Great if those are your personal choices but  there'll be a tsunami of people insisting that Sam Dees' "Show Must Go On" would have to be in any such list,  from an objective and critical point of view anyway  !

Ooops, to be honest Mike, Peddlin Music would have been my first Lamont choice and possibly Finders Keepers for The Soul Children, just been upstairs to record room and for that period a top 20 can't do it justice such is the stuff you have to leave out

I might give you "Peddling" over "Black Bach", Kev, but "Friction" is probably my all time favourite album, or at least on a par with "Caught Up".

But this could easily run to a top 200, never mind a top 20.

Hope you're well Kev - might need another CD swap soon.

Tough call on the Soul Children Mike, "Midnight Sunshine" versus "Whats Happening Baby" to be honest, its a toss up of the coin, I can't live without either, CD swap, you bet

Everything mentioned above is a sheer delight. One LP I would like to recommend for those that have not spun it for a while, or have not checked it out is Benny Johnsons ' 'Visions of paradise'. For an album to come from nowhere, with little production pedigree, it really is a pleasure to play all the way through. Top class musicianship. Possibly a bit deep and moody for some, but that's my bag.

some great selections. Some usual suspects, but equally some very personal choices. A big yes to Sam Dees, Marvin's Whats going on, Alice Clark, Bobby Womack, Sandra Wright- superb voice. Dells Mighty MightyDells . I would add Dells V Dramatics LP, Paul Kelly- Hooked Hogtied, Jeferee Mr Fix it, RB Hudmon- Closer to you, Terry Calier- Fire on Ice, Chuck Cissell- Just for You, Major Harris- My Way, and Ashford & Simpson most  albums, but Gimme something Real my favourite, the extended I'd know you Anywhere, with Nick Ashford's silky spoken/ softly sung intro is just sublime, absolute quality.. Senior moment must write down lists. Forgot show love for Bobby Wilson and add Greg Perry One for the Road, and one of the best imo. Lou courtney  I'm in need of Love  KTF..

yep , love the Ashford  and simpson - anywhere should be played out a lot more.

Aretha made a string of great albums in the 70's - Spirit in the dark and Young, gifted and black are superb.

Most of Womack's 70's output is top class.

Latimore's first 4 albums are very high quality.

What about the Temptations 70's output? All directions is a standout.

Staple Singers Be what you are and City in the sky are terrific.

Others worth consideration - Don Covay Super dude, Johnnie Taylor Tailored in silk, James Brown The Payback, Maze's first 2 albums, Wilson Pickett Pickett in the pocket, Margie Jospeh Makes a new impression, Donny Hathaway Extensions of a man, Bobby Bland Dreamer, Al Green Living for you, Tower of Power Back to Oakland, Curtis Mayfield Never say you cant survive, DJ Rogers Love life and music, Isley Bros 3+3, Candi Staton Self titled and Stand by your man.....and many more.

It's when you think back to this time that you realise what a glorious treasure trove of music was left for us. We were spoilt by the quantity and quality.

I'm also saying yes to Aretha, Sandra Wright, and Candi Staton and I'm raising with a whole heap of Stang product...Linda Jones, Whatnauts, Moments, and the rarer ones.

I would say that the 70's was possibly one of the best eras for albums, where artists were given licence to experiment rather than just a collection of singles. Love some of the choices above especially Anthony White, Lamont Dozier, Marvin Gaye.

Here are some of my faves

Originals - California Sunset

Charles Drain - Dependable

Ramsey Lewis - Tequilla Mockingbird

EWF - That's the way of the world

Emotions - Flowers

Rufus - Rufusized

Bobby Womack - Safety Zone

Joe Simon - Drowning in a sea of love

Holland Dozier - Love & Beauty

Eloise Laws - Ain't it good

Danny Woods - Aries

Teddy Pendergrass - Same

Thelma Houston - Same

Thelma Jones - Same

Revelation - Same

Dionne Warwick - Just being myself

Voices of East Harlem - Same

Gloria Barnes - Uptown

Reflections - Love on delivery

Ohio Players - Honey

DeeDee Sharp - Happy bout the whole thing

Enough already
