Popular Post Goldsoul Posted April 20, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 20, 2015 This may be a merger from the 'Will the real' thread.....but breaking news on Simon Soussan, the notorious, creative and often misunderstood character from the 70's. Goldsoul Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 Are you allowed to divulge information on anybody in the witness protection programme? I'll make sure he doesn't read the comment Steve. Ha!
Goldsoul Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 Is he still interested in the UK Scene Kev ??? Hard to tell. He's fairly religious and its early days. 1
Popular Post Goldsoul Posted April 20, 2015 Author Popular Post Posted April 20, 2015 Get him to sign up on here, that would be fun……. Steve- That clearly needs a lot of thought. Very few know him personally so it probably would turn into a witch hunt. On the positive side, once everybody got to know him and his character, methinks he would be well received. One thing's for sure, we are talking about a very knowledgeable individual right up there with the best of them. One snippet of news I can give you is he's still interested in vinyl. He mentioned to Ian that he's looking for a 45 on Bell by Curtis, The Brothers called When Love Goes Wrong on Bell. Anyone have it for sale? Hopefully I can cease playing messenger, but while we try and coax him into the arena I'm happy to offer snippets of interest to members. 8
Popular Post Biggordy Posted April 20, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 20, 2015 I'm far too young to know of Simon personally but have loved reading the stories about him from Frank(Ian) et al. I love characters and rogues and he seems to me that he was just that, a rogue. He didn't kill anyone, didn't rape anyone, etc. He ripped people off, yes and those he ripped off had/have a right to be angry of course but it would be great if he could tell his side of the story one day whether it be here, in a book, documentary. It won't happen on here though as people would just rip into him, same as they did with Ian Levine. Both men were important figures in the history of northern soul, love em or hate em. Don't let your hatred deny us younger ones the chance to hear/read/see the history of this great music and scene. 4

I've been reading about this guy on here...so interesting, a real character! as for that record on Bell - I've got it. Its a Demo issue only, I think. Red text and a black text issue. The flip is a hot record called "you make everything better". I think its fairly expensive now.

Mal C Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Like a couple above, I'm far too young to know anything about SS, other than what I've been told over the years...but my golly he's left a legacy... Great thread.,, Mal.c

Guest sharmo 1 Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Hi Kev be interesting to see if he has any of the old pressings left regards, Simon.
Guest SteveJohnston Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Be more interesting to see if he still has his record collection left Simon :-)) How's you brother?

'Curtis, The Brothers' has been in-demand for at least fifteen years for the crossover side: the side SS is looking for is sort of weak white folk-pop. Good to know he still has his finger on the pulse. 3
Skegsoul Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Had some great records off the man back in the day, only had my fingers burned once. Apart from that one time was always straight with me, and boy has the man had some choice choons through his hands !!! 2

Popular Post Chris L Posted April 20, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 20, 2015 The guy was/is a crook, bootlegging records, taking money and not sending records and nicking other peoples records. How anybody can paint him as some loveable rogue is beyond belief. 7
Popular Post Ady Croasdell Posted April 20, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 20, 2015 I think it's very interesting he's around and I'd be glad to hear some genuine true stories but it's going to be incredibly hard to know if anything he says will be true. Unless he's had a major character transplant, it'll be smoke and mirrors and the gospel according to how he wants to portray it that week. 18
Popular Post Zed1 Posted April 20, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 20, 2015 But is it the Real SS or has he just booted himself?.... 4

Aren't there enough DVDs, interviews, talking heads etc. about this period already? Edited April 20, 2015 by Steve G 5
Cunnie Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 The scene is as big as it's ever been with all the returnee's & new faces & guess what? One of the biggest bootleggers the scene has ever known resurfaces. Who'd have thought that eh 1

Totally agree Ady, which is why I said to Ian.....tread carefully. Simon is new to social media. The whole criticism thing might scare him to death lol

Popular Post Johnmcc Posted April 20, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 20, 2015 Hard to tell. He's fairly religious and its early days. Religion is the last refuge of a scoundrel (to paraphrase Samuel Johnson), and a pretty good earner in some parts of the world. 8
sister dawn Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I think he would be made welcome as he was a part of this scene for so long, regardless of tricks, he has a knowledge base that if he chose to share would enrich us all. 1
Godzilla Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I'd love to see him on here. I suspect he'd not last much longer than Levine than did though...

Mellorful Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I sincerely hope if SS joins the forum he is given respect, support and/or critical assessment as is the norm (without abuse). I would also like Ian Levine to make some contributions on here; their combined knowledge and experience would cast light into some of the shadows. Maybe both as Nom de plume? Just needs Kev to be very persuasive. Atb Stu 3

How anybody can paint him as some loveable rogue is beyond belief. Think the bootlegging charge is one that can be levelled at a quite a few on this scene and they're still up to their tricks 40 years on, and probably more prolific than back in the day, what with Internet. 8
Ian Dewhirst Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) I think he's better off being slightly unreachable and enigmatic personally and I have the feeling he'll be perfectly happy with that. It suits him for a number of reasons I think. It's obvious he still has his taste for Northern Soul but also lots of other stuff too. Plus he's much more up-to-date with some below the radar singers then I am for sure, so he's still listening to lots of diverse stuff. I haven't communicated with him but he's thrown a few titles around, so the old fox is still active lol. I thought he was dead or in a Jewish version of a monastery or something....... He did seem to want an MP3 of a song called "99 And A Half Wont Do" by a black girl group that I feel I should know but don't. Does that ring any bells with anyone on here (I don't think it's the Wilson Picket song....? Mind you, with a title like that, it could be another "Reaching For The Best" wind-up......... stokesoulboy Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I say well done Ian for finding him, personally for all the records he found, covered up etc I'd say he is responsible for a boat load of soul . I hope he is well and will do some sort of interview

stokesoulboy Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Ian , Alton McLain did it in 79 and they were connected to the LA music scene ! I'd say that's the one Simon was after and probably in some way linked to the group Krystal ??

Yep, it's gotta be that one as he was at Polydor in that period with Arpeggio. Will You Tube it when I get to the office and check..... Good call. The Carole Lynn Townes record was pushing it even for him lol..... Ian D
Popular Post Dayo Posted April 21, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 21, 2015 Thanks to Mr. Soussan, so many of the scene's best and most iconic records got booted so quickly that they were sometimes only played for a few weeks and then dropped. I can't think that was a good thing. We burned up a lot of great stuff so quickly. 7
