Sunnysoul Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Many worthy nominations but ... I've said it before, and I'll say it again, DAVID RUFFIN was the absolute greatest by a mile ! Both as a VOCALIST and PERFORMER ! As a vocalist he could tackle literally ANY style of music (soul funk r'n'b country etc) , and he could croon and do show tunes too like Jackie Wilson ... As a performer he was as agile and athletic as James Brown and Joe Tex , and he had all the moves with the Temps. Just look at some of the videos on this site with Ruffin in them ! Marvin , great as he was , wasn't much of a dancer and by his own admission felt uncomfortable doing gritty RnB as on his earliest hits. As we all know Marvin wanted to be like Nat King Cole ! There were absolutely no limits to Ruffin's talent ... his only problem was that he knew it too , he had a massive ego ..... still, he was the best !
Simon T Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Allright then, propper go,William(smokey)Robinson. Bit too nasal & vibrato for me, what you think?
Billy Freemantle Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 There can be only one: O.V. Wright. Sounds great even with his teeth knocked out. Other greats have to be - James Carr, Jackie Wilson, Bobby Bland, Al Greene, Roscoe Robinson, Jerry Butler, Gene Chandler. BUT O.V. WRIGHT WINS BY A MILE
Guest espo Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 My vote goes to ---O.C.Tolbert and Michael Proctor---they can sing anything and make it sound brilliant
Guest cC B Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Bobby Womack for me... My other candidates for the list would be Herman Hitson, David Ruffin & Jessie Butler (of ZZ & Company fame)... CB

Sweeney Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I'm quite partial to the superlative vocal stylings of Lee Jones from the Masqueraders.
John Al Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Tricky, agree with most people's shouts, but a mention to: Glenn Jones David Sea Little Anthony JJ Barnes
Gaz Simon Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 David Ruffin for me too........ Awesome soulful power. Untouchable!!!! Have to agree about Lee Jones of The Masqueraders as well, its a real shame he wasnt with the band over here earlier this year!
Sweeney Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Just thought of another... Garfield Fleming. I love his vocals on "Don't Send Me Away". Remarkably soulful voice.
Guest Neece Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 (edited) Think most of mine have already been mentioned but would add Frankie Beverly too. Neece Edited August 30, 2006 by Neece
