Guest son of stan Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 (edited) Any examples? To kick off, The Brooks Brothers 'Looking for a Woman' is very obviously heavily based on 'Satisfaction' by the Rolling Stones (I'd like to think its the other way round but I doubt it...) Also that Del Larks cover up 'Just You and I' Butch used to play (can't remember who it is actually by). The intro is 'You Keep me Hanging On' by The Supremes.. Any more? (Edit: got it Mello Souls) Edited December 9, 2014 by son of stan
Md Records Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 "Little Johnny Hamilton - Oh How I Love You" borrows bits of "Marvin Gaye - I'll Be Doggone" and "Little Tony & Hawks - Give Me Your Sweet Love" borrows from "Marvin Gaye - Ain't That Peculiar" and probably the biggest copy is "Intentions - I'm Losing Your love" which borrows from "Capitols - I Got To Handle It" In my opinion Des
Chatty Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 The start of Tommy Hunt's Loving on the Losing Side not just influenced by Harold Melvin's The Love I Lost but was a complete lift, as admitted by RW many moons ago!
pikeys dog Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Al Wilson - Now I Know What Love Is intro sounds eerily like The Supremes - Back In My Arms Again
Daved Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Bunny Sigler's "Can You Dig It" also sounds a lot like "Ain't That Peculiar" to me
Guest Byrney Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) Dream Team - I'm Not Satisfied I've had down as a response to Stones Satisfaction (more Otis version now I think about it), Anna king Mamas got a bag of her own as a response to Papas got a brand new bag Edited December 10, 2014 by Byrney
Guest southpaw Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Linda Jones - My heart needs a break - Reflections - Supreams
Soulsaddler Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Marvin Gaye's I'll be Doggone (written by Smokey Robinson I believe) sounds like The Searchers' Needles and Pins.
Guest johnny hart Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Lamont Dozier, quote; "i only ever wrote one song , I just did it 66 times".....H.D.H. The Masterclass of song writing!
Pete S Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Any examples? To kick off, The Brooks Brothers 'Looking for a Woman' is very obviously heavily based on 'Satisfaction' by the Rolling Stones (I'd like to think its the other way round but I doubt it...) Bobby Womack's Nothing You Can Do actually copies the Satisfaction riff wholesale, as does 7 Dwarfs Stop Girl
El Corol Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Marvin Gaye's I'll be Doggone (written by Smokey Robinson I believe) sounds like The Searchers' Needles and Pins. Dance Little Girl by Clay Hammond also has the "Needles and Pins" riff. Howard Tate - You're Lookin'Good. The middle eight is lifted from Percy Faith - Theme from a Summer Place.
Guest Little Anthony Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 That driving beat sounds like the Rolling Stones 'Satisfaction' in parts. JJ Jackson 'Sho Nuff Got a Good thing Goin' is almost identical to The Contours 'Just a Little Misundertsanding' but the records have totally different composers on the labels.
Guest Little Anthony Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Al De Lory 'Right On' is a straight lift as on instrumental of Van Morrison's 'Domino.
Grayman45 Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Does anybody else think that the Velvet Satins - Nothing Can Compare, sounds like Tom Jones' It's Not Unusual at the beginning?
Heisenberg Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Curtis Mayfield quite blatantly ripped off "This old heart of mine" by the Isley Bros. for The Impressions' "Can't satisfy". Obviously he got sued by Motown because the 1968-compilation "The Best Of The Impressions" gives credit for "Can't satisfy" to Jobete Music...
George G Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Another for the "SatisfactIon" group - Clarence Reid - I'm Your Yes Man A bunch of songs use the similar three descending note and pause intro that was first? used on Jackie Ross's "Selfish One" - Edwin Starr "SOS", Explosive Dynamiks "Whole Lotta Loving", Purple Mundi "Stop Hurting Me", I think there are more... Pointed this one before but Gwen Owens "Wanted and Needed" intro takes after the old Stereos doowop record "I really love you". Thee Midniters "You're Gonna Make Me Cry" is a bit like JJ Jackson's "But It's Alright"
Guest son of stan Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Just thought of another one. Jan Jones 'Independent Woman', the chorus is exactly the same as Tony Clark 'The Entertainer'.
Guest son of stan Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 George McGregor 'Temptation is hard to fight' and the Knight Brothers 'Temptation about to Get Me'. But getting into soul records that are based on other soulrecords now.
Pete S Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Does anybody else think that the Velvet Satins - Nothing Can Compare, sounds like Tom Jones' It's Not Unusual at the beginning? I do 1
Md Records Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Two tracks that seem to have been shamelessly copied a fair few times "Open The Door To Your Heart" by Eugene Jefferson, Major Burkes and countless others without any acknowledgement in the song writing credits "Stand By Me" by Little "D" & Harlems, Joe Arnold and countless others without any acknowledgement in the song writing credits Des
SHEFFSOUL Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Dalton Boys..Take my hand/Beatles..From me to you
SHEFFSOUL Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Nella Dodds..your love back..1965 (intro) Stones Honky tonk woman 1969...
SHEFFSOUL Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Edward Hamilton/Arabians Tell me (intro) ..Spanish Harlem Charles Hodges -Whats gonna happen....George Michael -Faith
Chris Turnbull Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Always thought this was one of the most blatant ones - Christine Cooper 'Heartaches away my boy' quite clearly lifts the main piano / vibes riff from Supremes 'Stop in the name of love' from the previous year - surprised they got away with it 1
Chris Turnbull Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Also Dushons ' You better think it over' is a clear re-hash of Martha & Vandellas 'Nowhere to run' - in fact you could sing nowhere to run over the top of the Dushons! 1
Soulstu Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Quittin' Time, nicks a little instrumental figure directly from Get Ready - just enough not to get sued. And don't forget the Green Onions organ break on C'mon and Swim I reckon we're scratching the surface here...
Guest Garry Huxley Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 bobby freeman soulfull kindamusic reminds me of tom jones as well

Guest Garry Huxley Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 and rolling stones not fade away was a blatent steal from bo diddlyagain with no writing credits,I know this is the wrong way around and not soul but a major black artist
El Corol Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Candy and the Kisses - The 81 is pretty much a direct rehash of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - In My Lonely Room. Vandellas released March 64, Candy and the Kisses Oct 64. 1
Guest Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Candy and the Kisses - The 81 is pretty much a direct rehash of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - In My Lonely Room. Vandellas released March 64, Candy and the Kisses Oct 64. You're right -- it is -- can't believe I never noticed that one before!!! Marv Johnson -- Come On and Stop & Roy Hamilton -- She Make Me Wanna Dance are both the same song as Twist and Shout -- Isley Bros, which in turn is really the same song as La Bamba -- Ritchie Valens...
pow wow mik Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 (edited) sandy golden - your love is everything ...influenced by? young rascals - groovin Edited December 11, 2014 by pow wow mik
Cover-up Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Judy Hughes "Fine Fine Fine" influenced by The Castaways "Liar Liar"?
Davenpete Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Al De Lory 'Right On' is a straight lift as on instrumental of Van Morrison's 'Domino. Would've thought it was the other way round if anything - as Domino nicks chunks of lyrics from Little Richard's 'I don't wanna discuss it' as well.
pogo paul Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 and rolling stones not fade away was a blatent steal from bo diddly again with no writing credits, I know this is the wrong way around and not soul but a major black artist Buddy Holly cover, who used the classic Bo Diddly riff and made no secret of it.
Guest Garry Huxley Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Buddy Holly cover, who used the classic Bo Diddly riff and made no secret of it. went to the piccy's in early 80's to watch battle of the giants Bo Diddly n Chuck berry jamming on stage awesome documentary flick. went back next nite to see it again
The Yank Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Here's a few more for the list- "Baby Reconsider" by Leon Haywood borrows a lot from "Just A Little Misunderstanding" by the Contours. "One In A Million" by Maxine Brown sounds like a slowed down "Uptight" by Stevie Wonder. "Choppin' Around" by Jimmy Wisner is almost the same song as "Hungry For Love" by the San Remo Strings. The next two aren't really Northern ... "Are You Lonely For Me Baby" by Freddie Scott was obviously influenced by "Searchin' For My Love" by Bobby Moore. "Build Me Up Buttercup" by the Foundations is extremely close to "I'll Turn To Stone" by the Four Tops.
