Zoomsoulblue Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Just watching Hawaii five O - didn't realise how fast the theme tune was / instrumental Was the vocal you can count on me at the same speed / vocal over the instrumental - could we really dance that fast or was it the speed telling us - happy xmas 1
Steve G Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Sammy Davis was never popular - a flash in the pan, played by a few for a couple of weeks that's all. Merry Xmas.
Jim G Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 The Ventures version was played a lot back in the day and is the correct theme tune to the show. From memory it was Soul Sam who played it for a joke but it took off and we danced to it!
Ted Massey Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 remember playing that Sammy Davis at a scooter and skin head do in the 80's and almost every one was sitting down on the dance floor pretending they were in a canoe 3

Mind you I bet it worked well with your Hwaiian shirt ! 3

pow wow mik Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 The version on the tv show is by Mort Stevens, or the lp described as the 'original tv soundtrack' is. Got some nice tracks on it too. Mort was sammy D's arranger and band leader, which is probably how he came to do a version of it. i love it, proper guilty pleasure! 1
Ted Massey Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 The Mort Stevens is also on a Capitol Uk 45

Amsterdam Russ Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Brian Rae wasn"t it ? Or maybe Chris King ? Seem to remember hearing it. @ Brum Locarno dayers. Cheers Paul Quite a find as a Dutch release, especially with the rare picture sleeve.
Winsford Soul Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Just watching Hawaii five O - didn't realise how fast the theme tune was / instrumental Was the vocal you can count on me at the same speed / vocal over the instrumental - could we really dance that fast or was it the speed telling us - happy xmas Remember a version by chaquito that was popular at Wigan. Mellorful Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 A couple of years ago Sammy Davis track was played at Sidac (St Helens soul club) and about four people danced to it including myself. Bloody hell its fast, stayed with the beat but by the end of the tune I was out of breath and in needed an oxygen tent. I should remember that I'm not 18 any more, and 'Sammy Davis- you can count on me' is a cardiac hosptal tune and needs to carry a health warning. 1
Steve G Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 A epidemic then Steve St Albans allnighter I heard it at - it was at the Fire Station there - fell off me perch when I heard it. Ral Donner the same night -v bad times…. 3
Louise Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 St Albans allnighter I heard it at - it was at the Fire Station there - fell off me perch when I heard it. Ral Donner the same night -v bad times…. The common denominator between the two venue's being Cockney Mick (Webb) perhaps ? Dave 1
Godzilla Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 The version on the tv show is by Mort Stevens, or the lp described as the 'original tv soundtrack' is. Got some nice tracks on it too. Mort was sammy D's arranger and band leader, which is probably how he came to do a version of it. i love it, proper guilty pleasure! No guilt for me. It's frequently cited by embarrassed Northern Soul fans as shite piece of music, when clearly it's a brilliant theme tune, albeit not remotely related to soul music. Mort Stevens also did the Police Woman theme. Another bit of required watching in our home in the mid 70s 2
Guest johnny hart Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Viva Sammy Davis! Great Tune.Lest we Forget;in the early 60s,when playing the Sands in Vegas, although a member of the esteemed "Rat Pack"[sinatra ,Martin etc] Sammy was only allowed entrance via the kitchen,a fate suffered by early Motown Reviews . Feliz Navid!
Steve G Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I think on balance the "Theme from police story" by the Pat Williams Orchestra was better big spin for Russ for a few weeks c.77/78. 2

From memory it was Soul Sam who played it for a joke but it took off and we danced to it! It was a smash hit on pop stations all over USA and Canada. 1
