Alright, for me it's a toss up between any of the holy trinity, in no particular order

Teddy Pendergrass, David Ruffin or Marvin Gaye?

Comments, insults, alternatives?

BTW if anyone asks, tell 'em that this was a wind up and you really meant to say Marvin Junior, Otis Redding and O.V. Wright, in no particular order...

Remember having this conversation with about 10 people at on of Richard Searling's alldayers in 86. Then it was between Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross. Result a draw!!!!!!!!

Agree that these 3 were very special... however, a few decent alternatives... in no particular order!

  1. Johnnie Taylor
  2. Bobby Womack
  3. James Carr
  4. Bobby McClure
  5. Willie Hutch
  6. Lenny Williams
  7. Freddie Hughes
  8. Bobby Bland
  9. Donny Hathaway

Many worthy nominations but ... I've said it before, and I'll say it again, DAVID RUFFIN was the absolute greatest by a mile !

Both as a VOCALIST and PERFORMER !

As a vocalist he could tackle literally ANY style of music (soul funk r'n'b country etc) , and he could croon and do show tunes too like Jackie Wilson ...

As a performer he was as agile and athletic as James Brown and Joe Tex , and he had all the moves with the Temps. Just look at some of the videos on this site with Ruffin in them !

Marvin , great as he was , wasn't much of a dancer and by his own admission felt uncomfortable doing gritty RnB as on his earliest hits. As we all know Marvin wanted to be like Nat King Cole !

There were absolutely no limits to Ruffin's talent ... his only problem was that he knew it too , he had a massive ego ..... still, he was the best ! :D

Bobby Womack for me... :D

My other candidates for the list would be Herman Hitson, David Ruffin & Jessie Butler

(of ZZ & Company fame)...
