Soulfulhound Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 ======= the first 3 records at wigan were :- sherries - put your arms around me detroit sound - jumping at the gogo mike post - afternoon of the rhino quote from russ from echoes mag 76 i thought it was dottie too Afternoon on the rhino wasn't played the first night. Bubble Gum Breakthro' was the big Mike Post sound at that time, which happened to be on the Fused LP as well as the 45. On that LP was another great track, A.O.T.R., which Kev Roberts picked up on, he wasnt in the original Wigan deejay line-up and played it months later. Cheers, Chris 1

Guest Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 (edited) Road to Ruin! Correct ..... The " Earl Wright " record was entitled " On The Road To Ruin " , and was one of Simon Saucepan's many cobbled together outings aimed at the Wigan crowd . It did indeed feature snatches of " Psychedelic Soul " . a truly disgraceful insult to the auditory function of the human being . Malc Burton Edited September 24, 2006 by Malc Burton

Malc Burton As Malc says Road to Ruin has the sound efect from Saxie Russell on the intro and at the mid-way break. The main body of the tiune though is a big chunk of Bernard Purdie's Testifyin' looped twice. It's from the Soul drums LP which got a UK release on Direction, as well as the US Date issue. Some great funk breaks on thatt album if you like that sort of stuff. Godz
Guest Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 what was the 1st record at the 1st allnighter played at wigan by Winstanley? (used to know it but forgot) ALWAYS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THE FIRST RECORD AT THE CASINO WAS THE SHERRYS, FOLLOWED BY R DEAN TAYLOR, THEN THE 3RD WAS LITTLE ANTHONY. WAZZ.
Guest Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Wazz,--"Ghost in my house"--was not played at Wigan until very early 1974,--first three were as previously stated. Tony.C.

I suppose The Champion would be in there too. Pretty sure the LP was known of for a while before the EP turned up. I also remember someone (Russ?) playing Willie Mitchell's version of "Who's Making Love" from the On Top album. And then these's the Total Eclipse Orchestra's "Six O'Clock" which was booted as Supertime by Golden World Strings. In fact I'd go with that one for now Godz 1

Alan Pollard Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 I know the Sherries was the first record played at the Casino but I seem to remember The Tower of Power "This time it's real" being played not long after it, my memory isn't what it was so can anyone else remember it being played. The first LP track I would guess at The Marvelettes "Only your love can save me". Didn't go to the VA VA but I would guess at TheTempos "(Countdown) Here I come" I know was a big tune there. Regards Alan
