Guest Classic45s Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) This week, we added three new 45s to our Louise Neal 45 Soul Auctions page, which features eye-popping, previously unplayed promo treasures from the Louise Neal Soul 45 collection. See the Auctions page for photos. If you are interested in bidding, please visit the Louise Neal 45 Soul Auctions page for images and an explanation of the auction process. Andrea Henry, MGM 13893 (promo), 1968. "I Need You Like A Baby / The Grass Is Greener" Condition: M (M|M|M) Both of these are terrific Northern Soul-style dancers, and it's on the strength of "I Need You..." that Kev Roberts includes the single at #330 in his list of the 500 greatest Northern Soul 45s. Whether you agree with Kev Roberts or not, I think you'll find it hard to argue that this single (Henry's only one?) is a must for any decent collection of 1960s Northern Soul. This new, unplayed promo copy comes in its crisp original MGM factory sleeve. It has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio)! Minimum Bid: $400Fluffy Falana, Alpha 007, 1967. "My Little Cottage / Hangover From Love" Condition: M- (M-(x)|M-|M) "Cottage" is a terrific, Motown-style dancer written and produced by Bobby Martin, and after one listen it's easy to understand why it's so sought-after. The flip is an equally engaging ballad. Like Andrea Henry, this appears to have been Fluffy Falana's only recorded output. This new, unplayed stock copy has an "x" on the "Cottage" label, but otherwise the labels are pristine. The vinyl grades very close to mint, with no scuffs and only a tiny bit of storage wear to lower its grade to Near Mint. After a cleaning, the audio, I'm pleased to report, shines through pristine Mint on both sides! MB: $250 High Bid: $450Gorgeous George, Stax 165 (promo), 1965. "Biggest Fool In Town / Sweet Thing" Condition: M (M|M|M) Both of these rare Stax tracks will delight fans of Deep Soul, with the must-have ballad "Biggest Fool" balancing out the fine, uptempo "Sweet Thing." This new, unplayed promo copy comes with an original Stax Records shipping package sent to Louise Neal (under one of her aliases, "Louise Napper"). It has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio)! MB: $90 High Bid: $150 Other 45s still available for bidding include:Invincibles, Warner Bros. 7061 (promo), 1967. "Woman Is The Soul Of A Man / Git It" Condition: M (M|M|M) Wow! Talk about great Northern Soul dance music! You can't go wrong with either side of this rare single, though "Woman" gets the nod from most Northern Soul enthusiasts. This new, unplayed promo comes in a crisp Warner Bros. Records factory sleeve. It has no notable flaws (even a very faint warp is hardly worth mentioning), grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio). MB: $75 Capitols, Portrait 109 (promo), 1962. "I'll Drink A Toast / Fine Momma's Daughter" Condition: M- (M|M-(sw)|M) Northern Soul with a strong RnB vocal group influence. Both of these rare sides are worthy additions to your Soul collection. FYI, this male vocal group isn't the same one that hit on Karen with "Cool Jerk." Note: This new, unplayed promo copy has pristine labels, and the vinyl would also grade Mint but for a very slight, no-impact warp. The audio is pristine Mint, both sides. MB: $65Jimmie Raye, Garrison 3008 (promo), 1967. "You Must Be Losing Your Mind / For The Sake Of Love" Condition: M (M|M|M) This rare single has a dynamite Northern Soul ballad on the A side and an irresistible dancer on the flip! This new, unplayed promo copy has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio). MB: $200Lovelace Watkins, Sue 10-003 (promo), 1964. "Dreams / Who Am I" Condition: M- (M|M-|M-) Although it was actually this single's B side, the mid-tempo "Dreams" draws crowds as a top-notch track with a particularly sweet, crisp rhythm track. This rarely seen, unplayed promo copy has Mint labels. I'm grading the vinyl and audio Near Mint to reflect very light storage wear and very light (but mostly inaudible) surface noise, respectively. ( MB: $150_______Louise Neal was a black female disk jockey from North Carolina who had a 3-hour Soul/RnB/Blues show from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. During that time, she collected thousands of (mostly) promo 45s at her home from the many record companies she was registered with for receiving promotional material--ABC, Atlantic/Atco, Chess/Checker/Cadet, Decca, Brunswick, Shout, Stax/Volt, Fame, Imperial, Jubilee, Okeh, Sue, Philles, SureFine, Vee-Jay, Kent, Duke, Bell, Paula/Ronn, Rojac, Peacock, Motown (all labels), Veep, Capitol, Modern, Dial, Jamie and many others. A large number of these precious 45s accumulated unopened in their original shipping packages after Neal left the business and moved to New York in 1967. (Also during 1963-65, when Neal had earlier left town.) Most are highly collectable and extremely rare Northern Soul singles with book values ranging well above $100... a few above $1,000! Many are pristine--unplayed and with a bare minimum of storage wear. Others may exhibit very light storage wear and/or an "x" marked on the label. A good many come in their original factory sleeve, some of which are rare and valuable on their own these days. The collection also contains rarities and classics of interest to fans of RnB, Blues, Girl Groups, Doo Wop, and various other genres of Rock.We began selling records from the Louise Neal collection in June 2015, and it will take years for us to get through everything.
