Winnie :-)
The thing that perplex's me the most is that presumably these people can't dance to any sort of music to begin with, so what would suddenly make someone pick northern as a style to learn? They've surely not been secretly desperate for X amount of years to learn the footsie because they once heard the music, pick your own scenario, I'm going with... because they once heard the music at an aqua aerobics class, and they just haven't been able to express their eternal cerebral connection, through the medium of the front crawl. I suppose they could have been bitten by a radio active Binstanley and instantly mirrored his renowned altruism where all things northern are concerned, but this seems just as unlikely as he doesn't strike me as someone who leaves much on his plate come meal time and he wouldn't have stopped at a nibble. Maybe we should just put it down to a stroke of good fortune, and accept that it was decreed in the stars, Mars aligned with Uranus and what could have been a sticky chocolatey bum situation, was avoided because Pluto decided to give northern soul dancing tuition. An enigma indeed... Link to comment Social source share

Amsterdam Russ
I'm neither for nor against "Northern Soul dance classes", but what gets me is that every time I watch one of these videos I just don't recognise the dance style. What they're doing is nothing more than the "disco here, disco there" style of dancing you see at family weddings and stuff. Northern Soul used to have a unique dance style that went with the unique music. What happened to it? Link to comment Social source share

Guest
If they want to learn to dance why don't they go to an all-nighter and copy the dancing! At least that would support what Northern Soul should be, people going to all-nighters and showing a bit of commitment! There's too many people just playing at it! Mark S
We cosy up to the mainstream via films , TV appearances and adverts etc what did you think would happen ? We love unique music and out of that has grown a culture thats as unique now its being trivialised by all this rubish . Back in 77 someone should have given Tony Palmer a slap . Guest Byrney
Hilarious - the media has played part of spawning fluffy stuff like this (although not convinced a film with lads whacking up, paranoid and fighting is an attractor to the Zumba soulies). I think the main reason for a rise in banal stuff like this is that the nostalgia scene is market led and accepting in a way that Salsa is to all that want to join and shape it. It's a nice safe place for 50 something's to recreate a past. They will accommodate the limited experience of the newcomer and respond to their dance floor requests hence an extremely limited playlist. Join the dance class, buy a cd with the same old songs and your in. Good business for some but ultimately a departure from what we knew as Northern Soul. Guest Russell H
Keep the proles out, don't let anyone into our exclusive club. How dare they want to get fit by exercising to good music, don't they know that if they want to listen to NS they have to have been 4th in the queue for the Twisted Wheel and own at least 2000 vinyl records nobody else has ever heard of (or ever will)? Unless you enjoy this thing exactly the way I do, you're doing it all wrong and should stay away forever! Sod that. I thought this was supposed to be an inclusive, welcoming scene, a community? I thought soul music was about sheer joy, or heartache with a beat? Not about sneering at anyone who wants to join in with even the vaguest fringe aspects. I'm not a hardcore soulie. I own no vinyl, and have no interest in doing so. I've just heard a lot of the music over my years on the scooter scene and through my enjoyment of sixties/seventies tunes in general, and wanted to learn more and go deeper. I like to dance, but I can never get the moves down like the best of them. I was thinking of going to my first nighter this weekend, but if this is the attitude I'll be encountering then you can keep it. I'll stick to my CDs. Russel feel free to do what you feel is right for you - but i feel you are wrong to criticise the people on here who are commenting about this thread! What you must remember and take on board is that the full point of peoples critisism here is that the "proper northern / rare soul scene" WAS AND STILL IS incredibly close to a lot of peoples hearts - people have spent many hours, weeks and years caring for and keeping alive a scene that was once raw, underground, undiluted (especially in the early days), special, exclusive etc. etc. Collectors have dedicated their lives in searching for rare and exclusive records in an attempt to keep the scene moving forward (which after 40 years is very diffficult) What we are witnessing is the (albeit small) commercialisation of this RAW, UNDERGROUND scene, into a "new scene" that WE simply cannot relate to - the nostalgia, people dressing in clothes from the 70's, dancing (poorly!) to overplayed records, paying too much for overplayed and non-rare records, attending venues where the promotors are only in it for the money and their own ego etc. etc. This is why we are critical about the crap like this thread - there is no RAWNESS in this "new scene", nobody pushing any boundaries etc. etc. I suggest you read Elaine Constantines book about Northern - that may give you an idea of what i am trying to say - it gets the point across about how RAW and "rough n ready" the scene once was - OK i am aware that things move forward but to move forward into the shit that we are witnessing at present - well, it just doesn't sit right with me and a lot of other on here In summary, WE have every right to comment about something that we see was OURS being diluted and commercialised into something that we don't recognise Best Jim 12 Link to comment Social source share
