You need to pop over to Nottingham, trentside this Saturday mate. I'll cheer you up Trev ;)

Whats wrong with it   FFS.

If you have to ask you wouldnt understand.

Its about a scene and dress sense most left behind in the 70,s.

i get more and more depressed every day.The commercialism first time around was bad enough.

If it werent for the friends iv made i would twat this dysfunctional scene right off.

Record collection for sale very soon.  :(

Like I said earlier, the trousers aren't as bad as the flared skirts, ankle socks, ribbons and tattoos that the women wear. Where the hell did that look come from? And where do the flat caps come from? The only people who wore them in the seventies were our dads.

I thought it was a trailer for the next episode of Peaky Blinders until I realised I was watching ITV.

I love this site but god there are some snobs on here

Its not being snobbish Ted - Its about making a real f*cking mockery of the scene.

Wonder if we can eat Lidl version of Shredded wheat or are they bootlegs - Ha HA - OSO ( Original Shreddies only)

The whole thing is friggin joke and the guy should be whipped for even contemplating doin it!

Im now goin to start a thread called "Advert" AND ASK PEOPLE TO COME UP WITH WHAT THEY THINK THE BEST TUNE IS AGAINST AN ADVERT! Then tell me Ted if you dont think i'm being daft!

As advertisements go, it keeps you guessing about what is actually being advertised until the end captions.  Even in the extended 2 minute version, there is no mention of any high fibre breakfast cereal.  Expect future events to be invaded by advertising executives.  I reckon Johnson & Johnson would be interested in the alternative use of one of their products.  Failing that, it's about time a new Shake n Vac advert hit our screens.

NO TALC STEVE....WE'RE BRITISH!!......or shall we all have a lovely argument about this contentious subject on here as well???...  :dash2:  :boxing:

Deny all knowledge, I remember being 18 and doing my face training - on a monday morning the old colliers would ask  me what I'd been up to at the weekend…… After a bit i got wise and just said I'd been to the local for a pint.

Northern soul? Ive no idea what you're talking about………..

Each to their Own.It is still a free country. I've had mine have you had yours.

This is not the end of the World. There are still the variety boxes plenty of choice there if your fed up with shreddied wheat. A little bit of escapism never harmed anyone.Life,s to short.

On a lighter note Aldi and Liddle do a Bootleg Shreddied wheat I beleive its a lot cheaper than John Manship,s and it's got its own label.   Mick L

Wonder if it'll be jumping on the Northern Soul cereal bandwagon. If it does, it might be wise to change its name to shredded credibility.

Free lave the lad alone Dave and his familly and freinds travell all over the country to nighters etc, they are living the dream ,and keeping the faith. The soul police want to take a look at themselves?..do they own the scene?, people are moaning about the dress sense ,yet it's ok to talk and promote drugs on the scene. I'd rather see someone in retro gear than taking gear. Just my opinion ktf

Cheers, Bud, but it was a joke! Some people have no sense of humour whatsoever. If you can't laugh at your collective self, ie, the scene as a comic whole, then there's little hope.

Good luck to Dave and family. They made the choice to be on telly, in an advert that uses Northern Soul to promote a high-fibre cereal. I'm sure it's been a very exciting ride for them, and I'll bet they're chuffed to bits with the outcome. I probably would be too if it were me. At the same time, I reckon Dave & Co can also see a humorous side to the whole thing. For sure they'll have mates who are giving them a right good ribbing.

There are far more important things in the world than shredded wheat, and in a week or so when the campaign's run its course we'll all move onto something else. That's life. Let's not be too serious about it.

The problem is when they're in retro clobber and on gear as well. That really is an absurd combination.

Just seen the advert on here....spoken to the chap & his son before at events....very lovely people.

I think some people on here have been quite rude about how others dress.

I say wear what you want ladies & gents.....I love very long skirts with loads of fabric, mostly Victorian.

Yes I do wear ribbons, because my hair is nearly down to my backside  & it's far too hot to dance with it down....simple!

1970's clothes looked alright in the 70's on 18 year olds.

As you get older you can not wear all the same type of clothes as when you were younger, without looking silly.

You have to start thinking does this look dignified for my age!

any suggestions?

carpet slippers,cardy & pipe?

shroud?

blazers with badges seem popular with the older generation but then again maybe that was a Wigan thing so they are out

hit will be lambrettas with mirrors next.. There are more seriouse things in life than what people wear. Iv been into the northern scene for 40years , and just lately there are loads who think the scene belongs to them, yes I'm for it being a underground scene, but it's got exploited by tv etc, and there's not a lot we can do about it now, tourists and handbaggers will put paid to that,  if the first people to discover black soul music had kept it underground there would be no us, fair play to anyone on the scene living the dream I suppose we are all in a time warp some way or another, Ktf , oh and yes I do have a lambretta, and I know it's got fc all to do with ns, lol

Why would anyone wanna grow old gracefully and look dignified when out relaxing at a soul venue?

If the general public see someone dressed in retro who gives a bugger what they think, I can't remember people caring what the non soulie population thought of the scene in the 70's so why take an interest in their views now.

Furthermore, who's gonna see soulies at night, its bloody dark out there at 5pm and venues open at about 8.30pm. The neighbours probably already know he's a soulie cos they will have heard the music playing on the car stereo.

If Dave wants to dress retro and feels comfortable in it then he should wear it, no one gets hurt. I wonder if the people having a dig are envious of a chap in his mid 50's without a weight problem and looking relatively fit.

If that advert puts 10 new faces in each venue (even if its just curiosity) this month then the promoters will be happy, its then up to the DJ's to play great sets and capture the new audience.

WELL SAID,  although the clothing isn't for me right now, I thought it was a great ad. and it has had such an impact that I reckon the guy who made it will get a pay rise..............  coz everyone is talking about it. isn't that what marketing is all about. flippin well done id say and I bet lots of other guys are sitting in their offices thinking "I wish id thought of that"

Only the music wins here, the rest is about as far away from 'the' scene that one can get. The iconic references dont in any way remind my of my last 44 years of heavy scene use, its fiction of the worst kind-----It needs pulling for deformation of character.

I like shredded wheat though!

I'm not going to knock it.... I can't!

They are dancing, smiling and enjoying the buzz. It lifts me watching it, regardless of the product it's promoting!

A nice bit of footage to share with the family and future grandchildren and maybe a nice bit of wedge to buy a record or 2 also?

I hate Shredded Wheat and the clothing aint my thing but I love smiles and I love to watch people enjoying themselves on the floor..... even if it's just for the camera.  :D

So... We are all talking about it?

Advertisers have done their job well then!!

Dignified? Is it more dignified to wander around venues stumbling, mumbling drunk, stopping only on the odd occasion to nod in appreciation as the next unheard of dirge hits the decks, or to get out and enjoy yourself dancing, like we all used to? For me it's the latter. I don't wear the clobbed, but don't hAve an aneurysm when I see someone who does :-)

It would have been more fun to have someone on who has been on the scene without a break looking casual….His son is a lazy fat, spotty, unfit twat playing his play station all night long almost every day !!!

Right here is a story line !!!!

Dad goes out since donkey years enjoying the music !!!

You see him dancing, travelling and talking about his love of the music, people and so on !!!! He comes back at 9 in the morning, looking good and fit after an allnighter.

You see an alarm clock just going past 9 o’clock in the morning !!!

Knock Knock on the door !!

Cut

His son plays computer games all night long eating tons of junk looking real tired in the morning.

He opens the door, Dad is having his healthy fix in the morning in the Kitchen sitting in front of his tired looking son. They do not getting on tooo well !!!

He asks him you want some wheat ??? The son says nooooo, thanks !!!

The dad say’s `` You should try it !!!!!

The son thinks about it …..

Cut

6 months later….

Son and dad having a really good time together both looking fit, dancing away doing acrobatics!!

They are coming back together from an allnighter, they sit down and having some shredded wheat together in the kitchen !!!!

They laugh together….love each other and having a good time…..

BIG ADVERTISING VOICE OVER

Shredded Wheat Is good for the heart (being fit) & good for the Soul (relation ship dad & son)

Cut…

in black and white a very short clip of…

Son & Dad having a line of speed together at the allnighter

Don't think Saatchi & Saatchi will be calling anytime soon.

was at Worcester niter when they filmed the dance scenes..... we thought it was a Weetabix ad and can remember people thinkin wtf?

happy people dancing in the ad..we weren't happy though with the bloody lights on till 10 and nobody else allowed to dance...or maybe just those without baggy trousers

top set by Jordan later though

ironically..if that's the right word after filming this wonderful scene I understand there was an assault outside that night and so the next niters off

here are...

The 30-second ad, which is called "soul man", was created by McCann London and breaks today on ITV during an episode of Coronation Street. A two-minute version of the ad will also run online.

The spot opens with a husband and father from Shrewsbury called Dave, who also narrates the spot. Dave had to give up his great love — the early Northern Soul scene — when he had a family but has now thrown himself back into the lifestyle, and the dancing.

Not to mention the same wardrobe he had in the 70`s ))

The irony.. A breakfast cerial for the folk who dont eat or sleep till Tuesday   :hatsoff2:

Hi Stevie

And I thought shredded wheat had vitamins and folic acid, but didn't know its got Irony as well. I might get a box if they can keep me going without sleep until Tuesday cos they would be the perfect product for the weekenders...... Do you get a free toolkit to break into the local pharmacy for the sweetner supplement ?

I hope someone reminds Pontins to get plenty in for March event; I wonder if RS and KR will be on commission for selling signed boxes of SW at Prestatyn?

I've just caught up with this ad after a few days of the thread - first time watched both versions just now.

Music we love, friends there for the same reason you are.

Actually still going out and sometimes making the effort to look smart, be retro or different to the mainstream.

The feeling you or I get when on ANY dance floor with the tunes we love blasting out.

All I can say is - FFS take it all for what it is and just enjoy life.

Politics of the scene just wear you down so yes have an opinion but so what - bags, vests, 70's clobber - so fkn what !

KFC, Lucozade, Shredded Wheat, SAGA ads, along with the never ending corporate style arranged big do's, reissues vinyl and Amazon (no corporation tax paid) CD cos it's the cheapest and free post !

Well they are all here and the consumer is part of it - that's us by the way.

As they used to say on the t-shirts in the 80's - FK ART LET'S DANCE - well - FK AD'S LET'S DANCE !

Sermon over.

ps -

One local dayer type do I attend is usually fkd 2 hours after opening by mainstream knackers dancing with their drinks.

Others just stand and gawp at the 'soulie types' dancing.

If only it was full of Shredded Wheaters it would be class !

Yet more commercialization of the Northern Soul scene!!

This is what happens when people decide to Use it, to make money or fame for themselves!

I knew that film would just end up making a mockery of the whole thing again!

I don't think the film was a bad representation, certainly it had a good sound track.

People will moan about the drugs in it, but it's a scene that wouldn't have existed with out them.

Granted, I didn't go to Wigan, or any where else for that matter.

Still, that's only my opinion and what I thought it would've been like in the 70's.

Posted

Most folk on the scene these days don't wear that stupid get up.

I wouldn't mind if it was a good look back in the day but lets be right, looking like Coco the Clown was never a look that would go down in history as cool.

Rather than promote the scene, which should be about the music, these bell ends just paint us all with the same brush making us look foolish to the outside world and to be honest it's bloody embarassing.

Smart but casual with leather soled shoes for dancing!

I used to wear tailor made 40" bags about 38 years ago at Wigan because it was the height of Northern Soul fashion.

We were not copying anyone, that was the fashion!

Why after all these years of going to Northern Soul allnighters, would I want to dress like that again?
