Guest in town Mikey Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Cant see if anyone had mentioned Edwin Starr. He did a few anti war songs, War and Give Peace A Chance spring readily to mind.

Mike Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 suppose when you think about it, the subject and style reflects the changes in US public opioin thru out them years from the early "going overseas - be faithfull" type ones all the way to the latter outright stop the war protest ones whats the phase looking for ? backrground social commentary or something
macca Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 excuse me, but bob dylan had as much to do with hippies & vietnam as miles davis had with tiny tim, but we'd better not go there, this being a soul forum etc; there were just two 'folk albums' 62/63 containing 'finger pointing songs'. the next five or six eagle flights changed the course of popular music forever. oh' god, I went there
Sean Hampsey Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Would that be the same Tiny Tim that appeared with Miles Davis on the same bill at the IOW Afton Festival Saturday 29th August 1970, by any chance? Ah, yes, I remember him well. Sean
macca Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 y blodwyn pig probably appeared on the same bill as dylan at the isle wight, but does that mean they're bedfellows? I think not... mac

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Lamont Dozier - Dearest One (Melody). Alan This one may be about being a soldier, but it's not about the Viet Nam war. It came out in the Spring of 1962, well before that war got underway... TONE
Stateside Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Forget me not - Martha Reeves & Vandellas As for Bob Dylan - might have been a songwriter but couldn't sing and if Amy Winehouse shouldn't be mentioned then neither should he. We could fill these pages with so called icons that don't do it for soul lovers so lets leave it there.
Trev Thomas Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 there was a series of articles on this subject a few years ago in "shades of soul" called soulman in vietnam.....couple of tracks that spring to mind..king george - so long johnny - rca lonely soldier - mike williams - atlantic
Martint Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 the impressions - 'stop the war' from their incredible 'times have changed' album

Simsy Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 Lamont Dozier - Dearest One (Melody). Alan That is a superb record as well imo. Really nice vocal from Lam Doz. Well if you're having that, I'm having Ralph Graham - She just sits there ...
sepia Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 THE BITTER & THE SWEET / P.O.W / ANYTHING EVERYTHIG b SIDE OF I WONT HAVE NO BABIES,TIZ A GREAT TUNE ASWELL
Guest Bearsoul Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 (edited) ...Both compiled by - and one annotated by - me, incidentally. Not that I am one to brag about his work (he lied...) There are easily enough great tunes to do a third volume, but the trouble is, most of the tunes we want for it can't be cleared for reissue due to licensing problems. The Chymes' "My Baby's Gone Away" being a case in point, I've tried to get it for both previous volumes but to no avail... TONE FULL MARKS TONE 'A LETTER FROM VIETNAM' EMMANUEL LASKEY.....ACE AS IS OTHER SIDE ' MORE LOVE' CHRIS M Edited September 21, 2006 by bearsoul
Guest mrs norman maine Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 J P Robinson - Our day is here (Blue Candle) Brilliant tune about a guy getting back from the Nam. Only ever heard Dave Taylor play this out, should def be picked up on. Niki Golding played it last night at the very wonderful Monumental. Tip-top.
KevH Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 VIETNAM RECORD...THE EMOTIONS ON VARDAN.."DO THIS FOR ME"
Missgoldie Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 What about all the JODY records, the term was coined to describe civilian men who stole soldiers women who were serving in the vietnam war. Ofcause i've gone blank except the obvious, Ann Sexton. I'll get back with more after my morning coffee
