A friend told me that Robert Elms 'tackled' Northern Soul on his 'whats all the fuss about' on his Friday afternoon radio show.

I know I can listen on thier website, but just wondered if anyone else had heard the show and what you thought?

Didn't hear the show, but mercifully 'Dutch' Elms was on holiday that week and Sean Rowley was sitting in. Not that he knows anymore about NS than Dutch, mind you....

I've had a look on there but couldn't find it, probably for the best as it's bound to be cr*p!

I did look at his playlists though & saw he'd played Huang (sic) Chung & Sally Mclennan (sic) by the Pogues, just about sums it up. :D

I really detest these celebrities who jump on the bandwagon of whatever trendy scene is in vogue at the time & pretend to be all clued up when it's clear for all to see they haven't got a clue, it really is embarassing!

I dunno, Rob Elms who is actually an original 70s southern soul boy himself, has always been quite positive about the Northern scene, giving respect to it when most of the media at one time moved onto the Next Big Trend,I still got a copy of the Face Mag, from '82 when he was the editor which featured an article on Northern and contained a pix of our Vernon from Bradford looking rather dapper on the dancefloor,Delxx

Simon,

Huang Chung is what Huang Chung were called before they were called Wang Chung. But after they were called Scabby Harry - or was that Intellektuals? Bet this post gets a few on here scratching their heads :D

Huang/Wang Chung were a bunch of Quernts anyway but it makes a change from the oldies debate.

...Let me state, quite categorically and for the benefit of anyone who thinks otherwise, that Robert Elms has always hated Northern Soul and has always taken a patronisiing attiude to the scene. I don't pretend to know him, but I know people who do know him and who have confirmed that to me in no uncertain terms.

He was not an 'Original 70s Southern Soul Boy' either - believe me when I say that, prior to the rise of the 'New Romantic' scene - which I do have to give him credit for inventing, if 'credit' is the right word - he was nowhere to be seen at any Southern-based dances of any kind, despite anything he might claim to the contrary.

He is, unfortunately, just another media type who has somehow managed to convince the BBC - and anyone else who uses him as a 'talking head'-type authority on, seemingly, everything - that he is a font of all knowledge, when really he's anything but.

Don't let's start giving him credit where credit has never been due, please.

I haven't checked the show out - but I always found his dinner-time slots quite informative when I used to listen whilst working down that way a few years back.

However, I definetly bumped into him at the Lacy Lady back in the 70s - a mate of mine was seeing a lass from that way (who was related to one of the DJ's and Elms came talking to the said bloke one time). Tripped over him at one of the Purley all-dayers - Elms did nod hello and we passed a few pleasantries. So I'd say he was definitely around the 'scene'. As for being a regular, I wasn't so I can't say whether he was.

Blimey! you learn something new everyday anyway i do know the Pogues never made a record called Sally Mclennnan!

These clueless talking heads seem to be on the rise, i personally think they should have to take a lie detector test before they go anywhere near a radio or a TV set!

Yes, but that was a totally different scene.

A scene that many of us on here spent most of our time trying to avoid.

I thought they did...

They did Pete but not spelt like that!

The point i was trying to make is the general slackness of these talking heads trying to pretend they know what they're talking about, maybe i was being slightly too picky!
