HI all. This is Nik McAvoy. I was one of the three promotors for the Yate all-nighters . I've been looking at the posts with a lot of interest so I thought I'd put my two penith' in!

Time has clouded a few things but hopefully this will clear up my time promoting Yate.

Dj Line up was everyone except Paul Guntrip/Jacko. Sorry don't remember those names. The club was called 'The South of England soul club' (5000 members when it closed!). If you look at the picture of Hippo you can see the MDF Board/Banner I painted with the logo on it! The T-shirts were designed by me and printed by my Mum. There were also sweatshirts. Three colours White,Blue & Grey (I think!). Didn't realise that the management carried on with the gig after I left! They were always gready and untrustworthy so I'm not surprised. I've dug out a load of pics from the time just need to scan them in and post them so will hopefully get them up in the next few days. I have great memories of the gig as it set me on my way in the nightclub business wich I still do to this day. My Dj-ing spots there are some of the best memories I've ever had and always get me smileing. The crowd were amazing freindly and very knowledgable and the Dj's I booked were some of the best I've had the privaledge to work with. Great ,great memories.

Keep on Stompin'

Didn't Pete Widdison DJ at Yate?

Andy Golding - one of the south's finest and sadly missed - RIP

Pete was an important part of the Yate scene, but as far as I know didn't DJ there - unless it was a one-off on one of the very few nights I missed!

Hippo.

thanks for that Hippo - my memory is not as good as it was  i do remember that i owe Pete £50 so if anyone has contact details for him i would love to square my debt

No, Pete's job at Yate was the organisation of 'The Card School', back stage, which ran from about 4am until closing time. Also he found many a top tune that were played at Yate.

Pete did DJ at Stafford in the oldies room.

I set off from Oldham, drove to Lincoln where Dave Godin cooked me an awful veggie meal, which I said was OK, of course.

Then drove him and that guy he used to live with, who's name escapes me now, down to Yate.

had a great night then drove back to Lincoln to drop them off then back to Oldham where I slept for a day.

I remember Dave, who never drove, couldn't understand why I got so worried about petrol on the way home.

Look the bloody mileage up :-)

This great little allniter in the West Country, was the starting place for so many people. It ran for five fraught years under five different promoters, but was so much fun.

Saw Rowland a few months ago and we spent several hour in fits, re-counting story after story from those great lost years. Martin Peerman dressed up as Jake The Pake, Steve Smith's amazing spins, that could result in several tables being taken out when they went wrong. The night it snowed in late may and it took us five hours to get just 20 miles home. Lost the car exhaust after only 3 miles, cuz I had 7 people in the car plus 3 dj boxes and the deep snow ripped it off. The slight disagreements with the locals in yate before some of the allniters. Great days!!!!!!:rolleyes:

Your addition welcome

GREAT DAYS INDEED,......ERR SLIGHT DISAGREEMENTS,BIT OF AN UNDERSTATEMENT THERE.....HURLEY BATS,MILK CRATES THROUGH CAR WINDOWS....BIG SAM FROM BRUM LAYING EM OUT TO ORDER......COME ON YATE THOSE DAYS WERE GREAT!!!!!

Anyone got any posters(Maybe even for sale)

As I said to you when we talked on Sunday Frank , that after you put your first few posts / replies on SS , you will stop being nerveous about it .......

You are no longer a SS virgin  ..........

The chap who resided with Dave in Lincoln , and latterly in Sheffield , when Dave moved there , was Alf Billingham .........

I last saw , and caught up with Alf , at Dave's funeral service , several years ago ........

Will ring you tonight Frank .......

I remember one Saturday night, we decided not to go to Wigan. Let's go to Yate for a change and hear somethin different. Besides, snow was forcast and thinking cleverly not to travel North. Big mistake! A few of us from Wolves met up with some lads from Pleck, Bazza and Bobby Hanson (RIP, God bless him), had a few drinks and set off down the M5. Light snow at Worcester got thicker and thicker the further south we got. Just managed to find the junction just after Micheal Wood services, then we didn't have a clue. Throwing little Rob out to knock the snow off the road signs to navigate. Hours later, someone say's "That's the place". Poor Rob's Doc Martins were sodden at this stage, "I gotta change my boots" he said. We soon jumped out of our Escort van, after the worst smelling feet i've ever experienced. Regardless of his trench foot we piled in the venue and a great night! which lasted about 90 minutes before a power cut. Snow and bad weather had bought down power lines.

Sounds like a nightmare, but the memories of this night stands out with everyone who went, the piss taking and laughing will stay with us forever. Our music makes our scene but our Friends make it Awesome.

Hi

Not sure if you know but Di is still on the scene, out & about as always & still as full of fun & cheekiness as she always was. Saw Polo a few years back & he hadn't changed one little bit......I would recognise his hair anywhere! As for Karon she is still in Malvern & I'm pretty sure she's living with Dave E. If not I'm sure someone would put me right. For me Yate was only second to the Torch but a very close second. :D

Gary and Julie went their different ways a good few years ago, Gary remarried and seems well settle in a new life. Did try and get him to DJ at the Stafford re-union a few years ago, but he ducked out at the last moment. :wicked: Not sure what Julie is doing with her self now days, anyone know.

THE LATTER TWO ONLY ATTENDING WITH MYSELF TO WATCH MY ARSE IN CASE ANYTHING UNTOWARD CAME ON TOP.WHEN WE GOT THERE THE O B STILL NOT AT THE SCENE. THE MINI CAR WAS EITHER RARRED UP A LAMPOST OR TREE. I WAS IN RIPPED, THE ROOF LINEING OUT, IT SEEMED NO OTHER PERSONS HAD BEEN NEAR. THOUGHT CHRISTMAS HAD COME EARLY. HOW WRONG, I FOUND FEK ALL, GOOD JOB I WAS ALREADY SORTED. Can't believe this post is still running. Went to the Gloucester Allnighter last night saw lots of old faces from back in the day. Leon (top mate), Karen James, Hippo, Sue and many more, a bit like old times.

Great to see everyone and just 15mins from home

I have joined this site so I can add to this thread.

I have been looking at all the you tube dance clips and wondering if Yate was on any of them...

I was a regular there in 74 - 75. I lived nearby and used to walk to the venue each Saturday night firstly for the 'disco session and then of course than the disco would shut down and we would all go to the caf on the ground floor waiting for the all nighter to open up.

Then we would dance to the very early hours about 9 am in the morning. then I would walk home.

I have tried to see if I can remember any faces in the photos but none come to mind... Afraid I can't remember any names either.... I just used to dance.

I wish I could do still do it these days

I doubt if anyone remembers me as I was not much of one to chat to people I just liked to dance.

I will try to keep up with any postings about the Yate venue.

Thanks for jogging my memories.

I had the good fortune to attend the Yate allnighter in the summer of 1979. One Saturday night I went into my local pub for a night on the beer walked into three lads who were going to Yate later on and asked if I wanted to tag along with them, went home got some money and had one of the best nights ever. We travelled in a very tired mark 2 Jaguar which took just over an hour to get to Yate from Wolverhampton, no speed cameras in those days else Andy RIP would have certainly lost his licence. Great night for many reasons that's why I can remember it so clearly 37 years later.

FInally found my old Niter tapes, here's the first side from Yate which includes one of the most iconic Yate records Frankie & Johnny,

Other records associated with Yate also on the tapes I found include On A Magic Carpet Ride (still covered as Chris Clark) and Kris Petersons "Just As Much.

Any chance of hearing the tapes? The records played etc will come in handy for the book.
