Popular Post Tfk Posted December 31, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 31, 2014 (edited) "Soul Power "pack on and were all set for a high octane weekend !!! Attached one of those fine ingredients that actually made our thousands of journeys up and down the country to live the nightlife essential and oh so exciting ( now forget ya modern day Internet and CD/downloads ) the only way back then to hear sneak previews of what musically was being tipped for bigger things was either a quick 2 minute blast down the phone line or a "C90 cassette " shoved in ya hand of all the latest tips/ sounds !!! Was just sifting through a load of dusty old 45s that I had forgotton all about (pesky little things them 45s ) and found this (see below) stuffed in the back of one of the record sleeves.... One of Rob "Lord" Marriotts essential C90 cassette playlists . Not sure of the Circa of this ? Any ideas So dig this !!! or as Rob used to say "Right on !! Youth " tfk Edited January 10, 2015 by tfk 16
KevH Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Bloody hell Youth, some good stuff there.!! Didn't know Malcolm Dodds was one of Rob's. 1
Billy Jo Jim Bob Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 I used to go to Rob's soul night in Mansfield and this was his standard playlist. From memory he (or someone around him) did some sort of LP with some of these tunes on. It was a plain label thing I'm sure. Perhaps someone can confirm ? Also I have a copy of Malcolm Dodds on Paramount from Robs tape if anyone is interested @ £5....bargin 2
Jim Ohara Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Nice one youth - had a couple of tapes like this from rob - loved the handwriting - and obviously some great tunes 1

Popular Post Gilly Posted December 31, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 31, 2014 Still have some tapes that Rob had done for me, I must look them out. When you look back you have to say how much ahead he was, how much vision, and when he used to DJ how many dance floors he cleared and to me is seen as a result because you know in a few years time those people will catch up with you and your prophesy 7

I don't remember any LP with these tracks on, he did do the Motown one which had On The Outside Looking In which was one of Rob's current plays at the time. I put two or three of Rob's tapes on mix cloud, great listening. You should send this one down Andy so I can digitise.

Evening Tony hope your well - what a find 3 x AA In Chicago , it was defo a case of he or she who lasted the longest got the best records ... ha ha - that made me smile re Rob and the Sandy Golden 45? ( i have another tale to tell re this 45 but will save that for another day) was just thinking about one Sunday morning back then after a night out at 100 Oxford Street and I had kindly agreed lol **** with Rob to drop in at Kebs place ( in Holloway I think? ) to pick a record up ( Rob had been on a wild spree in the 100 club and had a pile of acetates that he'd just aquired ) so we jump a taxi and arrive at Kebs place ... On arrival our Rob then realises he's mislaid his new acetates ??? Youth we need to get back to the 100 club av lost my acetates - so we jump another taxi straight back to Oxford Street and there they are ' the acetates stood upright on the pavement outside the 100 club were Rob had put them down whilst he had a light up !!!! That was close youth !!! .... Great times great fun, loads of energy and enthusiasm !!! Never a dull moment and no stone (or records) were left unturned when out and about in town with Rob "The Lord " Marriott ... And would love to do it all over again !!! Tony Smith Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Wasn't Butch still playing it covered as DC Blossoms in the late 90s? In a word no, at least not late 90's, it was sold to Rob still c/u, I certainly never uncovered it, although there was another copy knocking about in London that had come out of Randy Cozens collection can't remember where that went. 1
Markw Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Cheers Tony. I think I am correct in saying it was covered as DC Blossoms though? And Butch has been on this very site stating that AA was one of his discoveries. I have a CD made from a tape (recorded by the late Paul Fisher from South Wales) of a Butch set at the 100 Club circa 1997 where he plays it, though he doesn't announce it; so it maybe had been uncovered by then? 1

I have Butch on a live recording playing Anita Anderson, would be mid 90's 100 Club, it might be on my mix cloud page.
Driveller Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Anita Anderson was part of the first set of records that Butch played regularly when he first got his 100 Club residency, along with things like "You Ain't Got A Chance", "Absent Minded Lover", That's When You Know You're In Love" and Jessie James on Shirley (unless that last one was a little bit later). I believe that places it around 1990/91, though at the moment I can't remember exactly when Butch started playing at the 100 Club; if anyone can be more precise about that date, then that's the date we first started hearing Anita Anderson. Of course he may have already played it elsewhere on an ad-hoc/guest spot basis, but I can definitely confirm that it's been around as a regular play for at least as long as Butch has been a 100 Club resident. All the best, Nick

All the best, Nick Butch was playing Jesse James in 86/87 along with most if not all that you list Nick. He uncovered Jesse James at a Blackburn Christmas nighter if I remember rightly. Butch was pretty much everywhere from 86 onwards and he's been top of the tree ever since. 1
Driveller Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Cheers, Chalky, I rather suspected they'd been part of Butch's set prior to the 100 Club, but couldn't state which ones for sure as I hadn't really heard him prior to this - certainly to have a full set of the sort he started at the 100 Club with he would have had most if not all of them for a while. The Jesse James I was confused about because I have a memory of noticing it as an 'addition' to his set sometime not long into the residency, but from what you say it may just have been on a 'break' when he started there and he dropped it in again later on. Could be I'm just completely wrong about it and it was there all along. I'm sure I've got some tapes of the 100 Club from about that time, so maybe I can go back and check - not sure where they'd be, though! The other ones I mention, I'm definite about being in the 100 Club set from the start, and I imagine were things he regularly played prior to that. All the best, Nick 1
Markw Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Well Jesse James on Shirley and that Temptones c/u are also on the same tape from '97 and I recall he was still dropping them into sets 4 or 5 years later at least.
Chalky Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Jsse James was his Arcades cover up during the 80's, used to love it alongside Tommy Ridgely. 1

Popular Post Philt Posted January 3, 2015 Popular Post Posted January 3, 2015 (edited) When people ask what's the difference between 'northern soul' and "that rare shit you're into" they obviously miss the point but I'm always at a bit of a loss as to how to explain it anyway, and usually opt for "it just sounds different somehow." Rob's taste and willingness to always push on encapsulates it perfectly; always proper 'all nighter' tackle if you know what i mean. Legend Edited January 3, 2015 by PhilT 5
