Guest davew Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 P&D's Yate Revival - read the contents and smile; reputation of northern soul! "The bad reputation of Northern Soul " as I remember all the trouble was caused by Teddy boys and pissed up locals staggering about shouting "Furk Orf yew Northern Soulers" and generally trying to impress the local slappers in a sort of mini version of the Punk thing before the Casino, where they all staggered about shouting "Fook Off you freaky gets"
Guest martyn Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Mac was definitely in the line-up during Dink's promotions; one more that springs to mind then is Danny Everard, who did a spot or two when the upstairs room was open, and Tony Warot who did a main room guest spot in early '79. Correct,Tony was in my motor from Bedford that (& many other) nights.
Jerry Hipkiss Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Correct,Tony was in my motor from Bedford that (& many other) nights. And to prove it...here he is at Yate with Dave T in '78.
Guest malayka Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 (edited) Bugger me I was thin. I remeber those speakers, they were my mate's Dave (Changing Times Roadshow) Gardner. He used to loan them to us for Yate, great system. Turntable used to start as you moved the volume sliders up. Must get the hang of signing in, Dave T here again. Edited October 16, 2007 by malayka

And that was at the time when we were using the DJ booth at the side of the dancefloor, with the legendary "backroom boys" (Widd, Ady, Roger Stewart etc) in the area behind - all vinyl purchases were carefully scrutinised and approved by the boys as you passed through to put 'em in your box! Magic!

Dave Thorley Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 A strong rumour that Manifesto founder and old mate Ian 'Polly' Palmer is going to show his face at the re-union. Also others rumoured to be heading along are old Yate stalwarts Micky Beaton, Joanne Schiazza and Eddie Hubbard. A top night going to be had

A top night going to be had I've texted Rich Marsh from the first line-up, hopefully he'll be along as well...oh, and talking to Paul O'Brien over a pint last night, he confirmed that he DID do a spot once, when either Roch or Bob Turner were (mentally or physically ) missing... Tim Smithers Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Dont let us forget the late Andy Golding from Poole who played some blinding stuff.
Guest bazabod_downunder Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Dont let us forget the late Andy Golding from Poole who played some blinding stuff. Just managed to dig out even more old pics from Yate, 1st one is Nick McAvoy, Me & Anne from Kiddiminster, 2nd is Pauline Shiels from Worcester, 3rd is Anne from Kiddiminster, 4th is Tom Wylie & Karen Munford from Poole, 5th is Steve Carter from Poole & Maxine Dudding from Great Yarmouth, 6th is Bob Terry. One memory of Andy Golding is when giving him lifts back from Yate, he useta stink my car out, myself & Bob Norman were talking about him recently. Bob Norman bought the remainder of Nick McAvoys collection in the early 90's, some of which get regular plays here in Australia, I asked Bob ages ago if my copy of Ellusions was in there, as I never, ever got it after swopping a nice Brunswick demo of Adams Apples for it plus an issue, got the issue but never the Ellusions. I also think that Neil Donkin from Swanage may have been on that DJ list as well.........I remember the night he got 900 quid worth of records pinched. Had some good chats with Mark Heaney (originally Plymouth) about Yate in Perth WA (where he now lives) & also in Sydney last month. Baz

Guest bazabod_downunder Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 You're probably right Jerry, however he always took his records & of course 'they' got played, he was pretty well connected financially through family, the reason why it sticks in my mind about the records getting nicked was that was about the amount I was earning per anum & was like 'fark it'll take me a year to earn that'. Dug out some old 'soul source' mags from that period & there is a article on the letters page from Ian Clarke regarding Neil & a certain person cutting EMI's from the tapes that Neil had innocently supplied. Baz No mate, Neil Donkin never DJ'd at Yate.
Guest bazabod_downunder Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Will do Tim, I''l see him beginning of the month in Adelaide for the 10th Australian National Weekender......I saw the pics of him at The Railway Club, Jonah ain't changed much, mind you neither have you. Dave Thorley Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Just been able to track down another original Yate dj-Richard Marsh, I haven't seen him in 30 years. Richard DJ'd when John Kojac Harvey's Inter-City Soul Club ran the allnighter. He has agreed to do the first hour, so now we have a full and original Yate line up for the Re-union!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guest Nik Mak Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Some a bit confused by all that went on there, and that's no great suprised. Three/four different promoters, two venues, lots of dj's so here's a bit of a breakdown (best I can remember, with a few spelling mistakes) and I might have missed the odd dj. Inter-City Soul Club-John 'Kojak' Harvey Started at Stars & Strips (Two rooms, main room northern, upstairs funk) finished at The Baths as a one room event. Dj's Kojak Pep Blue Max Steve Smith Marc Mouise Dave Thorley Mac Soul Twins Brian S Dave Godin (Twice) Bob Mean Smokey Richard Marsh Southern Soul Club-Dinks Stars & Strips, Sterling Suite DJ's Ian Clark Tony Ellis Paul Guntrip & Jacko Roch & Bob Dave Greet Hippo Mac Dave Thorley Shay Soul Sam (Guest) Tony Warrott South West Soul Club-Nick Mcavoy Stars & Strips, Sterling Suite DJ's Nick Mcavoy Ian Clark Tony Ellis Dave Thorley Hippo Dave Greet Ady Pountain Dave Withers Gary Rushbrooke Paul Guntrip & Jacko (I think) Andy Golding Stars & Strips Management (last few) Stars & Strips, Sterling Suite DJ's Ian Clark Tony Ellis Dave Thorley Hippo Dave Greet Ady Pountain Dave Withers Gary Rushbrooke N. HI all. This is Nik McAvoy. I was one of the three promotors for the Yate all-nighters . I've been looking at the posts with a lot of interest so I thought I'd put my two penith' in! Time has clouded a few things but hopefully this will clear up my time promoting Yate. Dj Line up was everyone except Paul Guntrip/Jacko. Sorry don't remember those names. The club was called 'The South of England soul club' (5000 members when it closed!). If you look at the picture of Hippo you can see the MDF Board/Banner I painted with the logo on it! The T-shirts were designed by me and printed by my Mum. There were also sweatshirts. Three colours White,Blue & Grey (I think!). Didn't realise that the management carried on with the gig after I left! They were always gready and untrustworthy so I'm not surprised. I've dug out a load of pics from the time just need to scan them in and post them so will hopefully get them up in the next few days. I have great memories of the gig as it set me on my way in the nightclub business wich I still do to this day. My Dj-ing spots there are some of the best memories I've ever had and always get me smileing. The crowd were amazing freindly and very knowledgable and the Dj's I booked were some of the best I've had the privaledge to work with. Great ,great memories. Keep on Stompin' N.
Lloydee Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 So Nik, you'll be coming along to the Yate Revivel then? I'll be wearing my blue T-shirt as purshased on the door at one of the nights Details are HERE

I'll be wearing my blue T-shirt as purshased on the door at one of the nights Details are HERE Ha!Ha!Ha! Gonna try and make it if the diary permits. Would love to have been asked to play but alas it seems to be the early line up rather than my time there! Still gonna try hard to get there and hook up with some old faces.

Would love to have been asked to play but alas it seems to be the early line up rather than my time there! Still gonna try hard to get there and hook up with some old faces. Top news, Nik McAvoy-Yate DJ and the last true promoter of the venue has agreed to join us. He will be doing a set in the modern room. After Yate, Nik stayed in the music scene working as a producer and DJ on the House and Garage scene. He is now a club owner down on the south coast. He is so looking forward to catching up with old faces on the night.
