I don't knows if is a matter of "Eclectical taste"; simply, from my teens on, I likes black music in the whole sense (specially soul vocal groups) but some of my first acquisitions were Temptations, O'Jays, Dramatics and some "fusion" stuff: I purchased Corea's "Return To Forever" and Ramsey Lewi's "Solar Wind" when I was aged 15 years - old. And I don't mention classical music and some experimental and symphonic rock ones favorites of mine (Mike Oldfield, Vagelis, Pink Floyd, Focus, Tys Van Leer, spanish flute and bagpipe player Carlos Núñez, classic jazz, latin jazz,...). About Osibisa, allways have seen this group tagged as an "afro-rock" band but also included in some FUNK 70's Compilation! (??). The track "Survival" on the LP mentioned impressed me highly from the first time. I forget to mention: "We're Still Together" by O.V. Wright, "Magic Journey" by Salsoul Orchestra, "Don't It Feel Good" by Ramsey Lewis,... (those stuff only by the 70's!, before some things i likes a lot from the 80's and 90's as Guru, US 3, Incognito, some Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith stuff from the 80's or the 1987 O'Jays last PIR LP "Let Me Touch You",...)

My "philosophy" about music I think is simply to hear music that got Feeling or in spanish, "música con DUENDE" (as says the flamenco musicians). The common denominator between Tys Van Leer, Marvin Gaye, Maurice Ravel, Eddie Palmieri, Vangelis, Herbie Hancock, Miracles and Camarón de la Isla is the fact they can made cry or make feel mellow or communicate an universal feeling despite the fact the music can be instrumental (whitout lyrics) or the fact that you don't understand the idiom.
Mickey Finn Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 So many great albums listed so far, will try not to duplicate those, but seeing Lou Courtney's several times reminds me of another great Jerry Ragovoy production: Dionne Warwicke - "Then came you" Also, Bobby Womack, "Roads of life" David Ruffin, "In my stride" Roy Ayers, "No stranger to love" (among many others) Barry White, "Is this whatcha wont?" (among many others, featuring the amazing "Your love - so good I can taste it") Leon Ware, "Musical massage" (agree with earlier comment about this guy being up there with the very best) Al Jarreau, "All fly home" Chic, "C'est Chic" Sister Sledge, "We are family" (both of these Chic productions proper albums that just happened to have great hit singles) Choice Four, self-titled and "On top of clear" The Dells, "Freedom means..." (among many others) Earth Wind and Fire, "I am" (among many others) Dee Dee Sharp, "What color is love" The Crusaders, "Free as the wind" (among many others) William Bell, "Relating" Bill Withers, "Menagerie" The Impressions, "First impressions" Lou Rawls, "Let me be good to you" (among many others) 1

Your mention of Al Jarreau made me to see that I'm wrong on the Blue Magic, Major Harris & Margie Joseph 2 x LP title (the correct title is "Live! Musical Extravaganza at The latin Casino") that i've confused with one of my all time favorite fusion album "CASINO LIGHTS, Live in Montreaux" that features Al Jarreau in duet with Randy Crawfors, ex - Soul Survivors keyboardist Neil Larsen with Buzz Feiten, Mike Mainieri, Larry Carlton, David Sanborn, Yellow Jackets... a big musical treasure!!P.D.: I see another wrong LP title on my list, "Main Ingredients" by Richard Tee is really titled "NATURAL ingredients" (I have the Main Ingredient, Cuba Gooding's vocal group on mind!)

Pete Hi, Pete I worked all my student years along as a barman, the last 6 years in a discotheque where this Dimples LP was played a lot (the little things interesting from a point of wiew of a soul lover they, the DJ's played, apart from stupid and "brain - less" disco and euro - disco are Trammp's "Mixin' It Up" LP, CJ & Co. Skyy, Dimples, Leon Haywood, Gene Chandler, GQ., Joe Bataan "Mestizo" whole album,... and some "ambient" music at the first half - one hour, smooth jazz as George Benson, Crusader's "Street life" - the whole album!-,...). This was between 1980 - 1986. I lives in Valls (Tarragona) but have studied and working in Barcelona where there's a lot of music vynil stores and second - hand vynil stores. One of these stores was the "Raf Import" in Avinguda de Roma where, during the career and before, in the high school days, when I traveled to Barcelona for only a day, I purchased many import LP's do not published here in Spain as "Dee Dee" by Dee Dee Sharp (1980) or "Here To Create Music" by Leon Huff or "Dramatic Way" by The Dramatics.

Tim Richmond Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 'changed my direction in soul music', what a thought provoking angle........... the albums that did it for me, are the two Jerry Williams produced Doris Duke albums, along with his stunning 'In Between Tears' - Irma Thomas. Also, Bobby Bland's 'California Album' and Sam Dees "The Show Must Go On. Have 'run in tandem' with uptempo stuff AND classy albums ever since!! Tim. 2

Thanks Josep - eclectic is how I like it and it's part of the fun of attending weekenders or events where different styles are represented. Those albums I listed were mostly those that I had found second hand cheaply in the relatively small soul sections of record shops that were otherwise stuffed full of the usual suspect stuff. Found some real gems blind at silly prices and worked on the basis of following the producers, musicians and writers on the albums as a guide to the sort of quality that could be expected. That Al Jarreau LP is particularly special for me - he did other great ones (esp his Warner Bros debut "We got by") but "All fly home" feels like such a complete album. It features Freddie Hubbard on a few tracks and has a quite haunting version of "Dock of the bay" to close. The Casino Lights LP deserves some kind of reissue or revival - surprising how relatively little known or played it is. There are various others I could add to this list once I have a look through the collection but these came quickly to mind, along with many of the others previously listed. Northern is relatively new to me and it's like having yet another dimension open up (and swallow lots of cash ... but it has to be done!). Not such an album sport, however, apart from the great releases from Kent especially. 2

21 Again Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 The Love Committee. Law And Order. Cheaters, Put in The Back of your Mind, Tierd of Being the Fool, all great dancers but so soulful. Picked this up for a pound at a market stall in Edinburgh only because Mr Searling was using the name as a cover up (think for Will Collins). Great bargain. 2
Mickey Finn Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 Have to add Melba Moore, "A Portrait of Melba", produced by McFadden & Whitehead with the full Philly ensemble. As well as "Standing right there", a beautiful version of Santana's "You are my river", "Promised land", "Is this the end", "Living free"... class from start to finish. Originally picked up on a bargain bin cassette, which got worn out just in time for the cd reissue a few years back. Another bargain bin staple for many years was George Benson's "Living inside your love" - there's some terrific instrumentals on that as well as his peerless version of Skip Scarborough's "Love ballad", "Hey girl" and "Welcome into my world". For a double LP its quality level stayed very high.

Great vocal group, they started as The Ethics and were fronted with the great falsetto voice Ron Tyson (also writer, producer and session vocalist), after with The Temptations. I discovered it so later in a double CD, "Salsoul Essentials, II" edited by Charly Records that includes the gem "Just As Long As I've Got You" and more recently I acquired the 10 CD's pack "PIR 40th Aniversary" that includes some tracks from their years on the Golden Fleece PIR subsidiary.

Right at the end . . . . . "I think we got the feel." I should think they b****y well did! lol! Around 1975 I was in a house share and a housemate turned up with this LP. We played it to death. Since then had my own vinyl and CD copies and just never tired of it. I doubt you would ever see Jerry Lawson's name on a list of top soul vocalists. But it deserves to be.

I purchased the CD compilation "The Best of Michael Henderson feat. Jean Carn & Phyllis Hyman" (The Buddah Collection, Sequel Records, 1990) and, honestly from the 15 tracks the only ones that I found feeling are this title and the one in duet with Jean, "Valentine Love". I knows he is a great bass player (fantastic on "Drama V" with The Dramatics) and a great songwriter (he did the original version, as writer and artist of "Be My Girl" before that The Dramatics one, much more successful). As a vocalist "In The Night Time" is one of my favorite mellow tracks!
