Popular Post Soulboyslim Posted December 22, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 22, 2014 (edited) Rafa Club 6th December 2014 — Special guest DJ’s John Parker — (York soul club) and Davy Mason (Gateshead) This the last soul night at the Rafa club in 2014 and what better way to end the year than with 2 fantastic rare soul dj’s in John and Davy. We were so pleased that John and Davy could make it and it’s John’s 3rd appearance in the last 2 years which is testament to our faith in him delivering the goods as a rare northern soul DJ. John and wife Carol arrived really early (approx 7.30pm) and a Carol was first up on the floor to Ian’s set (Spiedels and Bob & Fred) which set the tone for the night. A good crowd supporting John and Davy with people from as far as Clitheroe and Burnley plus the usual soul fans from Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe. Ian Shoulder first up on the decks with : Ian shoulder Parliaments — Heart Trouble Volumes — One way lover Steve Mancha — Did my baby call Four Thoughts — Kisses and Roses Ronn Matlock — Best of me Syl Johnson — Do you know what love is Chi-Lites — She’s mine Larry Atkins — Ain’t that love enough McKinley Mitchel — No love Irma and the Fascinators — Lost Love Insights — I need your loneliness Hy- Tones — Bigger and better Alex Brown — I’m not responsible Spiedels — Dream Girl Bob and Fred — I’ll be on my way Louis Paul — The change will do you good Frankie and the Damons — The man from soul Bobby James — I really love you Willie Mason — Why —( Nat Hall version played later on too, so if you prefer one or the other you got it all) Kell Osbourne — Quick sand Malcolm Hayes — I gotta be with you Kev Cowey returned to the fold after many missed months and we were glad to see him spinning the records again - Continental Four — The way I love you Montclairs — Hey You Johnny and the Expressions — Shy girl Derek Martin — If you go Shirley and the soul sisters — What more (can anyone want) Shirley Scott lead vocals Sugar & the Spices — You gotta have faith Four Voices — Your love is getting stronger Mikki Farrow — Could it be Fantastic Four — Live up to what she thinks Al Gadiner — Sweet baby Sandra Stephens — If you really love me Ella Woods — I need your love Guitar Ray — Gonna wreck my life The Sparkels — Try love Monique — If you love me Next up is Paul Ackley with a quick half hour of tempting soul: Charlene and the soul Serenaders — Can you win — Volt Vondells — Hey Girl — Airtown Admirations — You left me — Peaches Magnetics — I have a girl — Ra-Sel Johnny Hampton — Not my girl — Dottys Sir Joe — Nobody beats my love — Rujac Eddie Daniels — Is he better than me — Boots Billy Byrd — Lost in the crowd — Scream Ramona Collins — You’ve been cheating — Quality Groovettes — Think it over — Reness The Sweets — Something ‘bout my baby — Soultown James Lately — Love, friends and money — Temple Hreman Lewis — Who’s kissing you tonight — Stone Blue Tommy and the Derby’s — Don’t play the role - Swing That’s got things ticking along nicely with people filling the floor too, first main guest DJ in the shape of Davy Mason and he kicks his set off with: Harold Burrage — I;ll take one — Sue (UK) Willie Jones — Where’s my money — Peacock Young Holt Ltd — Ain’t there something money can’t Buy — Brunswick Little Joe Hinton — Let’s start a romance — Arvee Soulful Twins — Can’t let you go — Sable (Other version played later on too) The Cheers — Take me to paradise — Okeh Cecil Washington — I don’t like to lose — Prophonics (Old joe Matthews cover up from Wigan and apart from the “Rose Valentine — Searling cover up” it was one of the longest standing cover ups of it’s time). Lots of his set is on the free cd which in mind was one of the best cd's I've done this year, John Parker adding to the cd made it a joy to listen too. It was getting late and to give John a rest we had Paul Ackley finish off but John was having none of it so they double decked ‘till the end of the night, both dj’s playing off one another to perfection, each the perfect foil for each other ...... Guess who played what, answers on a post card to me and you get a free entrance to the club in February 2015) Magnetics — Lady in Green — Bonnie (One of my all time favourite Wigan Casino records, oooohhhhh.... Thanks Dave, and as you say York soul club delivers exactly the same as the Rafa soul club so let's all support it more.
