i used to practice in me bedroom - also - used to get the odd mate or two round - and we'd practice together - (actually that sounds really gay...it wasn't LOL!! - i mean what could possibly be misconstrued about practising swallow dives and backflips in yer bedroom with yer mates? ffs.....anyway...)

back to the topic in hand - i used to practice me dancing in me bedroom, sometimes, literally, on the street with me mates, and a few times, a girlfriend of one of our lads, her parents had a hotel with a function room and they'd let us use the PA and dancefloor!! reminds me of some extremely funny moments watching fat ****** (name removed to protect the portly) practising his swallow dives. man those were the days LOL!!

did you practice dancing? or did you walk into yer first nighter knowing exactly what to do? i'm actually laughing right know remembering it all...

I just watched the good dancers and try to find my own style based around that and also watched the not so good dancers and hoped i never danced like them, ive never watched myself dance but i like to think im somewhere inbetween,

Nottingham Palais,remember goin,dunno how old I was,seein this geezer dance I thought he was brill.I remember thinking I am going to do that...so I did,I learned a bit at a time till I ended up a pretty good dancer..won a few competitions in my time,never practiced , just got on with it in the clubs

I started Latin lessons then gave up - my daugher does Latin so you'll see a few of her moves to some boogaloo at Prestatyn

I think I was lucky in the fact that I used to find it easy to learn ,no matter what the style was,these days I have had to learn again, cos the way I used to dance is just too much for me ..( I always put everything I have into it )...more of a mid tempo shuffler now , it used to upset me because I could'nt do what I used to ,but I have got used to that now ,learned to love it all again...Im 51 now so ..................

Like many, 1973 at a youth club, watched this guy dancing and just thought wow. Had already done the liking motown, so I suppose northern was a natural progression. Used to practice at home, but generally in the front room, which led to me getting smacked round the head regularly by my Mum, for breaking her knick knacks whilst doing handstands. Also got a clump when spinning, managed to get from the front room to the kitchen (they were adjoining) but came to a halt after bumping into her. Steak and kidney pie all over the floor, swiftly followed by me all over the floor clearing it up, but not before she'd given me a thick ear. Yeah they were fun days

Anyway gettin back to topic

Must say the same as Bazza (altho we never met there ) hes older than me!!

I went to notts palais and was blown away by the good dancers and the sounds

Learned a bit at the youthy but mainly was addicted once I saw what they were doing in the clubs

But as most say nick bits from other dancers and make them my own

But I love to dance to most music (RnR jiving did this with dad )loved to jive!!

Never had lessons when I was a kid tho which I desparately wanted

was in love with gene kelly / fred astair etc etc

Would say Im fair to middling at dancing ..I just enjoy it!

i just got up at a local mod/ska/soul event back in 1991. it was a mid-week affair called 'dance craze' at the old Kikis nightclub in Sheffield. i just got on with it to be honest. still rubbish now

Pikeys Dog will remember this i used to see him there walking round the venue with a box of 45s. i would wonder why he did it to be honest but all this became prevalent later in life

Started my dancing in the Beachcomber (under the Casino) and at the Monaco Ballroom (Hindley), mostly to Motown. Then, everyone used to dance in a circle.

Then one night we had the pleasure of watching 2 fantastic dancers on the tiny Beachcomber stage, one was a guy from Wigan by the name of Tony Burns, the other was someone by the name of Booper.

They unleashed a phenomenon onto us all.

I'd never seen anything like it in my life.

Gotta say though, most of my dancing styles came from the Jazz Funk scene, it was kind of a mix with Northern.

I've never ever practiced anywhere except one might say, on the dancefloor itself.

She used to go Clifton Hall regular,and Wigan obviously,i knew her from about 78 onwards,she bit of a fukcer with the drugs then,we all was allright then,most of us

By the sounds of this thread its was pretty much just the men that used to practice in there bedroom on there own

Though I suppose if I were going to attempt a gymnastic display whilst fully dressed I'd want to practice first - just so that I didn't look a complete tw*t in front of everyone

Was lucky enough (when I lived with the parents) to have a polished, parquet floor in the record room - so when I did have a dance at home I was able to dance properly. Whenever I bought a new pair of shoes, I'd whip em on, stick on a tune and make sure I could dance in em before they graced the next allnighter. Does that count as practicing ?

I dont remember Janice from Wigan but I remember a girl from Wigan called Janet Powell who was a brilliant dancer as well as very lovely to boot.

I have my elder mod sister to thank for that. she was into all the usual suspects. when chris farlowe's out of time went big, she had me & my brother doing the steps in the 'back room'. she went a bit strange later & had us frugging to canned heat's let's work together, which ain't that different to wilbert harrison's original I guess, just a bit squallier, swampier or whatever. the northern stuff came at the age of 14 at the local tuesday night disco at the wirrina peterborough, to things like there's a ghost in my house & the joker. I remember it being a unnerving experience, especially when you had people like paul donnelly & the then extremely agile gary spencer in front of you. gary was quite brilliant, as was bill bingham, who just used to spend the night perfecting his spins. makes me smile now...

must be a different LLoyd Salmon as the Romiley Lloyd was younger than me and a crap dancer

Early Saturday evenings there was a teens disco at Victor Sylvester's dance club in Worcester - known to all as Vics.

Resident DJ there was Mark "Polo" Baulch. He'd spin all the Wheel hits like Richard Temple, Billy Butler, Mitch Ryder etc.

I'll never forget hearing him play the Millionaires Never for me - yonks ahead of it's time.

I learned my moves there watching some of the older kids. It was a year or so till I looked old enough to travel up north and get into niters.

i think its not good to learn dance moves. Just hear the musik , feel it and let your body move.Go out and dance.

I just can tell you my experiences from germany ,but i dont " like " people that learn 3 or 4 dancing moves ,go to a party and you can see that its a learned move..

That depends on missunderstanding of Soul . just my opinion .

Talkin of dancers, we thought we were in for a treat on Friday nite at Stockport Guild Hall when in strolled a guy in very baggy black trouser things tied around his waist and over a normal pair of what looked like white chinos or something. These pants looked akin to part of a ju-jitsu or kendo style warrior get-up. These were complimented by a white vest, many gold thoings around his neck and a very long black bandana! Having done all that martial art stuff in the past we all thought this guy is gonna do the business - not a jot! Very, very disappointing to say the least - one of the worst dancers in the place infact.....did turn a few heads though. Thankfully he did go and change before he went home and didnt walk the streets dressed like that .

Oh and that mod fella was there too - the strange one that looks like this emoticon

To be honest can't remember a time in my life when I haven't danced - though remember going to the teeny bop in my village then advancing to the teenage version when I was 10 ( my mates dad ran it so I was aloud though not old enough ). Dancing to stuff like The kid then by time I was old enough to go officially I 'd moved onto Nancy Wilson etc. Dancing came natural - always used my body to express my passion for the music

Though god only knows what I look like but I don't care, when I get on that dance floor I just enjoy myself
