vnicepce Posted August 26, 2006 Share Posted August 26, 2006 I saw Edwin Starr (Charles Hatcher) three times, twice in Medway, and once, at the Jazz Cafe, in London. At the Jazz cafe (11/02) I recall him telling the audience to 'Keep the faith', and, down at the front, we were, in the audience , all shaking hands with him. He also appeared on Jools Holland's 'Later with..' prog., and I recall him reminiscing on Family Groups, in music, on another TV Prog, at the beginning of the '00s. He was a Brilliant Performer, and knew so much about Motown, and the Soul Music Scene-his death was a geat loss to us all, and the World of Music, generally. macca Posted August 26, 2006 Share Posted August 26, 2006 sir edwin could do no wrong in my book. songs like 'happy radio' & 'contact' were never my personal cup of meat, but one could never reproach him for doing them. 'I have faith in you' is an incredible testament to his vocal power. I saw him two or three times in the 70's & he always brought the house down. a lot of people used to grumble about the presence of live acts at all-nighters, but I like to think that edwin was the one exception that brought people together. sadly missed indeed. Supercorsa Posted August 26, 2006 Share Posted August 26, 2006 I first saw him at Tiffanys, Great Yarmouth (scooter run 1985) and was totally in enthralled by his performance. Funny how because he was always performing, and let's be honest, living in England, don't you sometimes think his performances were taken for granted. I mean look at the comments about acts when they come to perform (one off gigs) at weekenders, just get the feeling that he wasn't really appreciated as much as he should have been. Guest soul_hull Posted August 26, 2006 Share Posted August 26, 2006 (edited) i've met ES also - buddies nihgtclub dundee circa 1986 top guy - still got his autograph - Winny - peace - Edwin Starr (winny was my nickname - my last name being Wynne). he signed his name with a little star too. a real gent - full of smiles - and a great performance - he was also much remembered by the disco scene. he also has 'hits' on the funk scene as well - so an all round top guy. i know it's overplayed - but SOS is as swinging motown (sound) as you'll ever get. play it forever. Bigsoulman Posted August 26, 2006 Share Posted August 26, 2006 Our Edwin...what can you say ...he was doing a pub chain PA a few years ago, not singing live but to backing tracks and as soon as he entered the building he walked right in amongst the (healthy) crowd and started talking to people, me included, you just cannot imagine that such a stalwart of soul would want to talk to you.. and he spoke to me like he had known me for years!, my wife and I were awestruck to say the least, a bit later on a club bouncer came over and handed us tickets for the VIP lounge so we were able to meet our hero again and once again he spoke to us and posed for photo's...at his insistance! , he then said to me did I have a favourite song and before I could open my mouth he "don't tell me...I Have Faith In You"...to which I just nodded...open mouthed, one of my all time hero's as so so sadly missed by all of us, see pic on attachment RIP our Edwin Lenny Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...
Guest rasfoz Posted August 26, 2006 Share Posted August 26, 2006 Saw him several times through appearing at scooter events & club appearances, i remember him getting hassled by some little right wing idiot one night at morcombe scooter rally they had an alnighter on the pier, the crowd went mad could really off turned nasty for the big booted baldies but being the man he was he settled the crowd & gave an A1 performance , no matter to what audeince he performed to (as i saw him in the local nightclub once in high summer) he always spoke of & payed homage to the northern soul & scooter scenes, a real top voice & a great man Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...

On a funny note though, he was on one time at the Flamingo in Cleethorpes (it`s now the family pub across the road from the weekender). My wife, desperate for the loo went to the first PINK door she came to and on trying it found it locked. She then proceeded to barge it open and when it did finally fly open there was a very frightend looking Edwin ( turned out it was his dressing room and thought someone was after him ). The poor fella got himself together and escorted her to the right door like the true gent he was and even dedicated a track to her when he finally went on stage. His wife was nice too. If anyone would like to hear the interview there is a copy on the soultimepromotions website in the music section.
