Hitsville Chalky
I'm going back to about 1999 mate when they were still cut on proper acetates...plus I got it wrong, it wasn't Spellbound, it was actually Spaceland! I had spaceland too ..with hankey pankey on the other side Link to comment Social source share
Andybellwood
Does anyone play out 'Spellbound' from the Grapevine Lp ? Poor mastering/sound quality imo . 'Detroit' Lp cut much better . Link to comment Social source share
Pete S
Does anyone play out 'Spellbound' from the Grapevine Lp ? Poor mastering/sound quality imo . 'Detroit' Lp cut much better . It's not that it's poor, it's just that to cram on 10 tracks per side, the sound gets quieter and quieter, so everything on that album is at a low volume. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Patto
Gonna resurect this thread due to my love of the track.I have the Grapevine LP with Spellbound on, but agree with Andy that the mastering is poor.Would love to play it out and would like to know if the recent first 45 release is ok to play at an OVO event. Is it legit and acceptable or is it a case of having to spin the first album release.Have any DJs spun the recent 45 and is it good sound quality. Tomangoes
She sung it live at the Detroit gig last October..........along with SIIS. Unless you get discs cut from the Master tapes, surely grapevine is good, LP or single. Ed Link to comment Social source share

Patto
The feedback im getting is thatThe original grapevine LP release is the only acceptable way to play it at an OV night.Real shame about the sound quality if i play it you have to mess about with gain and bass programming on mixer to get half descent results.Tragic that a 45 wasnt put out at the time Link to comment Social source share

Totally agree with you Chalky, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, i play it on the decks at venues as original vinyl and it goes down a treat, the sound quality is excellent. Hope that answers your question Patto, it's okay to play it mate, it is an original 45 release,LP's are not singles. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Patto
The thing is guys from an OVO standpoint the Original is on the LP .The 45 is some 40 years later. So if the venue is OVO then regardless of 45 or LP it has to be its first legit vinyl release.Rightly or wrongly this is how many view it . I wasn't having a go at you mate. I like yourself DJ, ed at many nighters all over the country and only ever played out original vinyl because I was fortunate enough to be able to afford them and that's how I was brought up on the nighter scene. I was just trying to lighten up the thread. I personally don't care at certain soul nights whatever the format. Others for example I wouldn't even question the integrity of the promoters or Djs as to the format Steve Link to comment Social source share

So by the same token you can’t play any release on a 45 released 30/40 years after its original recording date? It is the original release in a 45, all dues paid. Some need to take their heads out of their arses before they disappear up it completely. they make the rules up as they go along half of em, so long as it suits them Edited February 2, 2018 by chalky 6 Link to comment Social source share

I’m not suggesting you are. But some clearly are. Who makes up these rules and by what authority have they the right to impose them on everyone else? It is about the music but it is becoming increasingly more and more about the person, the Dj, the promoter. Most top Djs have played a cut or something what others would perceive as dodgy, it was the only way to hear the music at one time. I’ve heard some idiots come out with laws regarding no Lps (when most of the time they are the true original), no demos, no acetates etc etc. Most of us know the score and we survived for many decades without the OVO stupidity and we got by without resorting to bootlegs which ultimately is what it should be about, or by playing recent issues of records that had an original release, not depriving dancers of good music just because it doesn’t suit the release criteria of some. Dave Moore
Play it! 100% play it! It's an unreleased at the time masterpiece. There's a world of difference in my eyes to 'DJs' playing something like this and trotting out 17 dodgy reissues/bootlegs. Some of the Pied Piper stuff from Ady was originally released on CD so when the 45s were done should we not buy 'em and play 'em? Surely that can't be right? Best, Dave Link to comment Social source share

Thanks Dave if the Grapevine LP cut was good quality i would just play it from there as its the first time it appeared on Vinyl. BUT the cut is poor thats why im asking about the recent 45 Edited February 3, 2018 by Patto Link to comment Social source share

Andykempster
not directly connected but along the same lines Melba Moore - Magic Touch Original release Which came first, the LP release (May 86) or the anniversary single (Sept 86) release? based on that which is the original release and further more is it legit to play it off Horaces (1987) Ah a conundrum if ever there was one Link to comment Social source share

But some are making these rules up to justify or give themselves some kudos for the huge amounts they spend on 45s. I mean when they spend 100s on a 45 or 45s they don’t want someone spoiling their moment with a £20 Lp. 1 Link to comment Social source share

Popular Post Patto
UPDATE. after talking it over with several DJs whos opinions i respect i have made my own mind up in favour of the Soul Junction 45.I Have purchased one and can confirm its a top quality recording on nice thick vinyl. The 45 as far as i can make out is the first Deffo legit dues paid release. So thanks for all who contributed to the thread and sent PMs Its a real can of worms and over recent years several LP only tracks have come out on legit fist time on 45 releases.A few that come to mind are The Magnificent Men -- Keep on climbing Which has been released on a capitol box set series. There was the UK A B C release of Bobby Hutton-- Lend a Hand which was first on an Album many years previous.Another one i was not sure about was The Hesitations-- Thats What Love Is which was released on a Soul Series 45 after being on the Soul Superman LP of course. So from an OV point of view it can be confusing as some say its got to be the original L P and others say the Orig Legit 45 is fine to play. Im always up for learning and non of us know everything .It can be a bit intimidating asking on here and even thick skinned Hairy arsed ex Miners like me can get over sensitive .But you cant beat talking about records at the end of the day 5 Link to comment Social source share

Tomangoes
OVO? Probably up to the mid 70s, that was pretty much your only option:) Then came boots, reissues, emidiscs, etc. What about the policy at Soul in the Sun? Cd or MP3 only........ There its more about knowledge than possession... makes you think, for sure! Just saying.. Ed Link to comment Social source share
