Pete S Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Hi Samantha What you need is the 6 DVD set of the Beat!!! German Bear Family produced them last year. All sorts of obscure artists as well as the more well known. Anyone needing those can also contact me
Pete S Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 This is a brief list of some dvd's I do, I have heavily censored this list in case of copyright issues which I'm not too clear about (are the tv clips copyrighted?) anyway if there's anything here that shouldn't be just remove it, I'll send a complete list which has twice as much as this on to anyone who wants one 1) Northern Soul On Dvd! Volume One 3 Hours This england - the original wigan casino documentary from 1977. This is a new copy and while nowhere near 2002 tv quality it's miles better than the most people's copies, keeps it's colour throughout and has no breaks. Chasing rainbows - nice footage from stafford at it's peak including a great clip of eddie holman doing "she's wanted in 3 states" Midlands motown - only shown in the local bbc area, this is a look at the resurgence of northern and modern soul in the east midlands. Includes footage from various local clubs plus an on set report from the upcoming movie "function at the junction" Liquid news - bbc choice gets in on the act with this 5 minute news report on the first allnighter at the rocket in london Johnny vaughan show - the "hilarious" northern soul patrol arrive at a chinese supermarket, roll out their carpet and dance to northern in front of bemused customers Old grey whistle test - a visit to the blackburn allnighter in 1988 Clocking off - middle aged couple pay a visit to the ritz and dance to "the champion" with real soulies in this bbc drama So it goes - good report on the morecombe allnighters circa 1984 from gary crowley. Features richard searling with hair. This is a new copy and is ten times better than the one currently in circulation Soul survivors - a good 30 minute documentary from 2000 which was only shown in the bbc yorkshire area. Features footage from brighouse, cleethorpes plus lots of old clips Pioneers - a late night channel 4 item from 2002 attempting to explain the wigan casino legend. Lots of good footage and interesting interviews. The word - tongue in cheek report on northern soul from 1993 Arts file - early 90's overview from the bbc, actually a fairly intelligent look at the scene Jameson's people - 15 minute look at a couple's life on the scene, in this case well known dj and collector phil dick. Some terrific dancing footage in this clip. 25 years of wigan casino - a 30 minute granada tv documentary from september 1998, excellent stuff with edwin starr doing a superb acapella version of "i have faith in you" 2) Northern Soul On Dvd Volume 2 This compilation rounds up the remaining tv clips that were not on the first volume. With this and volume 1, you literally have everything concerning northern soul that's been broadcast on tv. Short stories - starring in cleethorpes Channel 4 1996. Features the cleethorpes weekender and doris troy's appearance there This england - the outtakes Astonishing footage cut from the actual tv broadcast. Some of the dancing footage here is ten times better than the material they actually showed, plus there's a lot more footage from the record bar etc etc. Overdubbed with a typical stomping casino soundtrack. Nb these are in full colour, not the crappy washed out black and white footage like on those vhs copies The beat of the night Itv night network circa 1989. 5 minute fashion feature featuring dancing to sweet darlin. Granada reports - soul survivor Granada 1998. A lookback at wigan casino, interview with russ, tim brown in the studio Blue juice Movie 1994. The northern clips from the film. Paul ross show Tvs 1997. Similar to the above but no tim brown J Video diary Tvs 1998. Following a young man on his northern soul evening out Nwa Granada 1996. Excellent report by mark radcliffe on the northern scene..lots of good footage and interviews Classic caf Bbc 2001. This is a feature about nogsy, juxtaposing his job with his devotion to ns. I think. Very interesting 10 minutes with some footage from (i think) bedford soul night and an excellent dancing lesson Channel 4 1995. Basically a documentary about scooter runs but features a 100% northern soundtrack. Interesting. This england Granada 1977. Have added this on the end so that anyone wanting to buy just this england can choose between volume 1 or 2. Total running time is 3 hours. 3) Northern Soul On DVD Volume 3 2003's northern soul clips are all here: the trevor nelson soul nation report on northern, a superb show from granada called in the club which has a brilliant look back at wigan casino, and mark lamarr's soul underground with a general overview of the scene from a southern point of view. The actual dvd is 3 hours long so look out for some surprises including the extremely rare bbc tv play "out on the floor" from 1982 - impossible to find in this quality and never repeated on tv! It looks as if it was filmed at wigan casino - people say it wasn't, but if not they've built an exact replica - and features a great soundtrack culled from grapevine 45's. There's other extra clips on the dvd to make the running time 3 hours including the dance competition from wigan 25th anniversary at stoke 4) Soul A-Go-Go Fantastic Footage From 1964 Upwards. All Are Complete Clips, Most With Intros From The Shows' Hosts, And Over Half Are Actual Live Vocals So You Can Hear 'Alternate' Takes Of Don't Pity Me And You're Gonna Love My Baby. All Footage Is From "Hullabaloo" And "Hullabloo A-Go-Go" Unless Stated And Is Perfect Picture Quality. Extras Are Very Good To Excellent. If You See Copies Of This Around They Are All Pirated From This Original Copy. Jr Walker - Shotgun / Supremes - I Hear A Symphony / Mitch Ryder - Jenny Take A Ride / Len Barry - 123 / Dobie Gray - The In Crowd / Kim Weston - Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me) / The Toys - A Lovers Concerto / Sue Thompson - Paper Tiger / Leslie Gore - My Town My Guy And Me / Barbara Mcnair - You're Gonna Love My Baby / Outsiders - Time Won't Let Me / Sam The Sham & The Pharoahs - Woolly Bully / Joanie Sommers - Don't Pity Me / Supremes - Back In My Arms Again / Joe & Eddie - Walkin' Down The Line / Four Tops - Ask The Lonely / Frankie Valli - You're Gonna Hurt Yourself / Impressions - Womans Got Soul / Marvin Gaye - How Sweet It Is / Marvin Gaye - Ain't That Peculiar / Miracles - Going To A Go Go / Marvelettes - Don't Mess With Bill / Martha & The Vandellas - Nowhere To Run / Supremes - Nothing But Heartaches / Four Tops - Something About You / Little Anthony & The Imperials - Hurt So Bad 5) Motown 40 - The Music Is Forever Dvd (1998) This is an absolute must for anyone with the remotest interest in soul music.undoubtedly the best documentary on motown ever made. To coincide with motown's 40th anniversary, abc comissioned this documentary and it is extremely thorough, tracing the history of music in detroit pre-motown, through the formative motown era, the golden age of the 60's, and right up to date. The best thing about this documentary is that it appears that the guys who made the documentary actually like the music, and therefore they have done a fantastic job in tracking down archive footage. I would say that i have never seen at least 70% of the footage on this tape. Plus all of the major (and many of the minor) players are interviewed at length, including probably the most candid interviews with berry gordy to date. If it sounds like i'm hyping this program up, then just watch it you'll see it's everything i say it is. Trust me - it's fantastic! It runs for an amazing 3 hours, and is in stereo. The picture is excellent considering it has been transferred from the usa ntsc format. Motown 40 Narrated By Diana Ross Including Classic Archive Footage From Martha & Vandellas, Miracles, Marvelettes, Little Stevie Wonder, Contours, Supremes, Temptations, Jackson 5, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, Jr Walker, Velvelettes, Kim Weston, Gladys Knight & The Pips..The List Is Endless Interviews With Scores Of Artists, Writers, Producers, Musicians, Dj's, Tv Hosts Etc, Hundreds Of Rare Black And White And Colour Photographs And So On.. 6) Best Of The Beat This footage from the beat is all taken from the fantastic local texas tv show broadcast from 1965 to early 1967. In many cases it is the only footage available of these artists. My original compilation had to be dubbed from a master vhs copy which in turn was recorded from the separate originals, therefore you were automatically two away from the master tape. This time i've recorded it straight from the master onto dvd, and then copied the dvd, losing no quality whatsoever. Note that a time code runs throughout these clips, after a while you get used to it and don't notice it. The quality is vg. Very few picture breaks and full colour, but due to the source and the fact it was transferred over from ntsc, do not expect digital quality. It is perfectly good though and if anyone had told me that i would be able to watch the likes of mamie galore, gerri hall, jamo thomas and the dolls performing their northern classics on my own tv, i'd have said they were mad! Little Milton - We're Gonna Make It / Frank Howard & The Commanders - Shotgun / Little Milton - Who's Cheating Who / Esther Phillips - Just Say Goodbye / Etta James - Something Gotta Hold On Me / Latimore Brown - I Feel Good / Lee Shot Williams & Gerri Taylor - Tighten Up Your Game / Cleo Randle - Big City Lights / Mighty Joe Young - Sufferin' Soul / Carla Thomas - Move On Drifter / Jimmy Church - The Duck / Frank Howard & The Commanders - Land Of 1000 Dances / Joe Tex - Fresh Out Of Tears / Carla Thomas - Baby Let Me Be Good To You / Jimmy Church - I Can't Turn You Loose / Gerri Taylor - Empty Arms And Bitter Tears / Jimmy Church - Uptight / Barbara Lynn - What'd I Say / Little Gary Ferguson - I Feel Good / Barbara Lynn - You'll Lose A Good Thing / Kelly Brothers - I'd Rather Have You / Joe Tex - If Sugar Was As Sweet As You / Charles Hodges - My Half A Heart / Mighty Hannibal - Jerking The Dog / Wanda Rouzen - Come See About Me / Dolls - And That Reminds Me Of You / The Dolls - The Reason Why / Johnny Taylor - Changes / Rodge Martin - Respect / Rodge Martin - They Say / Maurice & The Radiants - Voice Your Choice / Maurice & The Radiants - Baby You Got It / Johnny Taylor - Rome Wasn't Built In A Day / Maurice & The Radiants - You've Been Cheating / Maurice & The Radiants - Shotgun / Poppies - Lullaby Of Love / Les Watson & The Panthers - Beg Me / Gwen Davis - I Can't Be Your Part Time Baby / Robert Parker - Barefootin' / Latimore Brown - Treat Her Right / Gwen Davis - My Man Don't Think I Know / Mamie Galore - It Ain't Necessary / Jamo Thomas - I Spy For The Fbi / Robert Parker - Just A Little Bit / Chuck Bernard - Talkin' Bout My Baby / Mamie Galore - Special Agent 34-24-38 / Robert Parker - Let's Go Baby (Where The Action Is) / Jamo Thomas - Arrest Me / Latimore Brown - Your Bag Of Tricks / Frank Howard & The Commanders - I'm Glad I Found You / Rodge Martin - Lovin' Machine / Gerri Hall - Who Can I Run To / Bobby Hebb - Sunny / Tammy Mcknight - Take Away These Chains / Eva Larch - Bye Bye Baby / Four M's - The Monkey Time / Joe Simon - Long Hot Summer / Vernice Stalks - Everything He Needs / Willie Mitchell - 24-75 / Don Bryant - That Sweet Baby Talk / Mitty Collier - I'm Having A Party / Otis Redding - Mr. Pitiful / Garnet Mimms - I'll Take Good Care Of You / Percy Sledge - When A Man Loves A Woman N.B. Bear Family in Germany have tracked down the masters for these shows and are issuing them with (I think) 5 episodes per disc, a four disc set, at around £20 each - obviously they are far better quality than the one above but this one here features all the Northern clips in one place. 7) THE T.A.M.I. - T.N.T SHOW 1964-65 Incredible concert recorded for us tv featuring an amazing line-up, co-produced by phill spector - worth it just for the james brown clips aprrox 90 minutes Chuck Berry / James Brown / Ray Charles / Bo Diddley / Marvin Gaye / Gerry & The Pacemakers / Lesley Gore / Jan & Dean / Smokey Robinson & The Miracles / The Rolling Stones / The Ronettes / The Supremes / Ike & Tina Turner 9) TEEN TOWN 1965 U.S. TV show. A very special episode of this interracial, Detroit- based, 60s teen dance show that salutes the Motown Record Corporation through words, music and film! Musical performances by the Marvelettes, the Supremes, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and Stevie Wonder. Host Robin Seymour interviews Barry Gordy about the history of Motown and shows fabulous film footage of behind the scenes at Hitsville U.S.A. 1 THE MARVELETTES - PLEASE MR POSTMAN 2 THE MARVELETTES - TOO MANY FISH IN THE SEA 3 THE MIRACLES - SHOP AROUND 4 THE MIRACLES - COME ON DO THE JERK 5 THE SUPREMES - COME SEE ABOUT ME 6 THE TEMPTATIONS - MY GIRL 7 LITTLE STEVIE WONDER - HEY HARMONICA MAN 8 LITTLE STEVIE WONDER - CASTLES IN THE SAND 9 LITTLE STEVIE WONDER - FINGERTIPS On the same disc is THE MOTORTOWN REVUE LIVE AT THE APOLLO 1963 U.S. TV. Early Motown live! Very interesting to see these artists rough around the edges "before they went to "charm school" and became polished and sophisticated. Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, Little Stevie Wonder (12-yrs. old), the Contours, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the Marvelettes, Mary Wells, the Four Tops, the Temptations and others. The classic 1960s soul and rhythm & blues revue! 1 MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS - COME AND GET THESE MEMORIES 2 THE CONTOURS - DO YOU LOVE ME 3 THE SUPREMES - MY HEART CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE 4 MARVIN GAYE - STUBBORN KIND OF FELLOW 5 MARVIN GAYE - HITCH HIKE 6 LITTLE STEVIE WONDER - FINGERTIPS 7 THE MARVELETTES - PLEASE MR POSTMAN 8 THE MARVELETTES - STRANGE I KNOW 9 THE MARVELETTES - LOCKING UP MY HEART 10 MARY WELLS - TWO LOVERS 11 MARY WELLS - BYE BYE BABY 12 THE MIRACLES - YOU REALLY GOT A HOLD ON ME 13 THE MIRACLES - SHOP AROUND 10) NIGHT TRAIN 1965 U.S. TV show. Two rare 1-hour TV episodes. Night Train was an all- black rhythm & blues, vocal group and soul music TV show produced at WLAC, Channel 5, Nashville, TN and hosted by Noble Blackwell. The artists performed live and include the Avons, the Spidells, Hal Hardy, Jimmy Church, Freddie North, Ironing Board Sam, Pamela Releford, Jeffery Allen, Sandra King, Joe Perkins and others! Great rhythm & blues and doo wop sounds! Bonus Selection: Soul performances on TV. n.b. the above is superb, very enjoyable and most artists sing live 11) COAST TO COAST - BBC TV 1986 The excellent comedy thriller starring lenny henry as a mobile soul dj on the run from gangsters. The entire soundtrack is made up of soul classics. Excellent quality copy of this superb film, has never and will never be released officially due to royalty disputes 12) THIS IS SKA Phenomenal film made in 1964 by the Jamaican tourist board to promote jamaica's entry to the 1964 worlds fair. Features live performances from Prince Buster, The Maytals, Eric Morris, Byron Lee, Jimmy Cliff, Stranger Cole etc plus lots of ska dancing instruction. Priceless footage! Also includes BBC documentary on the evolution of reggae. _______________________________________________________________ 16) THE SOUL OF STAX Superb documentary circa 1994 tracing the history of the company, interviews with the founders, producers and acts plus great archive footage. 17) RAY POLLARD & FRIENDS LIVE PLUS MOTOWN TIME CAPSULE Amazing footage of Ray Pollard's first ever live appearance in the UK at the 100 Club followed by his appearance at Great Yarmouth weekender - which also includes Lorraine Chandler, Eddie Parker and Pat Lewis. Bonus footage, a 40 minute film called Motown Time Capsule which mixes artist footage with newsreels from each year of the 60's. Interesting and very obscure! 18) THE ORIGINAL NORTHERN SOUL DANCERS DVD Basically this is 2 hours of footage of dancers recorded at Bradford, Leicester, 100 Club and various other venues, circa late 80's/early 90's, brilliant dancing including dance competitions etc. Relive your youth J 19) MOTOWN ON THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW Includes Smokey & The Miracles, Supremes, Jackson 5, Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Four Tops - 18 performances but worth it just for The Supremes doing Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart 20) MIKEY DREAD PRESENTS DEEP ROOTS MUSIC Essential look at the history of reggae in a 5 part series, all on one disc, think this was possibly shown on channel 4 in the mid 80's. Not perfect quality in parts but priceless footage of Delroy Wilson, Jackie Edwards, Count Machukie, Sir Lord Comic and so on. 21) CLASSIC SOUL AT THE BBC - superb archive performaces Al Green Let's Stay Together Aretha Franklin I Say a Little Prayer Percy Sledge When a Man Loves a Woman Dusty Springfield Get Ready Neville Brothers Tell It Like It Is Curtis Mayfield We Gotta Have Peace Sam Moore I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down Bill Withers Ain't No Sunshine Ann Peebles Bouncing Back Gladys Knight & the Pips Friendship Train Penn & Oldham I'm Your Puppet Bobby Womack I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much William Bell & Texas Private Number Aretha Franklin Don't Play That Song Isaac Hayes When Something is Wrong With My Baby Solomon Burke Don't Give Up On Me 22) SHINDIG PRESENTS Motorcity Magic, Frat Party, British Invasion all on one DVD. Sorry not done the track listing yet but approximately 35 performances from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Supremes, Mary Wells, Kingsmen, etc etc 23) RHYTHM & BLUES FROM THE VAULTS - MORE LEGENDS OF RARE SOUL & R&B Here's another phenomenal collection of super-rare clips from the vaults. Very few of these have appeared on any compilation before. And remember, these are clips from the actual time of broadcast, not 80's, 90's or recent re-recordings. MUDDY WATERS - I'M YOUR HOOCHIE COOCHIE MAN MUDDY WATERS - GOT MY MOJO WORKIN' MAHALIA JACKSON - WHEN THE SAINTS INEZ ANDREWS - WHAT LOVE INEZ ANDREWS - OH MARY DON'T YOU WEEP THE CADILLACS - SPEEDO ETTA JAMES - GOOD ROCKIN' DADDY ETTA JAMES - I'M THROUGH WITH YOU ETTA JAMES - ROLL WITH ME HENRY LITTLE ANTHONY - SHIMMY SHIMMY KO KO BOP THE DIXIE CUPS - CHAPEL OF LOVE FANKIE FORD - SEA CRUISE DEE DEE SHARP - MASHED POTATOES LITTLE RICHARD - TUTTI FRUTTI THE SUPERBS - BABY BABY ALL THE TIME THE CHIFFONS - NOBODY KNOWS WHAT'S GOIN ON JOHNNIE & JOE - OVER THE MOUNTAIN BOBBY DAY - ROCKIN' ROBIN SAM COOKE - CHA CHA CHA JIMMY JONES - HANDY MAN GENE CHANDLER - DUKE OF EARL GENE CHANDLER - NOTHING CAN STOP ME THE IMPRESSIONS - IT'S ALRIGHT THE IMPRESSIONS - WOMAN'S GOT SOUL THE C.O.D.'S - MICHAEL DEE DEE SHARP - I REALLY LOVE YOU KIM WESTON - TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS KIM WESTON - A LITTLE MORE LOVE JIMMY RUFFIN - SINCE I LOST YOU JIMMY RUFFIN - L.O.V.E. WALKER - WHAT DOES IT TAKE JAMES BROWN - OUT OF SIGHT ARETHA FRANKLIN - ONE STEP AHEAD THE FOUR TOPS - REACH OUT I'LL BE THERE THE MAD LADS - COME CLOSER TO ME THE FLIRATATIONS - WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT GOODBYE TAJ MAHAL - AIN'T THAT A LOT OF LOVE I think I'd only seen maybe 4 of these clips previously; the Marvelettes, Kim Weston, Temptations and Jr Walker clips are all from different sources to the usual ones (e.g. Take Me In Your Arms is NOT from Hullabaloo. The Jimmy Ruffin clip is phenomenal. Plus I found the second Flirtations promo from the master tape, recorded at Tintern Abbey once again but this time they have on pink trouser suits instead of evening dresses! 42 tracks on here, that's more than double that are on any previous discs of a similar nature. 24) THE ATLANTIC RECORDS STORY - plus - BBC OMNIBUS DOCUMENTARY "CURTIS MAYFIELD" Two for the price of one here. The Atlantic records Story is a superb documentary shown on Channel 4 a few years back. It traces the history of the label right up to date and has some stunning rare footage of the greatest acts, from ray Charles and Big Joe Turner through Aretha and the Stax sounds, and Led Zepplin and onwards. The Curtis Mayfield documentary is a special recorded by the BBC not long before Curtis death in 1999. It's a great look back on his career but also pretty sad, especially the last few years. Anyway both programs on this disc run for around an hour each. 25) **NEW DVD** ROCK, RHYTHM & DOO WOP I don't know if this is of interest to anyone but it had me spellbound - especially when Little Anthony & The Imperials bought the house down with Hurt So Bad. Basically it's a revival show but a very big budget one, lots of vocal groups and like The Rays, Bobby Lewis, Little Richard, Ed Townshend, Lenny Welch, Frankie Ford, Jay & The Americans, Lou Christie, Joey Dee, The Limelights, The Contours, The Reflections, The Casinos, The Duprees, Kathy Young, Lloyd Price and Jerry Butler. Jerry Butler also comperes the show. Runs at around 2 hours. Really good and rewarding viewing as the crowd give numerous standing ovations and know every word of the songs as well. 26) **NEW DVD** SHEBANG! This is an ultra rare and newly discovered program hosted by Dick Clark. It's supposed to be a Motown special but is mainly kids dancing to Motown tracks, however it features a live interview with and stunning performance by Brenda Holloway, plus The Temptations as well...it's in colour and is in perfect quality. Also on this DVD is an episode of Hollywood A GoGo, soul fans may find this a bit lightweight but Bobby Freeman is superb on this show. Running time is approx 1 hour. 27) **NEW DVD** REGGAE 1970 plus AQUARIUS 1976 "REGGAE" is a legendary film shot by Horace Ove at the 1970 Empire Pool reggae Festival. It features live footage of the likes of The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, The Pioneers, John Holt, Millie etc, plus some wonderful audience shots of skinheads/suedeheads, plus excellent interviews with the movers and shakers of the reggae scene at the time including Lee Gopthal of Trojan records. There's also priceless footage of a typical 1969-70 youth club with the kids dancing to skinhead moonstomp. Brilliant stuff and this has never been official released on video or dvd. On the same disc is London Weekend TV's AQUARIUS show, featuring reggae in Britain 1976. It looks at sound systems, dj's, record shops and features some great live footage including Roy Shirley and Aswad. Running time approx 100 minutes. Other stuff - I've got stacks of music stuff from 60's to punk and beyond; Beat Club, Hullaballoo, Shinding, Beat Beat Beat and so on
