Brilliant sets all night ,but we are used to it aren't we :)

Was a nice surprise to bump into John Phillips again ,always good craic and a top bloke he is too !

Not a full house but as i said on the night .. the right people turn up ,who appreciate the music on offer and to be honest , the balance on offer of mid tempo and uptempo dancers ,is enough to please any soul fan ,so you have to give credit to the promoters for always striving to keep to the programme of high quality and attention to the dancer !

Nuff said .. seeya all in September for another quality installment from the residents and the lovely lady dj and good friend  Pat Bleasdale ,she will not disappoint !

very nice RAFA SOUL CLUB – JULY 4th 2015 SERIOUS SHADES OF SOUL

SPECIAL GUEST DJ’S, Geoff Buckley (Clitheroe), Pete Fowler (Perth Australia), John Phillips (Gold Coast Australia).

Had to get there early as we knew the dj’s would be there bang on time to hear what was played to prevent hearing the same thing twice. Promoter Ian Shoulder kicking off the night.

IAN SHOULDER 7.15 – 8.00pm

RON HARRINGTON – IT HAPPENED TO ME  - HILLSIDE

WHISPERS – YOU CAN’T FIGHT WHAT’S RIGHT – DORE

SOLITAIRES – FOOL THAT I AM – MGM

LARRY WRIGHT – IT’S OK WITH ME – A-GO-GO

LES MACK & THE IMPACTS – SO BLUE – JOKERS 3

KELL OSBOURNE – QUICK SAND – TITANIC

LOUIS PAUL – THE CHANGE WILL DO YOU GOOD – INTRO

RAY POLLARD – WANDERLUST – DECCA

CHALFONTES – CONFESSING MY LOVE – MERCURY

LARRY ATKINS – LIGHTEN UP – HIGHLAND

THEOLA KILGORE – IT’S GONNA BE ALRIGHT – MERCURY

MAJOR HARRIS – CALL ME TOMORROW - OKEH

SUGAR & THE SPICES – HAVE FAITH – SWAN

A great start by Ian playing something different which reinforces his attitude in making people listen to great soul records that you never really hear anywhere else.  Pete Fowler from Perth Australia (former Chorley resident) was first up as guest dj and playing a quick half hour set to get things moving along. No introductions really necessary for this imposing soul DJ – here’s what happened.

PETE FOWLER – 8.00 – 8.30pm

PERIGENTS – LOVE ON A RAMPAGE - MALTESE

KEITH CURTISS – I GOT TO KEEP YOU BABY – SMOKE

WADE FLEMONS – JEANETTE – RAMSEL

ERNEST MOSELY - STUBBORN HEART – LA-CINDY

Peter and wife Maxine were the second couple in the place after Geoff and Margaret and we kept them busy from the start. First guest dj spot went to Peter and he started and finished as he meant to go on with classics from Buster and Eddie and Ernest Mosely with hard edged soul in between – more from him later.

Geoff Buckley from Clitheroe  was our main guest DJ and he arrived mega early with wife Margaret as Ian was playing the 4th record of his set and Geoff explained he wanted to hear everything that got played so that no repetitions took place. A nicer couple you could not wish to meet anywhere, great people, mega soul fans and a hidden DJ (for the North East) for sure.

GEOFF BUCKLEY – 8.30 – 9.00pm

TERRY SINCLAIR – WHAT HAVE YOU HEARD – D.P.G.

BARRINO BROTHERS – JUST A MISTAKE – T.C.B.

SAM FLETCHER – I’D THINK IT OVER TWICE – TOLLIE

HARRY STARR – ANOTHER TIME ANOTHER PLACE – END

EDITH BROWN – YOU THINK LOVE IS SOMETHING TO PLAY WITH – 4 BROTHERS

GIL BLANDING - RULES – READY

Fantastic early set from Geoff and introducing 4 records from the night’s free cd which he compiled. We were at Bridlington last week (27th June) and by chance I met up with John Phillips from Australia and reminisced about him dj’ing at The Cumby Soul nights (a previous venture of ours) about 10 / 11 years ago and mentioned that we were running the RAFA CLUB soul nights – “I’ve heard about that place and watched the play lists – might come up for a listen”. Never mind come for a listen – bring a play box and get on the decks I said. This is what happened……….

JOHN PHILLIPS – 9.00 – 10.00pm

DELRAYS INCORPORATED - DESTINATION UNKNOWN – TAMPTE

NU-RONS - ALL OF MY LIFE – NU-RON

PEE WEE SHUCK AND HUEY – BESIDE MYSELF – FLAGG

RUFUS WOOD – BEFORE 2001 – ESPANOLA

IMPERIAL C’s – SOMEBODY TELL HER – PHIL-LA

MATT LUCAS – YOU BETTER GO GO – KAREN

JOKERS – SOUL SOUND – SKO-FIELD

PAPA BEAR AND THE CUBS – YOU’RE SO FINE – SMS

BILLY BYRD – LOST – SCREAM (RAFA CLUB FAVE)

FLASH McKinley – I’LL RESCUE YOU - BOMBAY

CODY BLACK – IT’S OUR TIME - GIG

ARIN DEMAIN – SLIENT TREATMENT – BLUE STAR

NADINE BROWN – LEAVE ME ALONE – PERFECTION

IKE & TINA TURNER – SUCH A FOOL FOR YOU – LONDON (FRENCH ONLY)

JADES - LUCKY FELLOW – MODE

MILTON WRIGHT - LIKE A ROLLING STONE  - SATIRON

JOE MATTHEWS – YOU BETTER CHECK YOURSELF – KOOL KAT

DORONDO PULLIMAN – HOW I GOT OVER – OCAMPO (Getting funky John))

ALEX AND THE SOUL MESSENGERS – SAY HELLO TO GUYANA – ALEX (What a sound – played for Nev Griffiths)

MILTON PARKER - WOMEN LIKE IT HARDER – CLOSET (best copy I’ve ever seen)

SALT AND PEPPER – A MAN OF MY WORD – HEATWAVE

JAMES LATELY – LOVE FRIENDS AND MONEY – TEMPLE

Well, from a chance encounter we got a visit from one of the world’s top soul collectors and a dj spot to rival them all – fantastic seeing John make the journey to our small club and meeting old friends too. Next time you’re in the UK John – 1st Saturday of the month come to the Rafa Club and bring that box of records to play – anytime. Thank you.

Back to the main guest dj and Geoff Buckley with his box of tricks / 45’s.

GEOFF BUCKLEY 10.00 – 100.45pm

TOBY LARK – LOT’S OF HEART – U.S.D.

JIMMY SCOTT – NOBODY BUT YOU - GIANT

TEMPOS – I’LL NEVER FORGET – I’LL NEVER FORGET

NELSON SANDERS – MOJO MAN – RAMBLER

EDITH BROWN – YOU DID IT – 4 BROTHERS

BROWN BOMBERS – WAIT FOR ME – AMAZING

CODY BLACK – SLOWLY MOULDING - KING

JACKEY BEAVERS – I NEED MY BABY - REVILOT

BEE JAYS – I’LL FIND YOU - PRIME

VOLUMES – AIN’T GONNA GIVE YOU UP – KAREN

A big bucks set from Geoff, I know I requested Mojo man and was out of the room when it got played (sorry Geoff), will try better next time. What more can we say about Geoff – he and his missus Margaret are the quintessential rare soul fans that grace our doors each month with their presence. Thank you for your support Geoff and for the 2 sets you did plus the free cd listing which was most of Geoff’s 2 sets plus a bit more…. Just book the guy.

Final set from Pete Fowler and he’s got the bit between his teeth – GO Go Go…..

PETER FOWLER  10.45 – 11.30pm

PRIMERS - HOW DOES IT GRAB YOU – HALE (big allnighter monster for the firat time at the Rafa Club)

LILLIE BRYANT - MEET ME HALF WAY - TAY-STER DEMO (mega Northern Soul)

CAVALIERS - WITHOUT SOMEONE TO TELL ME – UNISSUED

JIMMY BURNS - I REALLY LOVE YOU – ERICA

DON GARDNER - CHEATIN KIND - SEDGRICK

CANDI STATON - NOW YOU'VE GOT THE UPPER HAND – UNITY (how good does this sound now!)

BILLY ARNELL & THE SPARKLES - TOUGH GIRL - HOLLY

JIMMY THOMAS - THE BEAUTIFUL NIGHT - UK PARLOPHONE DEMO

Some BIG GUNS from Peter in his last set for sure. So with the Clitheroe and Chorley blokes plus Johnny from Donnie filling in most of the gaps of the mid-summer soul night it was almost all over which just left the Promoters finishing off the night and Paul Ackley had to return home early so he left his box with your’s truly and this is what I found inside…..

JIMMY BO HORNE – JUST CAN’T SPEAK – DADE (if you don’t dance to this then go home and put your head in the microwave- 5 minutes full power)

ROBERT TANNER - SWEET MEMORIES – MEGATONE (ultimate 2 stepper)

SHELDON TURNER – COME BACK ASSOCIATED ACETATE (one off from fantastic Puzzles lead singer)

DAVID THOMAS – I’LL ALWAYS NEED YOU – PRIME (the ender at Rafa Club, but one more squeezed in)

ANTONIO CASTRO – W.E.L.F.A.R.E. – UNIVERSAL INT’ RECORDS (got to play this more, so atmospheric)

Another soul night been and gone and we keep plodding on trying to bring you the best Northern Soul in the UK. If you haven’t been to the club – give it a try, I’ll guarantee you’ll not be disappointed. Special thanks go to Geoff Buckley (and Margaret) for everything they do for us and to the OZ Connection – Pete Fowler  (and Maxine) plus an impromptu appearance from John Phillips for delivering a spectacular soul sizzler at The Rafa club.

Next month is the summer sabbatical so there will be no soul night in August; next one is 5th September with very special guest Pat Bleasdale.

See you then folks…

Regards Paul.
