Guest GeoffB Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Just watched the full version and can confirm that I cringed. The routine that involves polishing your shoes and doing the ironing of those pants? That must take most of the day on it's own! And then the "playing the part" thing?! What a load of rubbish.
Popular Post Cunnie Posted January 12, 2015 Popular Post Posted January 12, 2015 Just hope it's a one off & not a cereal....... 10
Popular Post Steve S 60 Posted January 12, 2015 Popular Post Posted January 12, 2015 Eat 4 shredded wheat and you too can dance till dawn……………….. Yet another low point, how much more can a person take Eat two and put the other two on either side of your face for authentic looking sideburns. 11

Popular Post Winnie :-) Posted January 12, 2015 Popular Post Posted January 12, 2015 I have a confession to make. A while back I was added to a group, on facebook, basically a casting group. Thought it might be a laugh, so this job comes up, and I'm invited to audition. I said ok because I wasn't up to much. I said I wouldn't do anything I considered tacky. It turned out that it was this ad. This was on the Monday on the Tuesday news of Tony Warots death broke, so I wasn't in a good place. Had already decided to say no, but was still being contacted, on the Thursday night I got a message asking me to bring clothes I'd worn in the 7Ts and other memorabilia, and to bring it all to Manchester the next day at 11 for my audition. All to much and I declined. Reason for the confession, we'll some of the people on this thread are the harshest critics of commercialisation of the northern scene, and I include myself in that category. But it could have been me. I'm fairly confident even without the tragic news about Tony I would have turned it down, but I can't be 100% sure. 4
Jordirip Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Nicely shot ad though., just a shame about the baggies. 2

Popular Post Markw Posted January 13, 2015 Popular Post Posted January 13, 2015 because some on here would knock anything.......think they would prefer it back in the 90s with hardly any venues and the same people at every one..........god forbid anyone new getting into it!!! It's a Shredded Wheat advert. Who on earth thinks any youth will be inspired to become a young soul rebel by a Shredded Wheat advert full of middle-aged people in retro clothes? 10

Suppose you don't own any jeans because you're not a cowboy! What about 50s pin ups skin heads and mods? Not allowed to dress with a nod to the past to an era they are passionate about because it's 2015?

I think he has got a cool dress sense personally, just let down by the baggies which was never a cool look in any era on any planet. A pair of Levi Sta press narrow trousers would have looked a lot cooler IMO. Gok Kwan

If the fashion police stand on every door at a soul do that wipes out a good few punters for being too retro and wearing what they like And why not listen to todays fashions in music while we're all at it It isn't what is being worn in these adverts. The fashion depicted was fashion for a short time mid 70's, it soon passed for another. Why does everyone who wishes to portray the soul scene want to depict the certain type of clothes being shown when it isn't the case except for a minority. It isn't the adverts that is the problem, it isn't those in them but how the scene is perceived to be. You only have to go on other social media outlets. The ridiclue being shown is far worse than here. I am all for anyone wearing what they want but I do wish they would stop using the image they are using everytime they wish to use the scene to sell their product. Edited January 13, 2015 by chalky 6
Popular Post Pete S Posted January 13, 2015 Popular Post Posted January 13, 2015 Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, Harringtons - these are smart clothes, timeless, that can be worn with anything really. They have been around for 50 years or more. As Chalky says, the baggy trouser era lasted from 1972 to 1979, then vanished. I'm also at a loss as to why they have to keep focusing on a relatively short period. 11

Just dont get the whole facination with clothes from a scene that spans five decades the overiding impression is a ridiculous look that was prevalent for a couple of years in the seventies . The soul scene is primarily about the music and for me sticking two fingers up at convention and stereotypes so why the need by some to embrace the media is beyond me . Northern soul flashmobs dancing butterbeans in Blackpool , The One show and now this , its not cool and is rapidly becoming the very dross we were all trying to escape from in the first place . 6

Can't agree with this. I love the young blood getting into it. I was young once and love their enthusiasm. My beef is with people wanting fame at any price and making a mockery in the process. Lucky One Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Yet another cringe worthy image of the scene is on main stream television. My wife and I together with my sister attended goodyears soul night in Wolverhampton on Saturday night, which we do from time to time mainly to see Ted Massey's spot which was very good as usual. My sister has lived in Australia for over twenty years is on holiday and loves the music and attends soul nights in Perth not far from her home, was very surprised to see people wearing 1970`s style clothes at the event, something that does not happen in Australia. The question she asked was why do they do it, that is one I would like to know the answer to my self having lived through that decade myself and always considered it a decade that style forgot as been quoted many times and totally agree with. When I go back to work tomorrow I hope no one has seen it and asks, do you wear that type of clothing at the soul do`s you attend here`s hoping. 1

Soul folk as dressing like Coco the clown. If Dave wants to dress like that then good luck to him, but he is a tiny minority. Most people don't wear the same clothes as they did when they were fifteen. 3
Shinehead Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 The general theme of the ad is fairly good in me opinion , the enthusiasm for the music and dancing comes through but why as many others have said does the stupid fashion sense of the 70s have to take the leading role giving the impression that everyone who likes NS dresses like this. 1
Amsterdam Russ Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 What I actually asked was why the media always try and depict N. Soul folk as dressing like Coco the clown. If Dave wants to dress like that then good luck to him, but he is a tiny minority. Most people don't wear the same clothes as they did when they were fifteen. When it comes to Nostalgia cults, most participants want to wear what their mums and their dads wore when they were 15! And, whether people on here or elsewhere like it or not, the reality is the Northern Soul scene is also partly a Nostalgia cult. 3
