Dave Sulcas
I know this thread goes back a while but this is doing my head in. Been asked to do a set Friday night locally bit of Motown for the handbag brigade etc. So me thinks buy a few cheapies Chairman of Board that sort of stuff and what came to mind Scrub Board £6.99 sorted. Now am i going senile, because the version i was doing my whirling dervish impression to, had a brake in the music half way through for about 4 secs and then carried on or was that just my imagination running away with me. Yes, Scrub Board has always had that break in it 1 Link to comment Social source share
Mick Holdsworth
When the "Fabulous Zing" LP was released, the version of Scrub Board was without the break that we knew from the single from a few years before, which obviously had the break. So you're not going Senile. The full length album version of the vocal was released in Europe, backed with the album version of the Inst (ie. without the break) I can't remember which country issued it, but it was black Buddah. Must have been at the same time as the Album. Edited March 29, 2022 by Mick Holdsworth typo 1 Link to comment Social source share

I hope you’re gonna treat the handbag brigade to 6 by 6...now that’s what I call a proper party-starter. 1 Link to comment Social source share

Frankie Crocker
Maybe we’ve entered an era of ‘semi-instrumentals’ with the likes of Manny Corchado and Gentleman June Gardner being two of the biggest tunes in recent years? I put ‘Ton Of Dynamite’ in that category, but in truth, it felt like a vocal back in the day. None of the previous posts mention Mike Post or Travis Wammack, two of the biggest instrumentals of the 70’s. Super-fast dance music for serious dancers. There’s still a place for soulful instrumentals these days - plenty of top tunes have a great backing track on the flip eg Al Wilson’s ‘Help Me’, Saxie Russell’s ‘Psychedelic Soul’ to name but two brilliant pairings. 1 Link to comment Social source share

Both instrumental sides of Psychedelic Soul and Help Me were played first on the Scene, long before the vocal sides. 1 Link to comment Social source share

Always a staple when I play a set at the crown in burslem, Stoke, I use the break to segue into the vocal, double bubble! Link to comment Social source share
Ageing Face
Back in the late 70’s I’d always start & close my sets with instrumentals, usually “The In Crowd”, Ramsey Lewis & Mood Mosaic’s “Touch of Velvet” to close. If nobody danced they were perfect to speak over & if the danced it was a bonus As for instro’s to dance to, in my younger days when I threw myself around a little more “You Can’t Sit Down” by Phil Upchurch Combo used to do it for me Link to comment Social source share
