Guest Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 I just love this forum. Is there any other "scene" that can get so passionate about a particular song or style such as the R & B topic. I humbly suggest that it is because we care so much that the music and everything we love about the scene has endured for over 30 years and if we ever stop being as passionate it will die and all the songs we love will disappear back into obscurity and be lost forever. Phew that was very profound, must stop reading the Times.

Dayo Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 Fenman is right. No-one is more passionate about their music than soul fans - especially rare soul. Maybe it's because we've always been a minority?

Reg Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 And it's not the same is it-these other music scenes. I've been to Indie gigs,"normal" pubs, clubs and all that but it really isn't the same. I mean, you can see the same old faces in your local every week but it's not the same as meeting up with people at soul venues across the country and having a chit chat. And usually you don't even mention the music..Very odd but I love it
Guest Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 Thing is Reg i don't listen to anything other than Soul music, can't see the point in wasting valuble time with some other genre, if i ever do, i find myself twitching, rubbing my hands nervously waiting for the foul track to finish so that i can put one of my babys back on the turntable
Reg Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 Ah okay, fair enough but, being an ex student type (boo hiss..) I go to non soul events with my non soul mates. Which is good as I've converted a couple of em to our cause. PLus, Mr Ducie landlord, my point was that I prefer the soul scene by far..bloody hell I'm generally scared to go in most normal city centre pubs without the aid of a few beers!!

Guest Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 I said this someplade else recently.. so I say it again. With every fashion that enters the media there hangers on and those that follow the hangers on... people are fickle, you will always have that core base of individuals that live, breath and eat the genre - spreading their thoughts and enthusiasm. They will pick people up along the way that will drift in and out but amongst those drifters will be a prodigy that will keep the genre alive. After all, it gains no reputation from the humdrum of normal advertising so for those that are caught up in it, it is purely because of a real feeling and a real calling. Much like any hobby I guess. I talk incessantly about soul like some stupid bitch stuck in some stupid world, with my audience looking at me with a slight aversion in their gaze... who cares! They know how passionate I am, and appreciate my eclectic outlook where music is concerned. They are more than accepting of my travelling needs to feed my expectations and actually very much look forward to my ramblings afterwards. I was once called a Nauseating Bimbo on soulsource, and that the soul scene was a better place without me - I offer no argument against that except that I applaud soul without boundaries and without bollox. A nauseating bimbo I might be, but at least I am shouting our cause from every rooftop I have the privilege to shout from. I am sure my enthusiasm and excitement bleeds into their life a little and for that I am glad. Several non-soul visitors who have attended events because I advertised them have said they thoroughly enjoyed themselves - it's just not the same calling we experience I guess. People take the piss and complain about KFC broadcasting certain soul tracks. For me, I found that quite a turn on - hopeful it would create a furore amongst the record buying public and evoke a different stroke. And yes, I think it did - albeit briefly. After all, how many hardened collectors here really, I mean really, want this genre to hit the big time. Not many I bet. Me? I want to convert the whole world. I have achieved part of that goal with my 9 year old Daughter but failed with my 13 year old Son... it's personal. Can't do more than I do.
Mike Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 I said this someplade else recently.. so I say it again. link bit lost here Karen isn't this the same post that you posted in the "is rnb dead" thread?? not sure what you trying to say mike
mischief Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 :diablo: I don't think it's passion, I think we are a bit odd. I went to dinner the other night, with people from work... Conversation went along the lines of (me) "blah blah blah you listern to chart music because the media tells you to...Blah Blah Blah. You have no idea of whats out there. Blah Blah Blah. I'll do you a cd so you can under stand real SOUL music.." 1 week later. "Paul that cd was good but it was just music why do you go on, and get so passionate about it?" How do you explain it's not just the music, it's the sound, the words, when the artist sang the ment it, they never sang to there bank manager they sang from there heart... and its special to own the orignal record, to look at the label, to check the vinyl... You all know you can go on here so is it a Passion or is it Odd? If I talked about trains, as much i'd be sad.. :Fck_off_by_nulltarget: (sitting at work listerning to ---TERRY COLLINS - I. L.O.V.E. Y.O.U)
Guest Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 (edited) Do we really care what the "Civillian Music Buying Public" think!. I really could care less about other musical genres, we have a great time don't we?.I see it as another persons loss (and one less filthy swine chasing a record i want )Manalive what other activity gives you as much pleasure as this whole bloody scene(be careful, i know what your thinking....still prefer music to that aswell ) So let the world pass us by, i really do not care one jot. Not only are we enjoying the best music ever made but we are giving recognition to some amazing soul artists who without our support would be long and forgotten.................long live soul music
