AlanB
Was Uptight ever played out? I wasn't around on the scene back then but I'd guess that it was a mainstream Motown track rather than a Northern play? There's a few tracks like that on it, general club records from the very early days: 1-2-3, Backfield In Motion, Turn to Stone. Just trying to have broad appeal I think. Balanced out by Bobby Angelle, Luther Ingram - Weep, JJ Barnes - Go Wild. Levanna's good in the advert. And if you watch the trailer on YouTube, it's preceded by the Shredded Wheat/Bobby Angelle advert - a double feature! Link to comment Social source share

You mirror my thoughts ,I loved many of the tracks still do ,just dont want them to be thought of as this is all-nighter soul and nothing else played since matters. As for the cheesy aspect , bloody right ,extra, extra strong smelliest mousetrap, very K Tel like presentation, first saw the advert on You Tube but guessed it would also be hitting the telly,The voice over is extra cheesy among the extra, extra cheesy aspects of the video in my honest opinion. As you say the textiles industry must have invested in the video after doing a bit of bandwagon jumping however the cost of baggies may increase if the materiel required by manufacturers to make one pair of slim fit strides now requires four times the amount or more to make one pair of flapping in the wind of a Wigan gusty morning would need especially if add on the massive amount of cloth needed to provide up to fifty pocket flaps and a with over the nipples but not quite reaching the neck chest band attached, bloody helll nearly forgot the ammount of buttons such breeks use up in their construction..Well as they say in the economics of Northern Soul bandwagon jumping its all about big,big and bigger baggies anyway after some years folk will start going back to slim fit jeans and narrowish strides(trews not gait) then the market will balance out needing no regulation it will do it itself!.Hey wait a minute ,getting out of the bigger than big baggie and circle skirts after so many years, well as I look around, ahem that doesnt based on available evidence seem to work out so welll,,same as the market being left to regulate itself! Ady Croasdell
Well we've been telling people how good they were for years and now they can hear some in their cars or wherever and all join in. Mixed feelings, especially with the low price giving it away almost but there are some great tracks and not all bleeding obvious. I'd love to know who programmed Gloria Lynne in between Gene Chandler There Was A Time and Better Use Your Head-or anywhere on this CD for that matter.Listen there are literally thousands of great soul records to match these that haven't been over exposed so I don't think we need worry too much. Give it 5 years and they'll be old oldies, due for a revival! 1 Link to comment Social source share
Winnie :-)
Personally I think it's false advertising and is milking the northern scene for all the wrong reasons. I take the point it isn't aimed at us, but when this mythical youngster watches the advert, and thinks I'll have me some of that, exactly which venue is he or she going to go to, to be in amongst other young like minded souls? It's just yet another money making scheme in my view, attach some adverts to the CD that talk of Butlins dance classes, and giant trousers and a glimpse of the future is at hand. I can see a point when The Wheel, Torch, Casino, 100 club and Mecca won't even be referenced any more, and if a certain DJ/promoter (RW) lives long enough and who's already spouting that there were never any drugs at the Casino, gets his way, will be proclaiming that Butlins was the true birth of northern soul. I repeat, nothing to do with introducing youngsters, new starters to the scene IMO. 2 Link to comment Social source share
Guest Carl Dixon
I am sure all these NS releases may stimulate a few producers to be a little more creative with real instruments etc, with their productions today. I know for sure I am tempted to hire a studio and write some new material because of it. If can get committed session musicians i.e. those whose living depends on studio work, to play for me for a flat fee, I may just go ahead. The likes of Diane Shaw and Andy Birkinshaw have proved that a UK studio session has enormous credence. And then we may have something tangible from today as well as yesteryear to play around with. When we think of young back in our days and earlier Winnie 15 or 16 some examples even younger was the age of loads of folks first nighter experience.Youngsters back then would more than likely mean the few 14 year olds and older folk would be those in mid to later twenties in the main.As you say very few abstained, nowadays when the words younger people are spoken in regard to the soul scene mid twenties or a bit older seems to me to be what is meant.Myself I was hitch hiking from Corby over to the North Park to hear Soul when I was 13 ,knew Harboro was on at the yime as a nighter and Corby lads who went and that dubes was good but didnt go to the nighter as I say was only 13(wished I had of done on reflection mind you if not on reflection on brown or clears, pirellis or the like),there wasnt much else other than word of mouth to let you know what was going on then. Guest Carl Dixon
Well, because of this and the Diane Shaw releases (of which I have one co write), I have been investigating studio hire and first call session musicians this morning with a view to making real music. I know I could head to Detroit/Philly again, but would really like to do a 'local' session with 3 or 4 songs I have written. There is a massive influence from the above songs/productions - see the bigger picture and realisation that those responsible for recording these in the 1960's had visions of being creative and against all the odds and negativity back then too, did it. Had they not took the risk, we would have nothing.... Edited March 27, 2015 by Carl Dixon Link to comment Social source share
