Popular Post Jim Elliott Posted March 7, 2015 Author Popular Post Posted March 7, 2015 Agreed Mick. Probably the only " DJ" on mainstream radio who knows what he's on about. Jim 4
Westender Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 There was an Isley Bros and a Supremes track too. Really nice to hear Bobby Bland wrap up the show.
soulfulmick Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Agreed Mick.Probably the only " DJ" on mainstream radio who knows what he's on about.JimLike his throwaway "if you could find a Darrell Banks on London it might set you back a bob or two" lol 3
Theothertosspot Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 There was an Isley Bros and a Supremes track too. Really nice to hear Bobby Bland wrap up the show. Thought the Isley's original version (60's) sounds better than the 70's release, somewhat rawrer imo. 1
Sjclement Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Thought the Isley's original version (60's) sounds better than the 70's release, somewhat rawrer imo. Can't believe that was recorded in '64 well ahead of its time
Graham Anthony Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 He plays great stuff every Saturday.Over the past few weeks Nolan Chance, Ray Pollard, Ikettes, Elmore Morris and he always has a little story to tell about the artists. Well worth tuning in ! 1

Popular Post Hooker1951 Posted March 7, 2015 Popular Post Posted March 7, 2015 Brian Matthews as always been a Library of information covering all geners of Music I started listening to him in 1962 on the sat club BBC and of course Thank your Lucky Stars ITV Sat Eve. He always Had a nice easy going way of giving information and Trivia.Probably one of the most underrated people in the era of modern music post 1950 with his knowledge of modern music . keep on Pressing on ML 4
Popular Post Dayo Posted March 7, 2015 Popular Post Posted March 7, 2015 The legendary Brian Mathew! What a gentleman and a gentle man. He's always put the music first; never his ego. Gotta love him. And the fact that he's still broadcasting with such credibility on national radio at the age of 87 is nothing short of astonishing. What an achievement. An true inspiration. 10
Theothertosspot Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Jim - what was the Bland track? Mike Ain't that loving you, from 1961 1
Jim Elliott Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 Ain't that lovin you....Mike, SOTS is essential survival kit these days;) 3
Mr Fred Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Not taking anything away from Brian, as I understand It all the records on Brian's show are compiled By a guy called Phil (the collector)Swirn. Once again a great show . Regards Fred.

Guest Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) He played the album version of Hank Jacobs as well. He has no equals.........top bloke! Edited March 13, 2015 by Guest

Once again a great show . Regards Fred. You often see the name "Philip Swern" on 70s UK reggae recordings, as producer - surely must be the same guy
Roburt Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 A while back (couple of years ?) a Lou Ragland track was played on the show .... and B.M. gave a short bio on Lou's recording career ........ not a thing I EVER expected to hear on a mainstream BBC radio show.
Pete S Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 You often see the name "Philip Swern" on 70s UK reggae recordings, as producer - surely must be the same guy He was producing soul stuff around 74-75, came across his name in a few old Black Music mags recently, I knew him already as he bought my COD's on Stateside off me for the show, but didn't realise he had been around that long

ricticman Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 everyone in our family has this as essential listening for many years now ; and it's not just the NS.... hearing Pete Smith type girlie originals [ you know what I mean Pete - meant with real affection ], and USA originals of UK weak covers is always worth listening to agree with all the above, BM comes over as a completely ego - free zone [ unlike many radio djs ], but, would like to think he was aware of this thread and he has a bunch of fans for his show he might not have realised anyone know how that might be done ?
Staceys Dad Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) a large cup of tea...my paper ..at 7-50am..then back to my warm bed to listen to sounds of the 60s for 2 hrs ..then the day begins, wont even take the wife to the shops till after 10am.......the guy is a LEGEND.... Chatty Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 "but, would like to think he was aware of this thread and he has a bunch of fans for his show he might not have realised anyone know how that might be done ?" I have emailed the show to let him know and posted a link to this thread. 2
Mach Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Avid listener and have been for many years, Top Guy B.M...plays some real unexpected stuff, remember him playing Jerry Fullers, Double life a couple of yrs back..but i switch off pretty quick at 10 1
Chalky Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Another avid here. Usually listen on a monday when I get in the wagon. 1
Greety Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 I work Saturday mornings so I'm only in the van for snatches. I've heard Bernie Williams, Lou Ragland, you often get a Northern Fan doing three in a row. A guy about six months ago (Torch/Mecca boy) had Younghearts, Cheristine Cooper and Major Lance. Better then some Soul nights you go to nowadays. 1
Dave Rimmer Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 If we are at Jess's house on a Saturday we always time on. Thing is, even if he doesn't actually know all the background info, he presents it well. It doesn't sound like he's reading it from a crib sheet someone else prepared. And that's what makes him the best national radio presenter currently on air. 3
Jerry Hipkiss Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Thing is, even if he doesn't actually know all the background info, he presents it well. It doesn't sound like he's reading it from a crib sheet someone else prepared. And that's what makes him the best national radio presenter currently on air. ....and that's going to make him a very hard act to follow, as SOTS is one of very few shows which manages to please the casual listener and anoraks (come on, we are...:-) )...BTW if back in the 70's Johnny Walker's "Pop the question" quiz at lunchtime was essential listening, as it was in our staffroom at work, Phil Swern was producer of that as well!
Dave Callard Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Lou Ragland getting an airing now. First record on today....Fortune Teller ..Benny Spellman
Chatty Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 (edited) An interview with Phil (the collector) Swern which was on the radio yesterday. (Starts at 01.04.50 in the programme) https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05pl7hz The bit on the virtual dukebox sounds amazing! Edited April 8, 2015 by chatty
Addio Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Brian's last ever Radio 2 show today. Been a great listen over the years. 2
Guest Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Being replaced by Tony Blackburn but show will air at 6.00 am!
Jkpnefc Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 https://www.change.org/p/bbc-reinstate-brian-matthew-as-presenter-of-sounds-of-the-sixties?recruiter=52035497&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=share_petition 1

Brian has been a brilliant DJ and essential listening for so many years. I have no problem with Tony B taking over, but why 6.00AM????? Sounds Of The Sixties was the only radio program I actually purposely tuned into. Now that has effectively gone. So sad, and so bad.
Guest Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Radio Times suggest that listeners tune in via iplayer!!
Thinksmart Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Download the iPlayer app, set a reminder in MyRadio there and can easily stream or download at your choice of time 1
The Phantom Janitor Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Was always pleasantly suprised by some of the great tunes he used to play, won't be the same on a Saturday morning.
Bo Diddley Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 I'm sorry to see Brian leaving the show. Tony Blackburn is a good replacement as he was around at the time. Also very disappointing the show will be on at 6 am. It was a disgrace on the 11 am Radio 2 news that it was announced "after 27 years Brian has decided to step down for health reasons". From various interviews he's given, he's made it VERY CLEAR that he has been elbowed out and that he was disappointed by his treatment and keen to carry on. Shabby treatment and shabby news reporting. Best wishes to Brian and I look forward to any other broadcasts he does. 1
Guest Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 he will be doing occasional specials...one at Easter
Dayo Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Now that really is the end of an era. Massive kudos and appreciation to Brian Mathew and giant of the broadcasting world. Wonder if he's got any demos for sale.....;-)
Mr Fred Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 (edited) Just shows the bbc are out of touch with their listeners, or do they really care? the fact that many people signed the petition, seemed to change bbc's decision makers mind and to put on special one offs with Brian, only seems to add insult to injury.Sadly it's the usual case of after the horse has bolted.Only to read later that Tony Blackburn will be presenting future shows from 6.00am like someone has said above if it wasnt for bbc I player I just wonder how many regular listeners would tune in at all Regards Fred. Edited March 2, 2017 by Mr Fred
Mod66 Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Unfortunately sound of the sixties is soon to move to an earlier time without Brian Mathews. 6.00am to 8.00am Not sure of the date. There was an article in the Mail a few weeks ago. Have the BBC lost their minds! It will be hosted by Tony Blackburn
Guest Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 these decisions are made by young(er) producers......they are not interested in what the punter wants...they don't relate to the 'product' rather like bar staff who pay "their" own music for themselves.........not for the customers in the pub
Pete S Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Yet another reason not to pay the BBC the license fee 1
Guest Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Must admit to having that thought when struggling with "mumblegate"....BBC drama "SS-GB"...dialogue virtually inaudible. Thousands of listener complaints yet again ( you know, the license fee payer). BBC blame "modern TV's" .....not the producers/technicians who are only interested in playing with technology for a laugh. My "modern TV " has no problem with any other programmes..especially commercials..funny that!

Linda4me Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 (edited) Listening to the show now, silky Brian has been replaced by the bumbling idiot Tony shame on the BBC very little background on the artists or their songs Edited March 4, 2017 by linda4me 1
