Patto Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 All i can say is WOW thats what i call a podcast.I frequented a few of the 90s venues Keele,Bretby,Blackburn,Griffin,first Stoke Togetherness,Trentham Gardens,Manchester Ritz,and they were great times when the scary corner people were still around.Even the soul nights were top notch back then with Hollingwood,Tony Banks Brighouse,Early Prestwich,Earl of Donny all great nights.This podcast of fantastic tunes captures that time period and i remember hearing many of them and most not since back then. I think underneath the swaths of BIG records this was one of the biggest tracks of the decade, if you think how readily available it was, and how may bought it... Also remember All Brighton and Gino - Its only a a Paper Moon / Tommy Fontera - Your my Leading Lady, great tracks those two, Try Dodds on El Camino made a come back, I guess that was Stafford initially, and who could forget when 'Harvey - Any Way You Wanta' went big, you heard that literally everywhere you went... Remember Ady playing The Devonnes - Doin' The Gittin' Up at the Manchester Ritz, Rarest of the Rare allnighter, Gladys Knight & the Pips - No One Could Love You More was massive wasn't it, and Kim Weston - A Thrill A Moment as the River Bar in town... a certain favorite from everybody there.. How big was Ernestine Eady - The Change massive...Delilah Kennebreuw — Bright lights, and everybody wanted Andrea Henry - Need you like a baby, they still do I think....best mention 'The Falcons - Good Good Feeling'... I'm not gonna knock the new stuff, cause its all old music which ever way you look at it, and there are lots of great new tracks to discover, but I cant help liking the tracks that were big in the 9ts.... Every track you have mentioned were hammered by the time you were Djing, many had been dropped by your more forward thinking DJ as oldies. Joy Lovejoy was a staple of most oldies nights. If your mates said the vocal to Hopes and Dreams was rarely played then then they weren't what you call hardcore. Did you really have Man O Man on La Cindy? It had been covered up since the mid 80's by Butch and very few copies about. Butch was the only one I heard play it at Bretby. 90's was a bleak time really for discoveries IMO. The music had by and large taken a huge backward step with very few progressive DJ's getting a look in at the larger venues. Oldies were becoming the staple of many playlists and the thirst for new discoveries were drowning in a sea of mediocrity IMO. There were venues still doing the business though, The Wilton where many collectors were given a chance, The 100 Club, Droyslden, Duncan Pollett and Pete Hollander over in Cheshire etc, Winsford etc etc. There were still DJ's plugging away with new discoveries which because of the reliance on oldies took some years to filter through. Butch of course, Kitch and Dean, Andy Rix, Ady...etc. Anyway excellent podcast Martyn, you are getting good at this

I was given a copy to spin by a friend who was 'active' to know at the time.....since the 70's. It did as I described and know...or heard...nowt else!x It may have had local exposure....but National???/ I never danced to it until I spun it at me soul night a year into the scene and after say 30 nighters under me belt for the year??? As for Walter.....it was Shifty's I believe...or Fingers.....or u know wot....I can't remember and weren't bothered!!!!x As I was 'representing' the then 'new wave' on the National scene....then Shifty....I think even Lenny and certainly Kev Fev in Norwich.....many folk who had awesome collections insisted on giving me tunes too play!!!! Emporer of My Baby's Heart Kev Fev made me spin it at the 100 Club.....never heard it poo'd meself......!!!!x They lent me tunes. Shifty didn't get National until I persuaded Mick/Little Scotty to put him on....and he was away and rightly so. He lent me Your My Mellow too....cos I wanted to spin the B side My Kind of Woman....and did....he wouldn't sell me it....!! Never heard that on the National stage over 9 years.....unless I spun it!!!x That's all I remember. Ain't givin it sum or owt and not meaning to Chalky....just being as honest as I recall. There is this factor too. Records in East Anglia I found massive........went flat up tNorf!!! Same t'other way round!!! Some tunes got huge in an area because he local DJ had them!! I remember going to Lennys Wellingboro'. Him...Ciro...Dave Vanner.......they were spinning tunes that I didn't hear at Nighters for another year.......if it was being spun.....i;'d have known!!!!! Folks first thing they did as they saw me was chew me lugholes off telling me wot happened here there and everywhere!!!!!! I called it intelligence gathering and quite often picked their brains up off the floor as they parted which they thanked me for....hehe!!!x So....from my memory.....the tunes I mention weren't 'prolific' NATIONALLY on the nighter scene......that I heard. Some may have had their day in the 80's/90s....and I ain;t being disrespectful to them either. I just 'had it away' with these. By the early 90's whenever I heard Jimmy Fraser I was beginning to think, "not again" but I must have been imagining hearing it as it wasn't played anywhere only the instrumental?

I didn't say the records were finished did I? I said they'd been hammered and most of the DJ's who played them had dropped them because they'd been hammered and were no longer either exclusive and every Tom Dick and Arry was spinning them. The Hyperions Why You Wanna Treat Me, monster for Rob Marriott from 88ish into the 90's, Jimmy Robbins was a five quid record in every sales box and was done and dusted for many DJ's by the early 90's. Etta James the same. You obviously missed out on these and by the time you were DJing you were playing catch up but you weren't to know this having not been around. As for Kurt Harris it was one of the biggest records on the scene and had been since the mid 80's. Just because you didn't hear it doesn't mean it wasn't around and being played, plenty of places and DJ's back then were playing them. There was more than you being "hardcore"

But somebody somewhere has played them all.....I know that! Martin was talking of 'tunes of the 90's'. My list is among them and every tune i;ve seen listed is too. I remember them all! Who played what where and first???.....clueless!! But......when ure busy and involved....u knew what was 'in' and what was on the way out or had enuff of! I never had that feedback and wouldn't have done it to myself with a tune.......there's enuff tunes out there init!x We see the world from our own eyes....i'm no different. "In orbit" was popular enough that by 1972 that it was included on a UK Chess compilation album at the time. this has always been a popular cheap oldie since when God was a boy.

Used to love it at Bretby, Manchester Ritz, etc, with everyone clapping along yep that was my nineties also.......the best of times ..imho

Who played what where and first???.....clueless!! But......when ure busy and involved....u knew what was 'in' and what was on the way out or had enuff of! I never had that feedback and wouldn't have done it to myself with a tune.......there's enuff tunes out there init!x We see the world from our own eyes....i'm no different.
