Popular Post Pete S Posted December 6, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 6, 2014 NORTHERN SOUL — THE CASINO YEARS 1973 TO 1975 (Part One) Okay this is how it really was, warts and all. In this next set of podcasts, I’m going to be tracing the history of Northern Soul via the Wigan casino years. Not Wigan again you say…well it’s the only place I went, so therefore I can recreate the playlists from experience. Obviously some records cross over to and start in other clubs, but the playlist below is what you would could have expected to hear had you been on the Northern scene between 1973 and 1975. This is the first part of two episodes looking back at some of the scene’s biggest records of the period in a not strictly but not far off chronological order. It doesn’t matter if I am a year or six months out on some tracks, please just enjoy the music. I did this live from vinyl so some records show a little wear — also, the left hand deck was playing up so one or two tracks may sound a little slow in parts, only one or two though. Hope you enjoy this, the series will be one of the best I’ve ever done. Sjclement Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 I can remember getting into the Casino on that first night to the strains of the Sherry s, my mate Kevin Horsewood , Moira and Penny were all northern soul novices at the time, we'd arrived in Wigan at 8 that night not realizing the whole thing didn't kick off until 1,so we were pretty much 1st in the queue, having only had one previous outing to The Raven in WItchurch, we thought every record played was a Wigan exclusive, seem to remember the Invitations Skiing in the Snow,Patti Austin Music to my Heart & Pain stain as well as Melba Moore Don't Cry being featured during those early days.Great to hear Gwen and Ray again (rare one that). Great podcast looking forward to the next one Thanks Pete, John

I think Pointer Sisters is already on part 2 Rob (Posted up). Dean Courtney, Salvadors also. Todays People is scheduled for part 3 (early 1976). I don't think Robin Wilson really broke out of St Giles LOL Baltimore I had down as earlier than Wigan, probably wrong, Eddie Foster I hadn't got.
Drewtg Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Keep em coming Pete. Think evelyn Thomas is a bit premature though - I think it was a bit later.
Pete S Posted December 8, 2014 Author Posted December 8, 2014 Keep em coming Pete. Think evelyn Thomas is a bit premature though - I think it was a bit later. No it wasn't Drew, have a look at the date on the label for a start...
Drewtg Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Yeah, I know what you mean but I think it was released Dec 75/Jan 76. It charted in 76. I get confused because I have the old Levine stuff on his 'Tomorrow' label, which were done at the same time.

But the Tomorrow things were pre release demos that all the DJ's etc got, they were out for ages before the records came out - Doomsday was the follow up to Weak Spot, I have that on a Wigan tape from September 75, as with LJ Johnson.

Both the one's from Evelyn Thomas, Barbara Pennington & L J Johnson plus the Excitiers stuff, hit the decks in the summer of 75.

Guest Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Cheers Dave. How's it hanging? It fell off years ago Drew!
Davetay Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 It fell off years ago Drew! The only reason you know, is because you were in the Doc's at the same time when yours fell off.
Davetay Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) Cheers Dave. How's it hanging? It fell off same time as Steve's, otherwise ok. Edited December 15, 2014 by davetay
