This was the real stand out sound at my first allnighter at the tender age of 15 at Vavas.

I've looked in JMs bootleg guide and this is not mentioned as a demo, but seams to check out as an original short run out etc. I've had it for many years. Is it an original?,anyone know the rough value?

Hi Paul

Check the Deadwax on either DEMO or Stock Copy - I have scanned my copies both are Identical in the Deadwax.

Modern_45xM_1023_DJ.jpgModern_45xM_1023.jpg

The deadwax on both DEMO & Issue ONLY about 7mm - On original copies

Matrix scratched in "MM-1023-1" ( The matrix is small, about 2mm tall and situated between run off groove and playing area -

as soon as it was possible to fit it in - almost touching groove above and below it)

Run off groove in the deadwax spirals to centre quite quickly within one turn of disc - 270 degees

I hope that this helps

Sure this was only ever booted on the Out Of The Past label.

Sound quality was that terrible... used to think he was singing 'Cannabis Tree'

Actually if I remember correctly, the words were,

" there's a million pills in my hand and I wonder,?(clap, clap,)

Will I O.D.?"

:D

Mine appears ok apart from a dirtier label.

Any indication on the going rate nowadays?

Paul

Hi Paul

Pleased It's OK, don't be concerned over "dirtier label" - It's not an easy record to find.

However I couldn't say what the going rate is for it I'm afraid.

To me it's priceless - so many memories - a wonderful record - Well done

The issue is tougher in my experience. How come all the demos I've ver had/seen of this have the promo part of the text scrubbed out with marker pens? Has anyone a Demo that hasn't been defaced?

Regards,

Dave

Yes Dave, I had one that was mint and not a blemish on the label either. I think it came from Soul Bowl, £150 if my memory serves. The run out was very small and the matrix numbers were really neatly done. Don't have it now, think it may have gone to John Manship with a box full when I was selling up.....

I didn't realise that the issue was rarer, that's why I paid so much for the demo. Great record though, must be a contender for best sax middle eight ever. blush.gif

Best, Phil.

Yes the Demo was conterfeited and often had the promo text blacked out to make it look more authentic.

Info i've docmented on this title is as follows:

COUNTERFEIT of the DJ copy. Is an excellent reproduction of the original but the red is slightly the wrong shade. Deadwax matrix is lightly scratched in a two turn runout and reads MM-1023-1 The deadwax is 9.18mm wide @ the last 1 in the matrix .

AUTHENTIC ORIGINAL PRESS

Small deeply scratched MM-1023-1 martix is with the first of a THREE turn run out. Dead wax is 7.37mm. Label print definition is much shaper and is a lighter shade of red.

Watch out for Counterfeits of Darrell Banks - Angel Baby -atco demo, Sandy Wynns- Touch of Venus, Marsha Gee - Baby I Need You , Detroit Land Apples, Gary Haines, Dalton Boys, Casanova Two and and far too many others to list. All from the same pressing plant, with all having identical vinyl make-up and all the labels identical replicas of the originals. Mel Williams promo was just one of many.

Unfortunaltely mine looks like being the counterfit. It hasn't come as much of a surprise. I just wasn't sure. But It still is one of my top memories.

Thanks for the info

Paul

Hi Dave

Hi Phil

I just thought I would mention that both mine were from Soul Bowl from the 1970's.

I must say I wondered about the Black Marker Pen through the Not For Sale.

The other Modern Demo's bought at the time were clean.

It looks like the hunt is on for the unmarked copy, I hope it was looked after and not written on. It would be a shame if it has.

Hi John, Your bootleg guide is a little different to the above in that it says "run out grooves are small and tight 1 or 2 turns to the end" and "look out for the small neat run-out .. to get the original" for an original, whereas you say THREE turns for an original above.

I've just checked mine and it looks like the deadwax is about 7.5 mm but it has 2 turns max. Confused and worried now :thumbsup:

Actually I've measured again and at the last 1 of the matrix it is less than 7.5 but at the start of the run in it is about 9. Help!
