Richard and Bernie Golding, what do any of you remember, Wigan Tiffs and any other venues, one in Manchester where all the unreleased Motown were first played apparently.  Looking for dates, flyers etc.

@Louis you have a few tales mate

Chalky. Wigan tiffs/maxines. Edwin Starr. Live when he was accused of miming. Turned off his backing tapes and sung accapella. Awesome.

One off my mates tipped my 600 chalkies down the toilets because he got paranoid about squad. Bet that took some unblocking (pun intended)

Robin reliant turned on its roof one morning when we came out of the nighter. No one batted a eyelid as though it was perfectly normal.

Date wise I'm sorry mate can't for the life of me remember

Hey up Chalky - fairly certain I've got summat like a flyer and/or ticket tucked away somewhere - but whether I can find it is another matter (laughs......)

Seem to think it was printed on thin card so it might have been a ticket or summat?

Does that ring any bells with anybody else?

I remember going to some of the Wigan Tiffs / Maximes nights at about the time of all those final Casino nights when tempers were getting a bit frayed and it was turning into a bit of a pantomime [oh no it wasn't] .  I just tended to go to the venues where Richard Searling , Soul Sam and other d.js that did it for me musically were booked . Hell of a lot of politics about at the time and the letters pages in echoes and B&S were full of vitriol and endless carping to the point where the jazz funkers and the reggae fans were writing in to complain about the northern soul content. I remember Bernie Golding being quite high profile at the time . also went to a couple of nighters at Tiffanys/Manchester ,first place I heard the Originals - suspicion played by Dave Withers . cant recall the cover up name. bit surreal those Tiffanys gaffs with all the palm trees.

was it . I thought there was a lot of rivalry over Maximes . I know Russ did some there but I seem to remember attending the other camps nights there . those in opposition to all those final nights at the Casino

Weren't the Sheffield Rebels All Nighters SAS events? 1981 - I reckon, right after Wigan closed , I  vividly remember  Richard playing Ruby Wilson "I Thought I Would Never Find Love" off her Malaco LP and that was a 1981 release.

It always seemed to snow heavily when it was on....

Richard, Gary, Arthur, Sam(?) and others no doubt..

I'll have tape listings in my old book if it helps Chalky.

Hi Robin, Rebels def started in 81. I went to every one and was still living in Kent at the time. I remember travelling back on the train with black Frank from Southampton one time.

The SAS alldayer in Shefield was 82-83. I went with you, Neil and Sue. You may recall I came across to yours on the train (well that was the plan) and a farmer in his tractor hit the train at Oakham. Class 31 with damaged front, I was going nowhere. No mobile phones and I was stuck at Oakham. I found a phone box, rang you and you came across and kindly picked me up, before we all headed up to Sheffield.

Think there were maybe three all dayers Steve. Also one at Rotherham Tiffs as well when Crofty was doing one somewhere else.

Certainly Sheffield Tiffs ran an all nighter and a couple of 8-2's but that may have been Richard on his own. Jazz funk main room rest in Bali Hi upstairs.

Did you go to the Turns Ups nighter run by Sam and Arthur ? A club in a residential area. Think it was a one of due to noise . They also ran a couple at Take Two.

Gary didn't do Rebels Robin.

Hi Robin

Some sounds would be great pal.  With each club/venue I'd like to list a selection of records associated with it.

I do have an echoes with advert(s) for the Manchester SAS events, October I think 1981. I think it is there where Dave Withers unleashed all the unissued Motown.

Also an all-dayer @ Shrewsbury Tiffanies I think Feb "83. Remember Glyn Thornhill DJ ing so maybe he can confirm the date. Think it was jazz/funk in the main room and "modern soul" in the smaller one

Cheers Paul

Rebels was the Rock club on Dixon Lane next to Woolworths & at the top of several flights of stairs. You used to wait on the staircase as all the Rock fans staggered down on their way home.
There were 2 clubs called Turn Up's in Sheffield, the other was in town on Commercial Street & Crofty & Adrian ran a few nights there sometime in the mid 80's.
Josephines was a posers nightclub near the City Hall & was ran by a bloke called Dave Allen who also owns Napoleons casino. It got ran down & he sold it to Alan Senior so I can't say any more in case he sue's me for infringing his intellectual property:wicked:.
Not got Steve Crofts number but I can PM you Adrians if you need it but be warned as he can rabbit for England so you might be a while:D

Thought he did Steve, as he was still on the circuit, but it's a long time ago! I do remember hearing The Creations "Just  Remember Me" (can't remember C/U artist which is a pain! - tip of the tongue..) and thought that was Gary at the time but I must be mistaken.. Were you on there?

I'll have a dig around in the loft Chalky and see what I can find..

Don't remember seeing Edwin there but did see Karen black from selector singing to backing tracks, rubbish she was, I bet there was less than 50 people in all night, that would have been early 82..phil

Yes Robin, short lived though it was.

The last one Bernie paid me in records, got home in the morning and found one was Richards " Jimmy Georgetowns"Stars above" cover up on a mint USa white demo.

Gary DEFINITELY did Rebels. I remember it he was on quite late and I remembered thinking at the time that he didn't sit too well with the other DJs on the line up. It was like a modern nighter with an hour of 60s thrown in towards the end.

Posted

Rebels use to start around 1am after the rock followers had emptied / staggered down the stairs.

Was a great seedy back street club where you could program new album cuts alongside modern soul cover ups.

All the DJ 's played across the board from 60 's discoveries / unknowns up to brand new releases . How many chances of that these days  ??

Think I have a Rebels flyer somewhere will dig out.....along with a club review in the old fanzine I was running at the time circa  81 ish ....

Just remembered SAS did a soul night at the Hacienda Manchester...........it's all coming back to me...slowly..it was on the same night that Russ did an all-nighter at Maximes (Wigan Tiffanys).  I went to both of em (as I remember stopping on the M61 hard shoulder for a wee going to Wigan :D)

Karl,  I'm meeting up with Dave Withers next week for a few .....if there is anything specific you want me to ask him then PM me and I'll try and get him to remember......

Just had a root around in my loft Chalky, sadly no flyers or tape listings for Rebels but I have the following dates in my diaries from '81 and '82...

21/11/81 - First All Nighter, then, 5/12/81,19/12/81, 23/1/82 (with Sam, Richard, Arthur, Poke, Steve Mannion ) and finally...20/2/82

So no confirmation on Gary but like Steve G I'm sure he was on at the first ones at least - cheers Steve P for the "Steinways" prompt!

I've also got a "Rebels" 8-2 event with Sam, Richard and Arthur written down. Memory has gone on that one..(Glyn/Arthur... do you remember that?)

Other dates of note around this time are Clifton Hall First Anniversary 13/11/81, a good few dates for Sheffield Tiffs All Niters and a brilliant all Modern All Nighter at "Happy Nites" Sheffield on 9/8/81 - (Sam and Arthur) this was a one off and was really busy which was a surprise after a lot of the upstairs Modern Room do's at Tiffs only having 20/30 people in...I remember Sam getting well carried away with Chuck Simmons "Am I Grooving You" at that one...

Chalky - I've loads of mags/fanzines from the '80's ( and flyers )you can borrow if they will help - and my tape listings of live All Nighter recordings from the '80's. Let me know if you're passing through the North East (you still driving?) and I'm sure we can sort a rendezvous...

I'm sitting here with a SAS flyer for the 1st nighter in Wigan Tiffanys.

the oldies all nighters are to continue in Wigan.

1st all nighter: Friday 2nd October.

DJ's

Richard Searling

Keith Minshull

Gary Rushbrooke

Dave Evison

jolly

Not sure if that was the Dj line up, I think the Casino put another last night on, that night.

That night was also the 2nd End Of An Era nigter at the Casino, a third was in December.  Wigan Tiffs not a success by all accounts because of the Casino.

can you scan me the flyer please Jolly? Hi definition if possible 300dpi? Cheers.

Hi Chalky

The first Tiffanys wasn't that busy, due to the Casino.

the 2nd night was very bizarre.

lots of police interest with camera flashes going off every few minutes. Followed by people getting arrested.

a very strange night. Guess the local law enforcement had enough.

not great with this technology stuff, but will get something to you.

Thanks mate. If you struggle with the tech maybe a loan of the flyer and I can scan and then return them via registered post.
