Popular Post Ernie Andrews Posted May 28, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 28, 2015 I got involved in an interesting thread on Facebook. Apparantly you can play what you want in any format as it has nothing to do with DJ credibility anymore. Think its on Rare soul talk- facebook page - Have a look. You will see my comments under my real name Steve Eckersley. It backs up my view the rare soul scene is Phooked as afar as Im concerned because people have selective principles meaning they select them when it suits! Or visa versa drop them when it suits! 8
Guest Matt Male Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 (edited) What with the Morris Dancers vs. Northern dancers, dance lessons on Youtube, the Comedy Carpet and everything else, I'm long past caring about what goes on outside of the places I want to go. It's a different planet as far as I'm concerned, and about as inaccessible for me as well. Carry on. Edited May 28, 2015 by Matt Male
Popular Post Soulfinger Posted May 28, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 28, 2015 I wouldn't go anywhere near it but I think it's a good thing more young people are listening to quality soul music and if this encourages some of them to progress to coming to nights where they can hear the real thing on the original format then that's great. We have to be realistic, we're a bit dinosaur like in the eyes of some young uns. I'd much prefer kids to get into the music this way than not at all. 4
Mark S Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Guy round my way plays of MP3 and CDs " Let us know what you want me to play and I,ll download it for you " needless to say .................................. Thankfully there are still some DJs locally that still do things the right way

Popular Post Grayman45 Posted May 28, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 28, 2015 I think if young people are to get into Northern Soul, all formats will be used. What young person could build up a collection of classic vinyl from nothing now? Just my humble opinion. 4

Jnixon Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 the last thing the music world needs is shittily made mp3 files being thrown out of piss poor speakers.
Popular Post Amsterdam Russ Posted May 29, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 29, 2015 (edited) From the article: “I see myself firmly as part of the new generation of Northern Soul lovers,” says Ben, That's what matters most. After all, it is about the music, isn't it? Put another way, is it the stupidly priced and inaccessible bits of vinyl, owned by a select few, that's most important - or is it the musical legacy? I say it's about the music… Edited May 29, 2015 by Russell Gilbert 11
Popular Post Benji Posted May 29, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 29, 2015 I'd rather have someone playing first-rate Northern off a CD or mp3 than someone playing second or third rate Northern off original vinyl. Seems many care more about the music's format than the quality. 7

Popular Post dean jj Posted May 29, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 29, 2015 The 'glamour' of rare soul, and indeed other forms of black dance music, is that the person who doesn't invest time, effort, instinct, and I'm afraid these days more than ever, hard cash, doesn't get to display it. Of course then they have to have to have some presentation skills as well: which isn't always the case. Why would anybody travel miles on a dark rainy night, in a dodgy rented vehicle that smells of fish, to a tawdry venue, to hear music on a disapointing sound system, if Norris from next door can own the bloody music by typing? dean 4
Westender Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I've never understood the disdain some people have towards digital formats. We all know that vinyl played over a good sound system is the best way to listen to music, but cd and mp3 have their place and can happily co exist with vinyl. It really is all down to the music. I'd rather hear a digital version of a great track, than not hear any version at all as the rare vinyl wasn't available. 1

Jnixon Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Some mp3's are better quality than some vinyl though relating to this situation id say its very unlikely they will sit for an hour or two mastering each individual file if they are taking this kind of shortcut to start with.

Jnixon Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Probably not but you never know one thing i do know is that my tinnitus sodden ear brain combo will decode one bar of music from a poor mp3 file then walk me straight back out through the door. may as well use Sonos or some similar arrangement and not pay a DJ at all.
Popular Post Chalky Posted May 29, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 29, 2015 (edited) one thing i do know is that my tinnitus sodden ear brain combo will decode one bar of music from a poor mp3 file then walk me straight back out through the door. may as well use Sonos or some similar arrangement and not pay a DJ at all. But by the same token I've heard some sorry excuses for vinyl in my time, an mp3 would definately have been an improvemnt at times. as for not payin a DJ at all, do mnay get paid....I thought it was a you scratch my back.......I'll scratch yours. Sonos would be an improvement at times to with the lack of imagination at many venues as for this event and events like it, they were bound to happen, have happened in the past. Many kids have only grown up with digital formats and the cost of vinyl can be off putting for some. The only saving grace is some might progress from digital events and get the bug and take up vinyl and events that keep it real. If they don't then it will die out with us old farts. Glynthornhill Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Amusing to see a few bars / pubs in our vicinity now advertising that they have turntables / play ' real vinyl ' ...Oh FFS we never left it - maybe the novelty of the laptop DJ is on the wane. Vinyl the new trendy ' must have ' for wannabees..... A vinyl record is a handwritten letter A digital download is a text message

As I said at the beginning of the thread I wasn't really intending to comment on the actual event - rather what the two geezers had to say etc. And to see if anyone knew them - just out of interest. I live in Nottingham so it may have been of more interest to me but the thread has generated some discussion. 1

Ergo chancey w@nkers. Exactly. just some more chancers running just another scam. The reason they're not concerned about format isn't some noble crusade to 'get the music to the people', or some anti-materialist stance. Been hearing that same shit for years, all off people who simply want to make money off boots or be trendy djs but don't want to commit any expenditure or effort. Simple as that. There's about 1,000 dos on every weekend in the uk, and that's the ones playing proper records. It's almost too easy nowadays to buy a collection of classic originals - as proved by the fact so many have done it - so really, how easy do these want it. There simply is not any scenario left in the world that requires more DJs, let alone ones with zero record collecting experience and therefore zero knowledge. At best, they will offer a similarly predictable and stagnant output to the wedding dj type 11

Mak Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I know Paul Dallison and I've met Jim Walters , both will be playing OVO in th e70's, x/over room , Paul was a guest on Chris Andertons Dab-of-Soul radio show a fortnight ago . As for the others , well just like a lot of the band-wagon jumpers , they will play anything just to make a name for themselves . It happens all over the East Midlands . We have even got All-nighters playing club classics under the banner of rare soul . But hey-oh , I have gave up on the Northern scene . It's worse now than it was when I packed up in 74 .Thank god for the more progressive soul front . 1

Widnes63 Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Mp3s and Cds are ok for playing in your car, if it was acceptable to play them out then all of us could be djs, I personally don't have a record collection and have respect for most djs who have spent a lifetime collecting vinyl, they have earned the right, I don't believe the excuse that its a good way to get young blood into "the scene", there is a group of young people in wigan that play OV in their own club, i'm sure that if other youngsters where that interested then they could do the same. 1
Popular Post Mtay9778 Posted May 29, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 29, 2015 There are plenty of us young uns buying original vinyl. As per the £25 and under sets threads etc there are loads of top quality records that are affordable, they don't have to be stupidly expensive and I don't think it's expected considering how young some of the younger DJs are. Over time you build on your collection, sell a few bits to then fund other wants. It's traditionally an ovo scene. And not to mention how lazy and easy it is to play a few mp3s off your laptop, no thought and imagination in my opinion 8
Mtay9778 Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 It does worry me when I see some of the views and comments on Facebook regarding format. Each to their own I know but you can't even explain about ovo, they really couldn't care less! 3
