean it live that was even better. 1
Roburt Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 (edited) Another Gene McDaniels cut that Georgie did better than the original (IMHO) was "Point Of No Return" which was a main stay in Georgie's live act back in the day. Georgie liked his soul covers to be LP tracks & fell out with his record label when they insisted that a cover of a Billy Stewart track (Sitting In The Park ?) came out on 45. Dean Rudland Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Georgie's cover of Point Of No Return was based on Louis Jordan's. He also recorded a Jack Ashford composition 'For Love The Petals Fall', which he heard Jack perform at soundcheck for the first Motown Tour of the UK. He asked Jack about it and is as far as we can work out the only person to have recorded it.
dean jj Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 does a great version of 'papa;s got a brand new bag'
jimmy clitheroe Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 It also is on a French Columbia ep .. Love it !!
Kris Holmes Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Just played his "Sitting In The Park" at a gig the other week.
