Ian Dewhirst
Sorry Ian No way. Shawn Robinson was never played at the Torch. Are you sure Kev? I seem to remember this being an oldie long before Wigan. Plus I can remember the Cleckheaton lads singing it's praises after a Saturday at the Torch. Just had a quick search around and I'm not the only one who had this down as the Torch. Who had it first I wonder......? Ian D Link to comment Social source share

Ian D I went to The Casino from early days...late 73/early 74 and certainly knew Shawn Robinson...maybe it was more of a local North West play encouraged by plays at Va-Va's.....I used to go to a place in Burscough called the football club...SoulSpinners 4 as DJs then....maybe as early as 72 and pretty sure it was played there Link to comment Social source share

I have a feeling Ian L also had it at the Mecca around the same time. Deffo not Torch though. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Goldsoul
Kev,are you sure abouv Shawn Robinson not being played at the Torch? I seem to remember it being listed in VaVa adverts,so that pre-dates it for Wigan at least SteveSteve- It was in the Va Vas ads. See my response to Ian D. But that was after the Torch had closed. I met Richard in the late Summer of 73 at Va Vas and heard it then. When I reccomended him to Russ, the Casino hired him in the Autumn of 73. Shawn R was one of his plays. By then, others had it and the track started to pick up pace. Edited December 29, 2014 by The Golden 101 1 Link to comment Social source share
SHEFFSOUL
Shawn Robinson was played way further back, it was reviewed by Dave Godin in Black Music in 1974, it was played at Wigan not long after by all the dj's, until it got booted in mid 1977. a VA VA fave.. SHEFFSOUL
Mr Manship in his latest auction write up, rambles on about Sam Moultrie "I'll Always Love You" being a Cleethorpes record. I was talking to an early Wigan Casino member the other day and he said it was played early days in Wigan before 1975!? in NME back in 1973 i think..Ian Levine lists SM as one of his top plays... Stateside
Seem to remember the instrumental of "Lady Marmalade" by Nanette Workman being played around 1974/75 on Pacha, although I might have heard it at the Mecca. Late 73 definitely! Thelma Houston- I ain't going nowhere Baby Washington I've got it bad Fantastic Johnny C - Don't depend on me Drifters - You gotta pay your dues Herb Ward - Honest to Goodness Teen Turbans - We need to be loved Montclairs - I need you more than ever Pointer Sisters - Send him back Donald Austin - You want it you got it Just some of the less regular ones that were played in the early years to my recollection. Thelma Houstons version was played very early on....73, well before Jnr Walker. Just played it off the album and still sounds great! I played that and Momma`s Gone at Ramsbottom C.C a while back and hardly anyone knew them. Edited December 30, 2014 by Guest Link to comment Social source share
