JOE TORQUAY
Jimmy Delphs Dancing A Hole In The World Vocal / Instrumental What sets a man apart from other men, can be many things. But for the legendary Wigan Casino DJ Richard Searling it was his impeccable taste, his ability to sew a set together, ultimately building the club atmosphere as his choices are cued. But with Richard’s finely tune ear, complimented by the understanding of what record would best follow which. His reputation as not only the “Casino’s” Top Jock but the whole of Britains’ during the larger part of the 70’s. This coupled with his connection with the World’s Top-Soul-Record dealer John Anderson and his Soul Bowl record mail order was one of the major reasons Wigan Casino is remembered as the most important Northern Soul venue of all time. Even among the illustrious DJ’s that played the decks of “The Casino” - Richard stood head and shoulders above his teammates.. This listing today is one of the reasons why (it was at the time exclusive) even near 40 years on there is only a mere handful of this the original version by Jimmy Delphs are known to exist. Click the soundfile for a brief portal into Northern Soul’s Glory Years, and a hint of what Richard Sealing and John Anderson brought to a scene that could have been so different - if Tony Blackburn’s “I’ll Do Anything” album, Simon Sousan’s especially made instrumentals or Ian Levine’s Northern Soul inspired productions took hold… Fortunately, John Anderson kept finding the ultra-good and the unbelievably rare - Richard was not afraid to break them, forming a bridge into the 80s, at a very crucial time.. Jimmy Delphs a WIGAN CASINO ANTHEM and one of the very rarest 45’s ever played there.. still sounding awesome today! Vinyl has some light surface marks but plays, as you can hear superbly! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 1,367.00 Sammy Ambrose Welcome To Dreamsville C/e Monkey See-monkey Do An “100 club anthem”, an Oxford Street signature tune that Ady Croasdell championed during the 80s, as his eclectic taste ensured the 100 Club would not only evolve into a Northern Soul Shrine, but also established itself as the longest running Rare-Soul venue ever! Imagine in the 80s MOD engulfed atmosphere as Ady and team served up a smorgasbord of the Big City Sound, Latin and extravagant Northern Soul rarities during Northern Souls quieter years. Imagine descending 3 flights of stairs into a dungeon of sound to be met by the product of the students of New York’s “Brill Building” - Bob Elgin, Robert Maxwell & Lockie Edwards construct a mighty Northern Soul cornerstone… that up until the 100 Club spins had virtually been ignored by the Northern Soul DJ’s with the exception of Stafford - the unique identity of the 100 Club was starting to take shape.. So imagine owning an absolutely spotless, pristine 1965 Red & White DEMO of this highly-regarded piece of Northern Soul - it’s USA Musicor release is coveted - in this form “Dreamsville” a prestigious and highly esteemed disc. You will NOT find a finer copy…or a more impressive catalyst that dictated a change of course for Northern Soul into “Beat Ballad Heaven” or should we say “Beat Ballad Dreamsville” ? Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 642.00 Supremes Where Did Our Love Go C/w He Means The World To Me As all Old-school British Tamla Motown stalkers will confirm, the hits are hard to find in clean condition, nice flawless labels. The PROMO’s are so hard to acquire most collectors, have given up sticking to the shop release copies. Those of you brave enough to try and “complete” the British Motown releases as DEMO’s will also confirm it’s the “hits” that seldom come to market as those irresistible Red & Whites or Green & Whites. To underline this phenomenon “Baby Love” DEMO is particularly elusive and we have only had 2 copies in the last 20 years. Astonishingly “Where Did Our Love Go” Red & White we have not listed a single copy! THIS IS A DEBUT RECORD TO THIS AUCTION Really RARE and this copy is a stunning MINT - with only the lightest, hairline sleeve contact blemish or two reveals itself under strong light. Labels are flawless with the release date on centerpiece of the A side. The TMG DEMO addict will be awaiting another lifetime for a finer copy! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 201.00 Ambers Potion Of Love C/w Another Love Original very first press of this Double-helping of high-calibre Northern Soul. In fact this dual vocal-group stomper epitomizes the very essence of the NS harmony group experience. “Potion Of Love” an old “Torch” favourite, is the side that has been right up there recently highlighting the more imaginative DJ NS oldies sets after the last 4 decades and more of snoozing.. but just listen to the flipside “Another Love” is every note as good. “Potion” is currently filling floors as its renaissance spreads - but surely it is time to get onto the flipside as well.. as not may 45s offer “Two For The Price Of One” of this high standard, do they. A-side condition is Mint - flip side is Ex + and again note this is the 1967 original not the 1973 “Mercury badged” repress. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 199.00 Jaybirds Somebody Help Me C/w The Right Kind As a rather enthusiastic near 17 year old I was introduced to the Soul Club scene by way of a real MOD (who fancied my girlfriend) who took the pair of us, by Bus to the back of the Notts Forest football ground, where 3 boating club houses stood facing the river Trent. The Brit, The Boat & The Union all iconic clubs of the time. But “The Brit” was the one that played SOUL. Eagerly waiting in the throng outside, I was soon at the bottom of the stairs on my way up to Soul Heaven. To this day I can remember the sounds that changed my life, from a disenchanted Gas Fitting apprentice into a relentless vinyl hound. Al Kent - The Way You’ve Been Acting Lately. Hoagy Lands - The Next In Line. Jimmy McCracklin - The Walk. Spinners - She’s Gonna Love Me At Sundown. Jackie Edwards - I Feel So Bad I knew not one title, the DJ never said one word all night - I left The Boat awestruck… wondering where I could find this records, what the hell were they? Exactly like the schoolboy in NORTHERN SOUL THE MOVIE i was hooked, totally enamored by SOUL….and what the hell was that weird version of “Somebody Help Me” they played more than once during the evening.. I had some much to find out. Well “Somebody Help Me” was by “The Jaybirds” and was a TWISTED WHEEL anthem (and should be played in every “Wheel” tribute since) It was so rare way back then, I was laughed at in the Arkwright Street, Select-A-Disc when I asked if they had a copy. Although the other tunes I heard that night eventually made it into my collection - the Jaybirds took far longer.. UK release ONLY and never bootlegged - so imagine my delight when one did come my way maybe 6/7 years later and I got it home to discovered a potential MONSTER Northern Soul instrumental I’d never heard before on the flipside; I was overjoyed.. This copy in pristine - flawless in its birth-sleeve. Brings back so many memories not only for me - but I bet every Soulie who attended “The Brit” or “The Wheel” during the embryonic part of their own Soul journey. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 417.00 Wess Oliver Keep The Faith C/w I Confess (i'm Te Guilty One) Highly colourful but very seldom-seen 1967 Los Angeles Northern Soul backed with a fall to your knees pleading Otis-inspired Deep Soul journey. Which ever side you drop onto, it gives up uncompromising 60s Soul. We lead with Northern Soul with clout - pumping brass prompts Wess Oliver power-pack vocal which rides an avalanche of brass bubbling with Memphis influences. Then obscure arranger L. W. Mulkey pulls a masterstroke when the relentless tempo slumps into bass guitar riff, with the horns subtly changing the atmosphere - ferocious Northern Soul with classy interludes. Deep Soul aficionados who have been frustrated over the years, as it seems the NS jocks have snagged any copies that surfaced. Here a chance to own a superior Deep ballad saturated in every facet we seek in a killer ballad. Emotional, expressive beseeching deliver and yearning horns decorated by a tinkling piano.. close your eyes and this is a “Stax Studio” session with the “Big 0” at the microphone - truly formidable. Condition unlike the only other two copies I’ve witnessed this century, is absolutely flawless Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 220.00 Nicky Newarkers Woman The former Bill Harris - Fool For You - cover up has stood the test of time brilliantly - still today this inspiration fills floors, remembering for all the demand this 45 has been under for several decades now; it has never been bootlegged or reissued, adding greatly to it’s mystique & kudos. The studio marriage of Jesus Alvarez & the consistent Jerry Ross was always gonna give up something special and this 1976 New Yorker is just that. The pairing guides the group through 3 minutes of total 70s dance, managing to avoid the crasser “Disco” cliches that tainted most dance productions of the time, crafting the perfect mid-70s dancer. This is vocal-group Soulful dance at it’s most compelling.. and his copy is flawless in every way.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 513.00 Jean Carter Like One C/w That Boy Ain't No Good It’s been a Northern Soul policy for as long as I can remember for the unscrupulous when they have a flawed record to say “They Al Play Like That” The bad press for fidelity that this NS Classic has received over the last 40 years even had me believing it was mastered poorly. So I started in more recent times paying attention to every copy that has been through our hands… ALL have played flawlessly - so bangs goes the myth on this record “they all play with bad sound” although to be fair I have heard some with inferior fidelity.. more like due to NS turntable hammer that mastering. THIS COPY IS PERFECT never been on the rigorous Northern Soul circuit like many of our December listing especially aimed at Christmas present this 45 has spent it’s life in a “file only” environment. Perfect in every way - still snug inside its bith-sleeve. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 206.00 Adorables Ooh, Boy! C/w Devil In His Eyes A sparkling copy of a current Dancefloor Detonator. Motor City ladies under the spell of Richard Popcorn Wylie ooze out estrogen on every note, as a torrent of femininity spills out. This is Detroit at it’s best and on a label that consistently delivered only the finest on the era. In the early decades of Northern Soul this tune was fighting against a multitude of fine stomping Sister Sounds and the shifting sands of Northern Soul tastes and trends. In the end though pure class always breaks through big on the Northern Soul scene.. nice to see this cramming the floors in recent years - flawless Girl Group Northern Soul. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 411.00 Sherlock Holmes Standing At A Standstill Seldom seen mid-Tempo brilliance. Simplistic Northern Soul that creeps under your skin creating an itch for ownership. One of those records that is so easy on the ear and feet, you think at first this is nice, then you find it sits in your head all day. Whether it be the laid back vocal of the Baltimore, Maryland crooner or the benign horns that gently blow in the background as Sherlock glides through the session.. But this thoughtful arrangement just keeps stepping up the power, when by the ending you are bedazzled by the complimented genius of blending horns and a silky vocal to such great effect. Do not pass by, this record is seriously elusive as very few lucky owners would ever considered parting with this finely tuned treasure. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 390.00 Ward Burton Sweet Temptation Some records just lift your day - today Ward Burton has lifted mine. Not only with remarkable Northern Soul but also with its perfect condition vinyl, flawless labels and music that instantaneously makes your spirits soar. A legendary and completely elusive Northern Soul Trophy, influenced the “Charay” household, who also recorded an “impossible” Sister version by Martha Starr. The Fort Worth, Texas based company who gave us many other fabulous offerings from the Major Bill Smith and his associates. Listen to this perfectly constructed Northern Soul floor-pleaser enriched with rippling vibes, clean crisp guitar, carefully controlled and highly skilled horns, even a mandolin breaks through the arrangement, embellishing even further an already flowing-over production. All this studio activity is the perfect-landscape for Ward Burton’s silky to glide over.. This is SUPERIOR NORTHERN SOUL in flawless condition - that only the very few collectors and DJ’s can boast of ever owning. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 1,912.00 Purple Mundi Stop Hurting Me Baby C/w I Can't Understand First press of this wonderful dance tune from the Sunshine State.. Mellow intro let’s you know you’re about hear a stand-out, but your expectations could not have been so high as to expect the formidable lead vocal that was about growl his way through this floating stepper. A record that has been “wowing” the throngs who attend the selectively Soulful clubs…Soul Essence, Thorne, The Orwell, Just Soul etc. etc. As this tune is delivered at exactly the right pace for superior Soulful Dance admirers to submerge themselves into.. It’s right up there in a different league to most 70s recordings, with it being sodden-through with despair, disappointment & pain and you still need to dance to it.. .Top Drawer! The flip will delight harmony ballad fans.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 728.00 Smallwood Brothers Day Before Tomorrow C/w You Can't Reason With A Broken Heart ONLY AVAILABLE AS THE HIGHLY ELUSIVE STOCK COPY! The chase for those rare stock copies hiding the jewels of a flipside - the more common mono/stereo PROMO copy doesn’t.. Just like the highly prized Darrow Fletcher this Smallwood Brothers rarity offers up a hugely attractive Philly dancer not available as the promo copy. The totally prolific twins Melvin & Mervin Steals who first came to my notice by writing the unforgettable Four Perfections - I’m Not Strong Enough - before moving onto writing & producing some of the most meticulously crafted 70s Soul - a large proportion of it under the pseudonym “Mystro & Lyric” Atco’s lead side is already a highly regarded Sweet Soul treasure decorated with a full orchestra arrangement. Yes, utterly delicious groove .. a group-harmony masterpiece… so flip it to hear the classy dance side..that has eluded everyone. Contrasting upbeat Philly stormer featuring full vocal group harmony ion the background, the compulsory bank of strings that qualify the “Sound Of Philadelphia”. A huge production showcasing highly-honed falsetto solos, lengthy instrumental breaks and intricate vocal interchanges . Top drawer 1977 Soulful dance - back up with Sweet Soul heaven Two great sides crafted by two highly talented twins.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 157.00 Fabulous Emotions Funky Chicken C/w Number One Fool Catch this one on the “up”! Currently this typically “Philly” instrumental is grabbing some attention from both DJ’s and collectors alike, as the blending of restrained FUNK and Northern Soul works so refreshingly well, when the 60s Philly element is present. It’s been hovering around the borders of Northern Soul DJ choices for literally decades but never quite broke through to the NS big-time… but now is its time, as this Bobby Martin & Thom Bell creation instantly catches the ear, just like the very similar Cliff Nobles sessions featuring Mike Terry’s low-blow Baritone Sax did! You can hear the bari-Sax on this session but whether it is actually Mike Terry or just his influence is a matter for more thought.. Like the record company, we’ve led with the blatant dancefloor detonating instrumental side, but many will prefer the vocal-group side, as the lyrics drop into place so effortlessly. This offering is the rarely seen VINYL PROMO press - in fine clean condition. It did of course first appear on the NICO label - but the recent interest and the fact Soul Sam has just dropped a copy into his DJ box, we feel this Promo is worthy of a little speculation as to where it will rank …this time next year. May we add this VINYL PROMO was pressed from the NICO masterplate - The styrene press, seems to have been born slightly later and remastered and pressed at FRANKFORD & WAYNE. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 221.00 Link to comment Social source share

I got a mint adventurers issue off ebay less than a month ago for just over 200 including postage, so the JM one was 50% as much again. 1 Link to comment Social source share

Nice one but you had a real bargain there, especially given the condition. Competition for this title and another by the Adventurers has intensified in recent years pushing sales prices beyond the Manship #6 valuation.
