Those sound like great days, I'd love to have been around in the early times these sounds were first being played.

I'd add Lee Andrew's & The Hearts I've Had It on Crimson to that list. Great record. It mustn't have been all that rare in my early days (1974) 'cos I'm sure I used to hear it at our Youth Club. Don't quite get its 200+ price tag these days. Did it get reactivated and the price is propelled by demand?

Lee Andrews got booted early 74, which would explain it being a Youth Club Spin at the time.

The orig well not super rare as never been common.

Jez,

OK mate sorry to hear about your recent problems with CB.

Saxie Russell did come up from The Cats.

The Tangeers, I know I sold a couple to certain non Wigan DJ's early 73.

I could think of a lot more but how big they were before Wigan is very dificult to assess.

Trying not to make this thread just one long list - not long back I played Art Freeman's "Slipping around" when the crowd needed lifting...sure fire winner I thought...result? Tumbleweed! Funnily enough an old mate reported the same thing happened to him, same tune, last weekend. Anyone else stuck a "guaranteed floor filler" on the decks recently and had the opposite effect?

Slightly off topic?

Don't collect British as such but for some reason I would love red UK Atlantic copy of Art Freeman??Don't really know why I just do???

So Jerry if yours is a British copy & you want to sell it cheap as it's a floor emptier I'm your man

Cheers

US Fame demo here Martyn, don't bother with the British if you want to listen to it, it was dubbed from vinyl so sound quality isn't as good...and sorry mate, it's a keeper ;-)

One of the first tunes I can remember as a 14 year old in 1970 was Que Sera Sera by the High Keys, I still like it now although I haven't heard it played anywhere since then. I always assumed it was an old Wheel tune, maybe somebody could put me right on this.

It was booted in the early days on a green labelled Crimson! So can't of been that easy to get!

Great quality record and one I would buy again if I didn't already have it.

Now this is one interesting thread. Having got into this on the arse end of 78 I had many of these records (not all mind) as Wigan tunes.

This list has blown a serious hole on what I thought was the portfolio of quality records that came from Wigan. It's looking like the golden era - other than the real one on the 80s 90s ;) ;) was pre Wigan :)

Don't forget there was another Wigan going on before Wigan Casino Allniters from 1963 till 73 with all kinds of things being played parallel to anywhere in the country Wigan Casino didn't have the monopoly on the soul scene till 1973 but there was soul being played there from At least 1970 I know I worked There. the Room At the Top Club Wigan was playing Mod, Stax Atlantic All American imports for four years from 1964 till 1968 at their Soul nights and their weekly Allniters  so there is a good chance that some not all could have been played at Wigan.Ive said it before and I'll say it again Wigan didn't discover soul in 1973 go back ten years to 1963. I was there. Cheers ML

Good point ..well made Mick...and its exactly these 'type' of clubs pre Casino Allnighters....that 'unearthed' gems in their playlists......apart from the obvious Torch.Wheel, Cats, Blue Orchid...etc etc etc etcs....the DJ's from the 'lesser known clubs improvised and created playlists from a 'smaller pool' than what we enjoy today......................

I stumbled across these two the other day....which I first heard at one of the smaller less well known venues....probably NOT allnighter fodder nowadays (but they possibly got spins at Whitworth st)......but pleasant enough

Pretty Red Balloons..........Rosetta Hightower

Clarence Carter.....Looking for a Fox
