Retford Broken Wheel Club Alldayers

Does anyone out there remember the Broken Wheel, Retford, Notts, soul nights and alldayers in the mid seventies? The lifespan of this event was short but I thought very sweet. The organisers were Eddy Law and his wife Pat who became great friends of mine at the time and I think it was a great shame that this event was so short lived ( just two or three nights I think and a couple of alldayers) The venue was an old warehouse or something right next to the canal, that was indeed very broken! I understood from Eddy and Pat that they had frequented this club in the late sixties as a start to the night before going on to the twisted wheel in manchester. This mid 70s venue was very quickly well attended by soul fans from all over country and especially attended I remember by the newark soul crowd. Upstairs was a seating area and then you went down some steep old wooden stairs to the dancefloor, small but atmospheric ( or was that the damp from the canal?) The ceiling was very low and had oak beams running across and I remember A very tall Retford chap called big John who had to shuffle from one side of the dancefloor to the other in between the beams so that he didnt bang his head! I also remember a couple of Retford girls who went to the first alldayer agog at all the soul fans, and went to the second alldayer with brand new holdalls stuffed with clothes and covered with soul badges from places they had never been to so they didnt feel left out! Eddy Law wacked out a fair sum on the Djs who included John Vincent ,Kev Roberts and other top names.

Yes I remember, Roger, but you spelled my name wrong it is Eddie not Eddy. The Broken Wheel was the first of my ventures into promotion and NS, I also used to DJ on Sunday nights at the little club down by the river in Retford belonging to the Aquarius club in Lincoln; that long ago I cant even remember the name. My next venture was the Wakefield unity hall all - nighters, this was a great venue and used to get around 1,000 people. I think I charged about a pound entrance fee which was a little cheap those days, but it wasn't about the money but the music. I remember getting back home to Retford one Sunday morning and seeing with horror a front page article about 'Rat Poison pills sold at all night concert in Wakefield' splashed on the front page of The News Of The World newspaper. It turned out they caught someone outside with some Warfarin tabs. The town council let me have one more after that and I played the last record of the night with the curtains slowly closing, "It's all over" great sound sad event, but hey, life goes on. Sadly Pat and I split after 15 years of marriage and I am now on wife number 3 and living in Singapore, a little island off the tip of malaysia; even here there are guy's who still love NS and still buy the vinyl although I must admit my tastes have broadened over the years. I still have thousands of sounds on my I-Pod and on occasion, normally after a session on the beer, will break it out and dance around my condo like I was eighteen again; not bad for 56! Incidentally in your comments you mentioned the Twisted Wheel but we also used to go to The Mojo in Sheffield run by Pete Stringfellow who later come to be known world wide as the King of Clubs; I once tried to call him at Stringfellows in London for VIP tickets to impress my 2cnd wife on our anniversary only to be told to 'Buggar Off', he he! Other places, Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca highland room, Samantha's, Jeez I could go on and on...Great days and we had a great time. The world seemed safer then, fighting was mostly once or twice a year and limited to Mods and Rockers at places like Skeggie or Brighton. Our genre was our badge and cameradie wherever nighter or dayer we decided to go. Dave Godin once said to me that Northern Soul was another form of rebellion; not sure if he was right, but it sure felt right at the time. Anyone out there with copies of Black Music magazine with my articles inside?? Wow is that post 2006 Roger? I am a bit late then!

Being local (Warsop near Mansfield before moving to Worksop) it was on my doorstep and I think I went twice, again if you'd asked me I though these ran more than the 3 times mentioned. They were really good. The original Broken Wheel always had an air of "Mystique" about it being one of the original Mod venues, but I think this was a different venue with the same name.

Hi Eddy, I was a very young kid, but contacted you several times on the 'phone maybe early eighties, re copies of Blues & Soul and records you were selling. I seem to recall you telling me some great tales of the early scene! (nuff said !)

Nice to hear you are still around and keeping an eye on things, have you seen Malc Burton is a member on here ?

I don't know if you get back to Retford at all, but "The Broken Wheel" name is alive and well in yet another location, a pub on the cross roads where you turn for North Leverton.

That was me again, Eddie Law, I opened a record shop on Albert Road next to a small lane that led down to the canal and the Broken Wheel. The sounds I picked up in job lots from the States and had some fantastic bargains. I once found a white demo copy of the isley brothers 'pay your dues' amongst them. Never made any money at it but again I had a great time and met some wonderful people. You guy's have got me thinking again about the whole scene as it was and looking around the internet I am surprised to see how big it is again! I lost touch with my sisters in Burnley but it now looks as though a PI has found them so I may make a trip back to Burnley this year, anyone care to give me some ideas where to go to hear some good Northern Soul in Burnley??

Thanks for your reply, I actually just replied to '45Cellar' a bit further down before seeing your mail. To be honest with you I fail to remember your calls but that is probably down to being an 'old git' now he he!

I know North Leverton having worked at both West Burton and Cottam back in the days, but can't remember the pub you refer to? I am amazed at how big the scene still is and if you read my earlier post I am intending visiting the UK this year and would love to go a couple of venues, any suggestions greatly appreciated. You are quite right with The " Drifters " / Invitations connection , Sean ........

As you are well aware , there were countless imitations of such notable groups such as The Drifters , Isley Brothers etc. , and artists , such as Inez and Charlie Foxx , Arthur Conley . Lee Dorsey , doing " the rounds " in clubs in the late 60s and early 70s : what was not general knowlwdge at the time , was that what we would now call " tribute " acts , were notable / creditable name groups and singers in their own right ........

I had seen one particular " Drifters " several times at The Bin Lid in Dewsbury , and once at The Tinned Chicken , in Castleford ; It was not until many years later , that I found out that they really were The Invitaions .......

I am not certain , but I seem to recall that The Incredibles also toured as The Drifters ........

It is very possible that Billy Stewart played the BW : If he did , I am sure it will have been on the same night that he played The Attic in Doncaster ( New Years' Eve . 1969 ) , which was shortly before he died , when the car he was driving ( along with three members of his band ) , plunged into the Neuse River , in Selma , North Carolina , on January 17th 1970 .......

You were subjected to Roy C only doing " SW " three times ? - you were lucky : he did the stated opus SEVEN times at

(& as I had only recently sold my copy) it sort of stuck in my mind.

I also remember seeing a few Champion White DEMO's of Touch Of Venus in your shop.

Didn't you move premises away from the Canal at one point.

OK eddie' there's an all nighter running in Burnley at the moment, so you should have a great time , also plenty of "do's" within spitting distance, Rolls Royce at Barnoldswick, Bury Town Hall

the greaystone near old trafford, plenty to go to and the Twisted wheel also runs several times a month, but with classic wheel sounds on the last friday --

I live in Retford, the old place is still there but sitting derelict - it was a bike repair shop up to about five years ago. They are always talked about in the local area, it would make a fantastic venue, for someone with a lot of money... The new pub is a punk/goth hangout, not a soul place.

Retford soul nights are now held at the masonic hall next to the canal, about 100 metres away!!!

can never get any info on them though (must try and learn that handshake!)

hi several of us from sheffield used to go to the broken wheel to meet up with knocker ,little paul beard ,haddock ,smiggsy and from there go to the twisted wheel and night owl in leicester,in 1967-1968 as stringfellows mojo had gone hippy/flowerpower and lost its allnight licence

Never went to the broken wheel don't know why cos it's not far from us in Chesterfield ??

fook sake back street blueys sold by the king brothers had totally forgotten about the big scare stories around at the timeno skf printed on em what were those spanish pills called that made an appearance at wigan/samanthasa few years later?

It was about 77/78 that I can remember a big influx of the totally mad backstreet bluies they made yer eyes shake legs wobble and slurred yer speech for about 5 /10 mins the you were ok just speed rush after that allegedly !!!!

I remember taking some on the way to wigan casino...when I got out of the car I went all wobbly and dizzy and fell onto the car bonnet

Remember it well,    it had a low ceiling,  very hot ,  must have enjoyed it so much, that I can remember staying until the end and ended up having to thumb it home with two of the Mansfield lads .. Olly and Barky.  We walked most of the way until the police eventually picked us up at ollerton

I put this post on originaly i'm Roger Metcalf....I remember DJ Derek Sheldon from Rotherham Djing at one of the  soulnights...He was smashed out his head on gear and while Djing was jumping down onto the dancefloor to dance and making the records jump at the same time lol

Yes, I remember visiting the "Broken Wheel" at Rteford. It was by the canal, and we travelled on the train from Lincoln, usually on a saturday night.

Getting home at 2.00am was a problem, but there was always someone going our way.  The wheel was brilliant! it was an old warehouse, and the walls were wet with perspiration, or something.  I remember seeing "Marv Johnson" there, but can't remember whether it was a night time, or all dayer.  Any other Lincoln Mods out there recall those days ?

that was it in the 60s then Tony..I was on about it in the mid 70s....apparantly after a night there in the sixties they would go on to the twisted wheel later

I worked for Basketdraws Dist Council from the late 70's thru till 88 ... when did the alldayers finish & when did the club close ??

I was always in Retford during those times (79-88), just up the road usually (around the Market Place area).

The above map is off google ... unfortunately their STREET VIEW facility only works for roads one of their cars has driven down, so with the Broken Wheel fronting onto the canal, you can't get a piccy of the old building off there  (& Bing Maps have given up on their Birds Eye facility).
