Russ Vickers Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 I have recently bought the Beres Hammond LP Soul Reggae & wanted to recommend it, its bloody fantastic.........................even the couple of tracks that are Reggae on there are very good. Which all lead me to thinking whether there are any other Reggae Artists who have recorded straight up soul tracks, no Reggae rythms just proper soul..................Im not a big Reggae fan to be honest (sorry) but I have over the years heard some cracking soul records by predominantly reggae artists, any suggestions other than the obvious (Pioneers, Glen Miller, the other Beres Hammond 'favour' et al). Also, can anyone give me any history on the Soul Reggae LP by BH. Did it get reissued. My copy is on Tiger Lily, Im sure that I have read something before on SS about this LP being reissued or that it came out on two labels ??? but couldnt find it in a search, any help with this thankfully received. Russ

Obvously, Jackie Edwards, Jimmy Cliff (waterfall), Boris Gardner, Laurel Aitken (Never You Hurt, I've been Weeping And Crying nice R& , Jimmy James... There are also some unkown soul records made by "big" reggae artists like Alton Ellis, Desmond Dekker, etc... Also a lot of R&B on the ska days as b-sides. Cheers Dante

Another Beres Hammond to look for is his Red Light LP. It has a nice midtempo cut called Stand By & Derrick Harriott did a nice version of the Modulations-(I think it was) 'Worth your weight in gold'

BTW if you don't know it and you get a chance to do so, check out Lord Tanamo's great 1970 version on Studio 1 (and UK Bamboo or Banana, can't remember which). He called it "Keep On Moving", but it's the same song. TONE

I also love the Chosen Few - "In Miami" LP on Konduko and UK Trojan. It has some wicked funk and soul tracks on it, particularly "Wandering". Then there's Phillip and Lloyd's - "Baby I'm sorry" on Scepter, Beres Hammond's "Do this world a favour" also is a cracker. Jordi

He never made anywhere near enough records, unfortunatley, and most of his records ARE actually reggae, but soul fans who like both genres should check out his versions of Jerry Butler's "Aware Of Love" (Tramp) and the Fantastic Four's "I Love You Madly" (Splash - released in the UK on Explosion as "There Is Something About You" by 'Lloyd Charmers'). , if they get the chance, not to mention his recordings of his own songs "You Inspire Me" (Mo-Bay, released in the UK on Punch) and "Soon I'm Gonna Make It" (Justice) to name just four. He also did a killer straight soul cover of Clarence Carter's "I Can't See Myself Crying About You" (Upsetter, also released here on Upsetter( which is every bit as good as Doctor CC's and probably better. After his solo career ended, he joined the great Jamaican vocal group The Chosen Few and he appears on pretty much all of their 1970s records. TONE

Tried it once before with a couple of soul things and I couldn't get them into here... Anyway here's a scan for now, and yes, it is the flip of Dave Barker - 'She Want It'. The way I do it, stick the cd in, open windows media player, rip track using that (in settings you can choose what format to rip it in, choose mp3) then I reduce it in size using Acoustica mp3 converter, then just post it up..don't go to all that trouble if it's a problem though mate
