Guest Baz Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 took my first dive in the 'deep end' at Stoke 'oldies allnighter' in 2002, after visiting loads of soul nights thought it was time to do a nighter, then did differnt nighters on a irregular basis for a few years, now at one nearly every week, i love them

All us new comers at the time were looked down on by the old faithful thinking we were jumping on the band waggon (as some new comers were). Funny a lot of the then old school are no longer around I like to think I treat newbies to the scene today much better than we were treated back then. Regulars from Blackpool then included Helen Pickup, Tony Giddings, Baz Diamond, Col and Graham McGarry, their older brother Mick, Mark Ridgeway, Mick and Barbera Taylor, Dill (Richard Lang), Sharron Farrah, Sue Ingham, Glen Foster, Baz Stanton. Back in them days you could get the 12:20 from Blackpool north and it went straight through no need to change at Preston and by the time you got to the doors of the Casino you could almost walk straight in.

Guest nubes Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 Yate, 1977 with my cousin Larry, from London, the journey seemed to take forever, but the excitement i felt just to be going to a nighter was unbelievable, beige ankle length shirt, black T shirt, white ankle socks, black granny slippers, little Avon bag, black leather coat, which i paid £60.00 for, and took me 12 weeks to get, paying £5 per week to J sweet, who did ladies clothes and coats on Northampton market and had a shop just round the corner from there, when i paid the final instalment, the shop owner helped me put it on, i felt a million dollars that i had worked and got it myself,Delx

Went the Casino on and off for two months then every week from Aug, never missed one then for four years then think i missed maybe a twenty or so till it finally closed. We all used to jump the bus or try and get away with the cheapest fare from Widnes to Warrington. then call in the Patten arms opp Bank Quay Station to see who had wondered in before getting the train up to Wigan. Cant remember what tunes where played the first night i was there or for quite a few nighters after that, dont know why that is One early memory is the timeless Night Owl which many years later i managed to pick up on a red cameo issue. Guest Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 The Astoria in Leeds. I think it was about 1988 when I was 17. It was only about a 15 minute walk from my parents house, so I walked home afterwards happy as larry. I remember I slpet right through until Monday morning when I got in, I was so exhausted, I'd danced non stop. They've just pulled The Astoria down & are building flats there. Happy days. Kirstyx

After the others went swimming at the local baths, left me in car listening to sounds taped that night. Also introduced me to ways of lasting the night, never been the same since!!!,Kev.

No, I'm pretty sure it is the other Kirsty, even though I did used to go to Keele. The description kind of sounds like her . She's the same age as me, 6 months older. The other Kirsty has ginger hair, very nice long legs & a southern accent. She's not really the quiet, shy type either Plus I've never had any old men mutter mucky stuff in my ear, the other Kirsty gets all the best jobs Look forward to meeting you someday
Guest Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 Mr Donnelly - I think you mean me!!! And yes, I'm still the same I still collect/tease men as a hobby My first allnighter was the 100 club - January 1988, I was 17 and still into the whole mod thing. I can't remember if we'd been to a mod night in London first, or if we went straight there. I do know that there was 5 of us that went from Essex that night - Me, Sam and Rob Messer, Steve Coulson and Del from Pitsea (has anyone seen him in the last million years?) Can remember what I was wearing - a long tweed skirt and red turtleneck jumper, and remember being very hot and sweaty. I obviously loved it as I went to every one after that, bar about 4, right up until I moved away from Essex in June 97 Still get to nighters - but not as often as I used too
soulfulsaint Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 First nighter was The Torch in its latter days. Arrived down from Scotland - scared rigid but it was life-changing. Wigan from the start too. Always felt on edge going into the bogs to the left of the stage. Now all nighters don't seem as threatening.

Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 First all nighter was the Casino late 77, travelled all the way from Reading by train ( The joys of free rail travel !!) with Dave Barker who had been a few times. Changed trains at Crewe and was quietly amazed by the number of soulies who appeared, it seemed like the whole train was full of us. The ticket collectors at Wigan North Western just stood back and let the throng through, safety in numbers is the phrase that comes to mind walking up the road from the station. The crush to get through the door was impressive, I can still remember the heat and also the stains on my white Fred Perry polo shirt, I think it was condensation dripping off the ceiling compounded with years of smoke !! Cant remember much about the train journey back on the Sunday morning , next time we went a deal was done for a coach trip to Birmingham on the Sunday morning where I discovered the Locarno All-Dayers. Ah happy days, Dave

I went into Wigan on the last bus with my friend Diane Hughes, remember waiting in Woolworths doorway for ages, nervous about going in that first time. We were used to going to the casino as we had been going regularly for approx a year but I wasn't allowed to go to nighters! We spied our chance when my parents went on holiday for a week and not long after that we were regulars. I actually went every weekend for two years without my mum knowing (I even had a bag containing my 'secret' circular skirts that I kept at my mates house.) Our favourites were the oldies allnighters they were awesome!
Steve L Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 17 years old March or April 78 went to Coalville Tiffs on the Fri ( 12 hours ) car broke down on the M1 back to Mansfield so got home about 12 midday. After a couple of hours sleep there was a knocking on the door  Opened it to find Mart Baggaley & Bri Beastall there " come on youth, we're going to Wigan, bus for Manchester leaves at 5.40" What well there was no way I was going to let them two say they'd been to Wigan without me! Got back in Mansfield 2pm Sunday absolutely bolloxed. What a weekend and no smarties either The rest as they say is history

Guest Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 My first nighter was the Twisted Wheel, June/July 1965. Georgie Fame/Blueflames and Brian Auger Trinity were on, went to the early session first, not impressed, pop music, later saw the queue for the nighter now that was more like it, madras cotton and seersucker jackets, french cuts, airline bags, girls with crops and bobs, butterfly slingbacks, vanity cases, a line of scooters opposite, parkas, definately a switched on crowd, some dex (always my prefered choice!) off a mate and back in, what a difference better dressed (it was a mod thing!) better dancers and better music courtesy of Roger Eagle on the decks, my memory always tells me the first record I heard on entering was "In The Midnight Hour" by Picket it may sound old hat now but that night it sounded awesome and I distinctly remember hearing "Changes" Johnny Taylor for the first time and being blown away by it, still think it's a great tune, my fate was sealed that night and The Wheel and the culture that went with it, especially the music, was my life for a good few years until marriage and kids came along and I put The Wheel behind me forever but not the music I love it too much and I thank Roger Eagle and The Wheel for that. Never went to Wigan though, did I miss much Made up for it in the 90s, did nighters no end, my second coming and I bloody loved it!! Resting at the moment though
